With the abnormal weather phenomena caused by global warming, the frequency and intensity of lightning strikes are increasing, and lightning accidents are becoming one of the biggest causes of failures and accidents in offshore wind turbines. In order to secure generator operation reliability, effective and practical measures are needed to reduce lightning damage. Because offshore wind turbines are tall structures installed at sea, the possibility of direct lightning strikes is very high compared to other structures, and the role of surge protection devices to minimize damage to the electrical and electronic circuits inside the wind turbine is very important. In this study, a varistor, which is a key element for a class 1 surge protection device for direct lightning protection, was developed. The current density was improved by changing the varistor composition, and the distance between the electrode located on the varistor surface and the edge of the varistor was optimized through a simulation program to improve the fabrication process. Considering the combined effects of heat distribution, electric field distribution, and current density on the optimized varistor surface, silver electrodes were formed with a gap of 0.5 mm. The varistor developed in this study was confirmed to have an energy tolerance of 10/350 ㎲, 50kA, which is a representative direct lightning current waveform, and good protection characteristics with a limiting voltage of 2 kV or less.
The composite blades of offshore wind turbines accumulate structural damage such as fatigue cracking due to harsh operation environments during their service time, leading to premature structural failures. This paper investigates various fatigue crack models for reproducing crack development in composite blades and proposes a stochastic approach to predict fatigue crack evolution and to analyse failure probability for the composite blades. Three typical fatigue models for the propagation of fatigue cracks, i.e., Miner model, Paris model and Reifsnider model, are discussed to reproduce the fatigue crack evolution in composite blades subjected to cyclical loadings. The lifetime probability of fatigue failure of the composite blades is estimated by stochastic deterioration modelling such as gamma process. Based on time-dependent reliability analysis and lifecycle cost analysis, an optimised maintenance policy is determined to make the optimal decision for the composite blades during the service time. A numerical example is employed to investigate the effectiveness of predicting fatigue crack growth, estimating the probability of fatigue failure and evaluating an optimal maintenance policy. The results from the numerical study show that the stochastic gamma process together with the proper fatigue models can provide a useful tool for remaining useful life predictions and optimum maintenance strategies of the composite blades of offshore wind turbines.
The latest offshore wind turbines are easily exposed to lightning strikes because they are designed with longer blades and taller height to satisfy the growing capacity demands. The generation facilities and elements of the offshore wind farm are more vulnerable to lightning damage because of more severe, unpredictable weather conditions. Therefore, this paper presents the analysis of measure for lightning overvoltage mitigation in offshore wind farm planned in South Korea southwest seashore. The sensitivity analysis includes the steady state and transient state characteristics of offshore wind farm and proposes the countermeasure for mitigation of transient overvoltage by considering earth resistivity of the offshore environment.
Offshore wind energy is gaining more and more attention during this decade. For the countries with coast sites, the water depth is significantly large. This causes attention to the floating wind turbine. Offshore wind turbines are designed and analyzed using comprehensive simulation codes that account for the coupled dynamics of the wind inflow, aerodynamics, elasticity and controls of the wind turbine, along with the incident waves, sea current, hydrodynamics, and foundation dynamics of the support structures. In this work, a three-bladed 5MW upwind wind turbine installed on a floating spar buoy in 320m of water is studied by using of fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tool. Specifications of the structures are chosen from the OC3 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration) under "IEA Wind Annex XXIII-subtask2". The primary external conditions due to wind and waves are simulated. Certain design load case is investigated.
With growing of wind turbine industry, offshore wind energy is getting more attention in recent years. Among all the components of offshore wind turbines, the foundation of the offshore wind turbine plays a key role in stability of whole system. In this work, the 5 MW NREL reference wind turbine with rated speed of 11.4 m/s is used for load calculation. Wind and wave loads are calculated using GH-Bladed (Garard Hassan) and FAST (NREL). Additionally, FE simulation is carried out to investigate the wave effect on the support structure. Meanwhile, this work is to simulate systemic and optimized load cases for the foundation analysis of wind turbine system.
The cross-section area of cable in the Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is smaller than that in the onshore wind farm. Because the power loss in OWF is large relatively, the power loss is a key element for the economic evaluation of OWF design. The availability of wind turbine in OWF and the size of OWF are larger than those of onshore wind farm. If the economic evaluation of OWF ignores the availability of wind turbines, the power loss cost of OWF is overpriced. Since there are so many wind turbines, also, the calculation of power loss should be more accurate. In this paper, a method to calculate power loss is proposed for the design of big and complex inner-grid in OWF. The 99.5MW OWF is used for case study to see what effect the proposed method have on the power loss cost.
The wind power generation is an eco-friendly clean energy that produces almost zero $CO_2$ emission, and has a good economic feasibility. As for the location, the installation of large turbines and construction of large-scale wind farm is easier on the offshore than on the land. In Korea, it is inevitable to generate offshore wind power through the offshore wind farm, and the radio interference of larger wind power generators and offshore wind power farm to broadcasting, communication and radars is becoming a core issue for constructing the offshore wind farm. In this study, the wind power generation status and rotor blade technology trend were presented, along with the technical trend of radar radio interference reduction relating to construction of the offshore wind farm.
According to "The Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan", offshore wind power accounts for 12 GW of the total new capacity of 48.7 GW. Like the south-west 2.5 GW offshore wind farm case, government-led development has had difficulty in securing the residents' acceptability. This study contributes to the study of local acceptance by analyzing the perceptions of Maldo residents. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with the head of a village and fishing village chief, and the entire contents of the interview were revised and analyzed. The cognitive structure of the stakeholders could be confirmed using semantic network analysis, which analyzes the network structure among words. Based on the analysis results, focusing on the identity frames related to the compensation process from previous national projects, gain vs. loss frames act as the dominant frame in terms of profits from offshore wind turbines. To invigorate offshore wind farms, the policy implications as follows. First, a negotiation organization should be organized to deal with strategic opposition by fishes. Second, installing offshore wind farms on a public water body will result in demands for compensation from various actors, and a licensed fishing territory as an offshore wind farm installation site should be considered.
Due to less turbulence and no land limitation, offshore wind energy gets more attention than onshore. Jacket structure is regarded as a suitable solution for the water depth ranging from 30 to 80 meters. In general, joint stress concentration of jacket support structures affects their fatigue life. Nowadays, most jacket structures for offshore wind turbines have tubular X-joint between legs. In this paper, a study on X-joint stress concentration of offshore wind turbine jacket structure is performed by using 50m water depth model. Stress of X-joint on offshore environmental conditions are discussed.
Recently, the destructive power of typhoons is continuously increasing due to the influence of global warming. In a situation where the installation of floating wind turbines is increasing around the world, concerns about the huge loss and collapse of floating offshore wind turbines due to strong typhoons are deepening. Regarding to the safe operation of the floating offshore wind turbine, the development of a new type of disconnectable mooring system is required. A new fairlead chain stopper considered in this study is devised to more easily attach or detach the floating offshore wind turbine with mooring lines comparing to other disconnectable mooring apparatuses. In order to investigate the structural safety of the initial design of fairlead chain stopper that can be applied to MW-class floating type offshore wind turbine, scale-down structural models were produced using a 3-D printer and structural tests were performed on the models. For the structural tests of the scale-down models, tensile specimens of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene material that was used in the 3-D printing were prepared, and the material properties were evaluated by performing the tensile tests. The finite element analysis of fairlead chain stopper was performed by applying the material properties obtained from the tensile tests and the same load and boundary conditions as in the scale-down model structural tests. Through the finite element analysis, the structural weak parts on the fairlead chain stopper were reviewed. The structural model tests were performed considering the main load conditions of fairlead chain stopper, and the test results were compared to the finite element analysis. Through the results of this study, it was possible to experimentally verify the structural safety of the initial design of fairlead chain stopper. It is also judged that the study results can be usefully used to improve the structural strength of fairlead chain stopper in a detailed design stage.
