  • For the study of chemical and mechanical properties of the synthetic and mineral oil added with two different Zn-DTPs, base and formulated oils were analyzed and compared. Kinematic viscosity and total acid number (TAN) were tested at high temperature for formulated oils. Also the oils added with different alkyl groups of Zn-DTP were tested for thermal stability and TAN changes. The 4-ball machine was used to test for the mechanical properties, such as the coefficient of friction and wear. The worn areas after sliding test were analyzed with microscope and EDX, too. From the study, mineral and synthetic oil have different effects according to the various added ratio of the primary and secondary alkyl groups of Zn-DTP. Also the temperature of test oil affected the anti-wear and friction property of the formulated oils. For synthetic oil, the primery alkyl group of Zn-DTP made better friction properties than that of secondary, while, for mineral oil, secondary alkyt group was better only at low temperature for mineral oil.

  • With the intention of investigating the breakdown properties of oil-immersed transformer oils in temperature range of 20∼100[$^{\circ}C$], we are made researches AC breakdown in the gap of 500∼2,500[$\mu\textrm{m}$]. The classification for the physical properties of oil for oil-immersed transformer by FTH and $^1$H-NMR experiments was confirmed to type of mineral oils. As the dependance of breakdown properties due to electrode gap length variation, breakdown voltage was found increasing according to the increase of gap, while dielectric strength was decreasing. As a result the characteristics for AC breakdown, It goes to prove that the breakdown voltage was increased to 90[$^{\circ}C$] but decreased over 90[$^{\circ}C$] in the temperature range. Also, breakdown voltage was found increasing in the increase of gap and the rising of temperature according to Weibull distribution.

  • The lubrication characteristics of high-speed ball bearings at oil-starvation have been investigated empirically using the bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines. For the close structural simulation, experiments carried our with bearing mounting supports of real engines, such as bearing housings and oil nozzle assemblies with squeeze film dampers. Thus the results of tests can be applied to the design and the development of gas turbine engines. Testing was done by simulating the oil-starvation conditions in engines, such as stopping the oil-supply to the bearing during normal operating, starting without oil-supply at atmospheric temperature, and accelerating with oil-supply at atmospheric temperature. From this study, the relative comparison of the frictional resistance and the resistance due to the bearing cavity oil was demonstrated visually, and the resistance due to the bearing cavity oil was dominant in the resistance of bearing at high speed.

  • Oil shale is the sedimentary rock containing kerogen, which is one of the abundant unconventional fuel. In the pyrolysis process, oil, gas and coke are produced from the decomposition of oil shale. In this study, TGA and the continuous pyrolysis of oil shale have been investigated for the clean conversion of oil shale. Effects of reaction temperature and residence time on the pyrolysis conversion and oil production rate have been determined. Conversion of oil shale increases with increasing the reaction temperature and residence time. Optimum conditions for oil production were reaction temperature of $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ at the residence time of 30 min.

  • The quantity of discharged oil from a compressor is one of the most important issues for proper operation of refrigeration system. If the oil is increased in the system not only pressure drop is increased in other components, such as evaporator and gas cooler but also heat transfer coefficient in the heat exchangers is decreased. In addition, the lack of oil in the compressor may cause a critical of the system failure. In this study, one stage single rotary compressor is used for measuring oil circulation ratio(OCR). Carbon dioxide and PAG oil are used as refrigerant and lubricant. Using a U-tube densimeter, mixture density is measured. Characteristics of oil circulation ratio have been investigated for $CO_2$ rotary compressor in the range of operation frequency 45 Hz to 63 Hz and the suction temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The results obtained indicate that the oil circulation ratio is increased as the suction temperature or compressor operating frequency is increased.

  • An experimental device was developed for analysis of hydraulic oil characteristics with dielectric constant sensors. Online analysis is the most effective method of the three methods used for analyzing lubricant oils. This is because it can monitor the machine condition effectively using oil sensors in real time without requiring excellent analysis skill and eliminates human errors. Determining the oil quality usually requires complex laboratory equipment for measuring factors such as density, viscosity, base number, acid number, water content, additive, and wear debris. However, the electric constant is another indicator of oil quality that can be measured on-site. The electric constant is the ratio of the capacitance of a capacitor using that material as a dielectric, compared with a similar capacitor that has a vacuum as its dielectric. The electric constant affects the factors such as the base oil, additive, temperature, electric field frequency, water content, and contaminants. In this study, the tendency of the electric constant is investigated with a variation of temperature, water content, and dust weight. The experimental device can control working temperature and mix the contaminants with oil. A machine condition monitoring program developed to analyze hydraulic oil is described. This program provides graph and digital values with variation of time. Moreover, it includes an alarm system for when the oil condition is bad.

  • Recently, the needs of system performances such as working speed and processing accuracy in machine tools have been increased. Especially, the working speed increment generates harmful heat at both moving part of the machine tools and handicrafts. The heat is a main drawback to progress accuracy of the processing. Hence, a oil cooler to control temperature is inevitable for the machine tools. In general, two representative control schemes, hot-gas bypass and variable speed control of a compressor, have been adopted in the oil cooler system. In this paper, the compressor's speed are controlled to keep reference value of temperature at oil outlet. The precision processing of a machine tool is required for an oil cooler guaranteeing ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ temperature control. But the oil cooler with precision temperature control is expensive. Therefore in this paper, instead of a on/off(relay) control method, a PID and phase angle electric power control method is proposed for the precision control of an oil cooler. The proposed controller is implemented and tested at the temperature of $23^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Performance of a screw press was investigated experimentally with soybeans of various temperatures in order to find out a proper temperature of soybean to extract the oil by the mechanical method. Crude oil extracted by the screw press was chemically analyzed to determine a level of processing the oil for the oil to be used as a fuel for a compression ignition engine. The crude oil was degummed and dried by a plant type laboratory experimental setup to decide whether the processes are effective to improve quality of the oil as a fuel. The degummed oil and the degummed and dried oil were also chemically analyzed and were compared with the crude oil and the commercially degummed and dried soybean oil. The results are as follows: 1. In extraction of soybean oil by a screw press, heating soybeans is effective to increase oil production and to decrease energy consumption of the press. A proper temperature of soybean to extract the oil by the press was determined as about $50^{\circ}C$. 2. Soybean oil production and electric energy consumption of the press are about 83 ml and 58 Wh per 1 kg of soybeans heated to about $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. 3. The quality of crude oil produced by the press is similar to that of the commercially degummed and dried oil. The crude oil does not need to be degummed or dried for use as an engine fuel.
