  • Viscosity, adhesion and cohesion of asphalt binder are very important characteristics in asphalt pavement. However, these characteristics can cause some problems such as inaccurate amount of asphalt mixture, reduction of asphalt content and loss of workability during asphalt pavement construction. Asphalt release agent has been used to solve these problems. Diesel oil and vegetable oil are generally used as an asphalt release agent in Korea. However, these agents have been criticized from environmental and binder integrity reasons. Therefore, this study evaluated the characteristics of asphalt release agents including diesel oil, vegetable oil and two emulsion type oils. From the study, it was found that the diesel oil resolved the binder within ten minutes and vegetable oil stripped the binder from mixture within one hour after contacting with asphalt mixture. And also, from the test for estimating the application cycle of asphalt release agent, it appears that diesel oil and vegetable oil should be applied to construction equipments every time in their uses. However, diesel oil and vegetable oil showed a good performance as a lubricant for detaching the asphalt mixtures from the truck bed.

  • The purpose of the study was to find an effect of phospholipid-free vegetable oils on the serum lipids and proteins of Sprague-Dawley rats. All experimental rats were fed ad libitum for 60days with the mixture of starch: casein: salt mixture: vitamin mixture (60:18:4:1) and at the same time fed administratively with 1 ml of soybean oil, corn oil and sesame oil bought in market as source of phospholipid-free vegetable oils(PFVO) and those extracted directly by and oil press as source of phospholipid-containing vegetable oils(PCVO) respectively. At the last day of experimental period, the rats were fasted for 12 hours and decaptitated to collect blood for analysis of serum lipid and protein. The results of this study were summerized as follows. 1. The supplementation of dietary phospholipid decrease food efficiency ratio and the growth rate of experimental rats. 2. The supplementation of dietary phospholipid improve correlation coefficient of body weight and organ weights. 3. The supplementation of dietary phospholipid increase the level of serum phosphatidylethanolamine. Therefore, I think that we must eat dietary phospholipid unpurified from vegetable oil to prevent development of atherosclerosis and fat liver.

  • This study was performed to determine the optimum ratio of each ingredient in the steamed foam cake with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) sproutling powder. The experiment was designed according to the D-optimal design of mixture design, which showed 14 experimental points including 4 replicates for three independent variables (sugar 112${\sim}$139%, barley sproutling powder 1${\sim}$8%, and oil 5${\sim}$25%). The compositional and functional properties of test were measured, and these values were applied to the mathematical models. A canonical form and trace plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the mixture final product. The results of F-test, volume, color values (L, a, b), textural properties (hardness, gumminess, chewiness) and sensory characteristics (softness) decided a linear model, while the sensory characteristics (color, smell, taste, overall acceptance) decided a quadratic model. The volume of steamed foam cake was increased by sugar addition, and a negative effect was exerted by barley sproutling powder and oil. L and a of color values increased but the b value decreased with increasing sugar and oil content, whereas barley sproutling powder tended to decrease all color values. The addition of barley sproutling powder also had a positive effect on the textural properties (hardness, gumminess, chewiness). Sensory characteristics (color, smell, softness, taste, overall acceptance) could suffer counter results with the excessive addition of sugar, barley sproutling powder, and oil. The optimum formulations by numerical and graphical methods were similar: sugar, barley sproutling powder, and oil were 130.4%, 4.0%, and 10.7% by numerical method, compared to 130.4%, 4.0%, and 10.7% by graphical method, respectively.

  • The low temperature pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene-polystyrene (PP-PS) mixture in a batch reactor at the atmospheric pressure and $450^{\circ}C$ was conducted to investigate the synergy effect of PP-PS mixture on the yield of pyrolytic oil. The pyrolysis time was varied from 20 to 80 mins. The products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the petroleum product quality standard of Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The analysis of the product oils by GC/MS(Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry) showed that new components were not detected by mixing of PP and PS. There was no synergy effect according to the mixing of PP and PS. Conversions and yields of PP-PS mixtures were linearly dependent on the mixing ratio of samples except for heavy oil yields. Heavy oil yields showed almost constant regardless of the mixing ratio.

  • An experiment with twenty crossbred goat kids (male) of 2-3 months old, weighing about 12 kg was conducted to study the effect of feeding formaldehyde treated rape seed oil cake based diet supplemented with molasses on growth rate and histopathological changes of different organs. Goats were randomly divided into four groups of 5 animals each and were individually fed for a period of 120 days. The animals in group I (URC) and II (URCM) were fed concentrate mixture (CM-I) containing untreated rape seed oil cake (30%) while, the animals in group III (TRC) and IV (TRCM) were offered concentrate mixture (CM-II) containing formaldehyde treated rape seed oil cake. Further, molasses as energy source was additionally supplemented with the concentrate mixture at the rate of 8% of concentrate mixture on dry matter basis to animals in group II and IV. All the animals were maintained on roughage (Berseem hay:wheat straw = 2:1) and concentrate in 50:50 ratio. Average daily gain (g/d) of animals in group IV was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in group I., but at par with group II and III. Feed conversion efficiency was also significantly (p<0.05) higher in group IV (10.14) than group I and II but at par with group III. The growth rate however increased by 50.2% in group IV showing more consistency in maintaining highest growth rate due to better balance of nutrients. At the end of four months of feeding trial, two animals from each group were sacrificed for histopathological study of different organs. Significant histopathological changes in liver, heart, lungs tissue of animals fed untreated rape seed oil cake diet were recorded which were totally absent in the organ of animals fed formaldehyde treated cake. The liver tissue of goats receiving control diet (containing untreated rape seed oil cake) were found to be associated with engorged central vein and blood vessels. Hepatocytes were swollen, pale and degenerated with cellular infiltration and fibrosis of portal areas. The muscles of heart were found to have intermyofibral edema. Emphysema accompanied by dilated and ruptured alveoli was also recorded in lung tissue. However, histopathological examination of various tissues of goats fed formaldehyde treated cake diet did not exhibit any degenerative changes. Additional supplementation of molasses with or without treated cake diet, apparently did not have any significant effect on ameliorating the above degenerative changes.

  • This research was performed to examine the protective activities of the mixtures of pine oil and copper hydroxide against bacterial spot and anthracnose on pepper plants. As for bacterial spot, the treatment of pine oil alone displayed high disease incidence (59.6%) and low protective effect (28.9%). In comparison, the treatments of mixtures and copper hydroxide alone showed protective activities of 66.8-76.1%. The mixture of pine oil and copper hydroxide (4:1) suppressed the most effectively bacterial spot on pepper. On the other hand, the mixture of pine oil and copper hydroxide (4:1) also showed the strongest protective effect against pepper anthracnose among the 4 treatments tested; its disease incidence and disease control value were 49.8% and 41.7%, respectively. The other treatments showed low protective activities with control values of 7.4-17.1%. These results suggested that the mixture of pine oil and copper hydroxide (4:1) can be used for the environmental-friendly disease control of bacterial spot and anthracnose on pepper.

  • In this study, we evaluated environmental-friendly disease control methods using essential oils, antagonistic bacteria, or cooking oil and egg yolk mixture (COY). Among the five tested plant essential oils, Eucalyptus approximans oil shown the highest effect to control of the downy mildew disease (60% disease control value). Interestingly enough, well known antagonistic bacteria against various fungal pathogens were appeared lower control efficiency than plant essential oils. In field conditions, the cooking oil and yolk mixture (COY) treatments shown significantly decreased the downy mildew incidence with 0.3% (disease conttrol value 84%) and 0.5% concentration (disease control value 91%). Our findings suggest that the COY has a great potential as the eco-friendly downy mildew disease control formulation.

  • The various microbial tests were performed to determine bioremediation agent capacity for eight strains isolated from the oil contaminated regions. Two tests for isolated strains were conducted such as cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity. The biodegradation of SHM (saturated hydrocarbon mixture) and AHM (aromatic hydrocarbon mixture) with the strains also was carried out. The strains having higher cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity degraded petroleum oil effectively. The degradation capacity for SHM was represented more than 90% in YS-7 and WLH-1 of isolated strains, and KH3-2 were capable of degrading AHM. Especially, WLH-1 as yeast was shown more than two or three times in the degradation capacity of automobile engine lubricants and the biomonitoring results of contaminated soil for residual oil degrading test showed that the hydrocarbon biodegradation was increased in the second treatment by this strain.

  • Low-temperature crystallization method silver nitrate-impregnated silicic acid column chromatography were applied for the isolation of pure $\alpha$-linolenic acid(ALA) from perilla seed oil. ALA or 78% in purity(HALA; yield, 83%) was obtained from the fatty acid mixture(ALA, 65.7%) derived from perilla oil by the low-temperature crystallization method, when the mixture was frozen at -8$0^{\circ}C$ for 210min. ALA over 90% in purity(yield, 71%) was also obtained from HALA ethyl esters(ALA, 78%) by the silver nitrate-impregnated silicic acid column(100cm$\times$10cm, i.d.) chromatography. In addition, the silver nitrate-impregnated silicic acid could be semipermanently used for isolation of ALA, because $Ag^{+}$ ion was not dissociated from the stationary phase.
