Jacket-type offshore structures are always exposed to severe environmental conditions such as salt, high speed of current, wave, and wind compared with other onshore structures. In spite of the importance of maintaining the structural integrity for an offshore structure, there are few cases to apply a structural health monitoring (SHM) system in practice. The impedance-based SHM is a kind of local SHM techniques and to date, numerous techniques and algorithms have been proposed for local SHM of real-scale structures. However, it still requires a significant challenge for practical applications to compensate unknown environmental effects and to extract only damage features from impedance signals. In this study, the impedance-based SHM was carried out on a 1/20-scaled model of an Uldolmok current power plant structure in Korea under changes in temperature and transverse loadings. Principal component analysis (PCA)-based approach was applied with a conventional damage index to eliminate environmental changes by removing principal components sensitive to them. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is an effective tool for long-term SHM under significant environmental changes.
Modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) presents attractive technical advantages and contributes to enhanced system operation and reduced oscillation damping in dynamic MMC-HVDC systems. We propose an advanced small-signal multi-terminal MMC-HVDC based on dynamic phasors and state space for power system stability analysis to enhance computational accuracy and reduce simulation time. In accordance with active and passive network control strategies for multi-terminal MMC-HVDC, the matchable small-signal stability models containing high harmonics and dynamics of internal variables are conducted, and a related theoretical derivation is carried out. The proposed advanced small-signal model is then compared with electromagnetic-transient and traditional small-signal state-space models by adopting a typical multi-terminal MMC-HVDC network with offshore wind generation. Simulation indicates that the advanced small-signal model can successfully follow the electromechanical transient response with small errors and can predict the damped oscillations. The validity and applicability of the proposed model are effectively confirmed.
Targeting a floating wave and offshore wind hybrid power generation system (FWWHybrid) designed in the Republic of Korea, this study examines the impact of the interaction, with multiple wave energy converters (WECs) placed on the platform, on platform motion. To investigate how the motion of WECs affects the behavior of the FWWHybrid platform, it was numerically compared with a scenario involving a 'single-body' system, where multiple WECs are constrained to the platform. In the case of FWWHybrid, because the platform and multiple WECs move in response to waves simultaneously as a 'multi-body' system, hydrodynamic interactions between these entities come into play. Additionally, the power take-off (PTO) mechanism between the platform and individual WECs is introduced for power production. First, the hydrostatic/dynamic coefficients required for numerical analysis were calculated in the frequency domain and then used in the time domain analysis. These simulations are performed using the extended HARP/CHARM3D code developed from previous studies. By conducting regular wave simulations, the response amplitude operator (RAO) for the platform of both single-body and multi-body scenarios was derived and subsequently compared. Next, to ascertain the difference in response in the real sea environment, this study also includes an analysis of irregular waves. As the floating body maintains its position through connection to a catenary mooring line, the impact of the slowly varying wave drift load cannot be disregarded. To assess the influence of the 2nd-order wave exciting load, irregular wave simulations were conducted, dividing them into cases where it was not considered and cases where it was included. The analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom behavior confirmed that the action of multiple WECs had a substantial impact on the platform's response.
The image information acquired by a model submarine is transmitted through the repeater. The control signal of a position for submarine and its speed is also controlled by the repeater. Shooting images of underwater circumstances are transmitted to the repeater where the received signal controls a position and speed of underwater submarine. This repeater is combined by a buoy that is floating on the surface to relay the signal of image as well as control between a control unit and a submarine whereas the repeater communicates wirelessly with a control unit. Due to wire communication between the repeater and the submarine, the underwater exploration can be smoothly carried out without a risk of loss of a model submarine. Also, connecting to the repeater and control unit wirelessly makes it possible to conduct easily the underwater exploration. The convergence technology that combines a wireless communication and a control as well as a model submarine is designed.

As a national enterprise has been expanded over and over, the worldwide energy consumption has been growing necessarily. Moreover, as recently energy spendings are on the increase in countries such as BRICs, it has resulted that a rise in the price of both oil and mineral resources and instability between supply and demand become serious issue in the world resources market. The recent high price of oil and mineral resources have a deep influence on economy and threaten energy security and even national prosperity of Korea. In addition to these, exhaustion of fossil fuels and the enhanced greenhouse effect which results from gases emitted as a result of fossil fuels has been in serious questions which occur a great deal of effort to secure clean energy resources all around the world. As it is considerably possible for Korea that the Kyoto protocol may come into effect on and after 2013, it is essential to require the technological development to promote energy efficiency as well as to develope safe and renewable energy resources. The wind energy technology which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy has been in the focus of the world's attention. In this study, two-dimensional numerical analyses were conducted to observe subsidence aspects of the sea bottom on differently applied loads and various ground conditions.

The increasing demand for high voltage DC grids resulting from the continuous installation of offshore wind farms in the North Sea has led to the concept of multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) grids, which face some challenges. Power (current) flow control is a challenge that must be addressed to realize a reliable operation of MTDC grids. This paper presents a reduced switch count topology of a current flow controller (CFC) for power flow and current limiting applications in MTDC grids. A simple control system based on hysteresis band current control is proposed for the CFC. The theory of operation and control of the CFC are demonstrated. The key features of the proposed controller, including cable current balancing, cable current limiting, and current nulling, are illustrated. An MTDC grid is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software to evaluate the steady state and dynamic performance of the proposed CFC topology. Furthermore, a low power prototype is built for a CFC to experimentally validate its performance using rapid control prototyping. Simulation and experimental studies indicate the fast dynamic response and precise results of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the proposed controller offers a real solution for power flow challenges in MTDC grids.

In the production power transmitting of a floating production system like a wind offshore floating, the power cable should be connected from the surface system into the subsea system. The connection between the surface and the subsea system will make the power cable get a dynamic load like current and wave forces. Based on this condition, a dynamic power cable is required to endure external physical force and vibration in the long-term condition. It needs more requirements than static power cable for mechanical fatigue properties to prevent failures during operations in marine environments where the external and internal loads work continuously. As a process to verify, the durability test of dynamic power cables under the marine operation environment condition was carried out by using domestic technology development.

Recently, the destructive power of typhoons is continuously increasing owing to global warming. In a situation where the installation of floating wind turbines is increasing worldwide, concerns about the huge loss and collapse of floating offshore wind turbines owing to strong typhoons are deepening. A new type of disconnectable mooring system must be developed for the safe operation of floating offshore wind turbines. A new submersible mooring pulley considered in this study is devised to more easily attach or detach the floating of shore wind turbine with mooring lines compared with other disconnectable mooring apparatuses. To investigate the structural safety of the initial design of submersible mooring pulley that can be applied to an 8MW-class floating type offshore wind turbine, scale-down structural models were developed using a 3-D printer and structural tests were performed on the models. For the structural tests of the scale-down models, tensile specimens of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene material that was used in the 3-D printing were prepared, and the material properties were evaluated by conducting the tensile tests. The finite element analysis (FEA) of submersible mooring pulley was performed by applying the material properties obtained from the tensile tests and the same load and boundary conditions as in the scale-down model structural tests. Through the FEA, the structural weak parts on the submersible mooring pulley were reviewed. The structural model tests were conducted considering the main load conditions of submersible mooring pulley, and the FEA and test results were compared for the locations that exceeded the maximum tensile stress of the material. The results of the FEA and structural model tests indicated that the connection structure of the body and the wheel was weak in operating conditions and that of the body and the chain stopper was weak in mooring conditions. The results of this study enabled to experimentally verify the structural safety of the initial design of submersible mooring pulley. The study results can be usefully used to improve the structural strength of submersible mooring pulley in a detailed design stage.

Most civil engineering structures, such as highway bridges, towers, power plants and offshore structures suffer structural damages over their service lives caused by adverse loading such as heavy transportation loads, machine vibrations, earthquakes, wind and wave forces. Especially, if excessive load would be acted on the structure, general or partial stiffness should be degraded suddenly and service lives should be shortened eventually For realistic damage assessment of these civil structures, System Identification method using only structure dynamic response data with unknown input excitation is required and thus becoming more challenging problem. In this paper, an improved Iterative Least Squares method is proposed, which seems to be very efficient and robust method, because only the dynamic response data such as acceleration, velocity and displacement is used without input data, and no information on the modal properties is required. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed method is proved by numerical problems and real single span beam model test.
