Radon concentrations were measured in 250 groundwater samples collected from the Goesan area where uraniferous black slate and granites abundantly occur in the formations. The measured radon levels ranged from 0.90 to 7,218.7 Bq/L with the median value of 54.3 Bq/L, similar to the value measured in the nationwide survey in 4,853 wells (52.1 Bq/L). The median value was highest in the Cretaceous granite area (390.0 Bq/L) while it was as low as 20.0~58.8 Bq/L in the Ogcheon meta-sedimentary rock areas. About 23.6% of the total samples exceeded the WHO guideline value of 100 Bq/L established in 2011. The exceeding rate was 69.0, 39.4, and 7.0~13.7% in the Cretaceous granite area, Jurassic granite area, and Ogcheon meta-sedimentary rock areas, respectively.
Southwestern contact zone of the Boeun granodiorite occurs near the thrust fault between the Ogcheon Group and Majeonri Limestone Formation. Ogcheon Group, metasediments composed of the Munjuri Formation, Changri Formation, and unconformably overlying Hwanggangri Formation, belongs to greenschist facies of regional metamorphism accompanied with deformation of two fold axes, $N10^{\circ}E$ and $N45-65^{\circ}E$ directions. Basic metamorphic rocks occurring in the Changri and Limestone Formations are the meta-basalts and meta-diabases of tholeiitic basalt series. The meta-basalts intruded in the Changri Formation as sills, whereas the meta-diabases in the Changri and Limestone Formations as stocks in appearance. They are considered to have emplaced before the formation of two fold axes and related with the thrust fault, based on the geologic setting of the area. The metamorphic facies are identified to be greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-basalt, and epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-diabases. It is interpreted that such a variety of facies was related from the combination of earlier deuteric alteration and later regional metamorphism. The metasediments in southwestern contact zont of the Boeun granodiorite which is a product of later syntectonic intrusion of middle Jurassic in age, show pyroxene-hornfels facies near the contact and amphibole-horenfels facies away from the contact to the mineral zoning in the contact metamorphic aureole of the Limestone Formation, based on the paragenetic analysis of mineral assemblages. The Limestone in the area appears to be considerably $SiO_2-CaO-MgO-CO_2-H_2O$ can be adopted to evaluate equilibrium conditions of the mineral assemblages in each mineral zone. It is revealed that a temperature gradient was existed accross the contact aureole ranging from the higher igneous side to lower sedimentary side, whereas no clear trend of $XCO_2$ variation appears but high mole fraction. The tremolite diopside-quartz-calcite assemblages occurs in common through the most mineral zones of contact aureole that is in good agreement with the equivalent reaction curve which extends over a wide range of $T-XCO_2$ conditions.
Combined mineralogical and geochemical studies were made on two hundred eighty one representative samples from uraniferous coaly meta-pelites of the Ogcheon metamorphic terrain. Different mineral occurrence of the areas investigated should be taken into account for chemical processes for uranium extraction. Secondary uranium minerals identified are metauranocircite, metatorbernite and autunite. These are disseminated mostly on the laumontites which infused and filled secondary openings in the coaly matrix, and are often closely associated with iron oxides. The uranium distribution show distinctly log normal. Geochemical correlation coefficient of uranium and organic carbon displays +0.624~+0.796. The relationship of the major components to uranium can be expressed by the following regression equation: Log $(U_3O_8{\times}10^4)$=1.40117-0.00076 (quartz) -0.00118 (muscovite) +0.00235 (biotite) +0.00323 (other silicates) - 0.01114 (apatite) +0.01124 (hematite) +0.00149 (limonite) -0.01823 (opaques)+0.03049 (organic carbon). Uranium in the coaly meta-pelites of the Ogcheon Group was deposited together under same physico-chemical environmental conditions. There is a considerable variation in the ${\delta}^{34}S$ values (11.2~16.8 per mil) of the pyrites from the U-bearing meta-pelites, which implies sedimentary origin. The two U-bearing coaly rocks analyzed have ${\delta}^{13}C$ values between -16.88~-18.00 per mil, which suggests organic.
Gamma-radiation dose rates were measured at 77 points around the Ogcheon lower phyllite zone (og2) in Goesan County, Korea, using gamma-ray spectrometry. Sample K contents were in the range 1.8-8.8% (average 4.6%), highest in Kgr. The eU contents were 0.2-217.9 ppm (average 16.7 ppm), highest in og2 (median 29.6 ppm). The eTh contents were 11.9-76.5 ppm (average 29.5 ppm) and the average eTh content of Kgr was 45.4 ppm, higher than those of Ogcheon meta-sedimentary rocks (og1, og2, and og3) (26.6-30.6 ppm). Except for some high-uranium sites in og2, 40K is the main radioactive material contributing to the gamma-radiation dose in the study area. Our results indicate that the outdoor effective dose rate of the area is 0.08-1.71 mSv y-1 (average 0.28 mSv y-1), with most areas apart from three points in og2 displaying dose rates <1 mSv y-1, which is the normal natural radiation background level.

Geochemical and isotopic analyses were carried out to investigate hydrochemical characteristics, source of carbon species in the carbonated waters in South Korea. Most Korean carbonated waters from different geologic settings are characterized by a Ca-HCO$_3$type with a relatively low pH range from 5.3 to 6.3 (avg. 6.0). The concentrations of cations and anions in the carbonate waters are in the order of Ca$^{2+}$>Na$^{+}$>Mg$^{2+}$>Si$^{4+}$>Fe$^{2+}$>K$^{+}$ and HCO$_3$$^{-}$>SO$_4$$^{2-}$>Cl$^{-}$, respectively. The HCO$_3$$^{-}$ ion is more enriched in the carbonated water from the sedimentary rock and granitic rock of Mesozoic age in the Gyungsang basin(GII) and the Precambrian metamorphic rock and Jurassic granitic rocks of the Gyunggj massif in the Gangwon province(GⅠ) than those of the meta-sedimentary rock and granite in the Ogcheon zone(GⅢ). Based on the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic data, the carbonated waters are derived from the meteoric water, showing apparent latitude and altitude effects. The $delta$$^{13}$C values of carbon species in the carbonated water are in between -6.23 and 0.0 $textperthousand$, suggesting inorganic source of carbon originated from the carbonate mineral and carbonate rock in the aquifer.
We carried out the sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U-Pb age dating and whole-rock geochemical analysis of granitoids and felsic porphyries in the Ssangyong Valley, Yongchu Valley, and Mungyeong Saejae geosites in the Mungyeong Geopark. The igneous rocks crop out in the western, northwestern and central parts of the Mungyeong city area, respectively, and intruded (meta)sedimentary successions of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt, Cambro-Ordovician Mungyeong Group and Jurrasic Daedong Group. The U-Pb isotopic compositions of zircon from two felsic porphyries and one granite samples in the Ssanyeong Valley yielded the Cretaceous intrusion ages of 93.9±3.3 Ma (tσ), 95.1±4.0 Ma (tσ) and 94.4±2.0 Ma (tσ), respectively. On the other hand, a felsic dike sample and a granite in the Yongchu Valley and a porphyritic granite in the Mungyeong Saejae had intrusion ages of 90.2±2.0 Ma (tσ), 91.0±3.0 Ma (tσ) and 88.6±1.5 Ma (tσ), respectively. Based on the average standard error calculated in combination with results of previous studies in this area (Lee et al., 2010; Yi et al., 2014; Aum et al., 2019), the geochronological results show that spatial variation in intrusion age of ~5 Myr between the Ssangyong (94.5±0.2 Ma) and Yongchu Valleys (89.7±0.4 Ma) is apparent. The geochemical compositions of major and trace elements in the samples showed an affinity of typical post-orogenic granite, indicating their petrogenesis during the late stage of Early Cretaceous magmatic activity possibly in association with subduction events of the Izanagi Plate.
