  • In this study, various conditions and phenomena that occur in the process of removing odorous VOCs by using electrolyzed oxidant were examined. The formation of hypochlorous acid, which is an oxidant produced by electrolysis, was investigated and the properties of the oxidizing agent used to decompose toluene, xylene, and cyclohexane were investigated. As a result, it was found that the production rate and the final concentration of the oxidizing agent increased with the current density. It was found that the degree of removal varies depending on the property of each pollutant. Interestingly, in the batch experiments in which the pH of the produced oxidant was controlled, it was found that the degree of elimination varied depending on the pH of the substance. These results suggest that the difference in the concentration and distribution of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ($OCl^-$) due to the pH change leads to the difference in oxidizing power on the oxidation characteristics of each substance. Styrene and terpineol showed better degradation characteristics than toluene and xylene in odorous VOC removal experiments by spraying electrolytic oxidant using a lab-scale continuous reactor. In conclusion, the removal of odorous VOCs by the electrolytic oxidant can have various applications in that it can oxidize pollutants of various spectra.

  • Objectives: A variety of industries handling hazardous chemicals emit odorous substances. Based on the emission characteristics of major odor substances from the results of hazardous chemical substance emissions, we will define basic data for improving the management methods of odorous substances. Methods: A survey of hazardous pollutant emissions for 2010-2016 was conducted through the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register homepage. Eight kinds of designated odor substances (ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, acetaldehyde, styrene, toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone) provided the study subjects. The status of chemical accidents for the target substances was analyzed using the Chemistry Safety Clearing-house system. Results: From 2010 to 2016, it was found that more than 30% of businesses that emitted odorous substances accounted for more than 50% of the total emissions of the eight substances. Emissions of xylene, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, and ammonia were found, in that order, and they made up more than 90% of the total emitted. By region, about 70% of odorous substances were emitted in the top-four regions: Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Ulsan, Gyeonggi-do Province, and Jeollanam-do Province. Conclusion: Recently, the amount of chemical emissions has been continuously increasing, including those that can cause odor. Odorous substances can be a serious risk to the lives of local residents. Systematic research is needed for the health protection of residents.

  • This study used a single metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor to classify the major odorous gases hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), ammonia ($NH_3$) and toluene ($C_6H_5CH_3$). In order to classify these odorous substances, the voltage on the MOS sensor heater was gradually reduced in 0.5 V steps 5.0 V to examine the changes to the response by the cooling effect on the sensor as the voltage decreased. The hydrogen sulfide gas showed the highest sensitivity compared to odorless air under approximately 2.5 V and the ammonia and toluene gases showed the highest sensitivity under approximately 5.0 V. In other words, the hydrogen sulfide gas reacted better in the low temperature range of the MOS sensor, and the ammonia and toluene gases reacted better in the high-temperature range. In order to analyze the response characteristics of the MOS sensor by temperature in a pattern, a two-dimensional (2D) x-y pattern analysis was introduced to clearly classify the hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and toluene gases. The hydrogen sulfide gas was identified by a straight line with a slope of 1.73, whereas the ammonia gas had a slope of 0.05 and the toluene gas had a slope of 0.52. Therefore, the 2D x-y pattern analysis is suggested as a new way to classify these odorous substances.

  • This study aims to analysis correlation in septic tank and sewer pipe between odor substances and complex odor. For the analysis, convert odor substances to odor intensity, and estimate the effect of odor substances on complex odor. As a result, both Hydrogen sulfide and Methyl mercaptane of specified offensive odor substances accounted for 29 percent of the effect of odor substances on complex odor. Hydrogen sulfide and Methyl mercaptane are major cause of odor from septic tank and sewer pipe. The result of this study is suggested to be used as a preliminary data for research on analysis complex odor and odor substances.

  • 5 public complaint areas against odor in Changwon Industrial Complex were selected and investigated to clear up the cause of the complaint. 16 companies operated in public complaint areas were visited and had a grip of their situation about odor generation and treatment. Two samples at it's site boundary of each company were taken to measure complex odor unit. Complex odor unit at the site boundary of investigated companies in the public complaint areas, for the most part, exceeded standard(odor unit 20) in industrial area. It was due to that this area was not designated as odor control region and that there are also many problems in current laws of Odor Protection Act, Air Quality Act and regional legislation. Accordingly, It will be necessary to revise the related legislation, to organize governance, to financially support the improvement of environmental facilities and to enforce guidance and the regulation rigidly for the odor emission reduction in Changwon Industrial Complex.

  • The aim was to investigate the effect of reducing the odorous and complex odor released during the decomposition of food wastes using effective microorganism (EM) as a function of time at $20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. The variation of total microbial counts and dominant species counts in EM and leachate produced during food wastes decomposition was also observed. In general, the cumulative concentration of sulfur compounds ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$) and complex odor released during food wastes decomposition increased with increasing elapsed time. The nitrogen compounds ($NH_3$, trimethyl amine), however, was not observed in all samples. The addition of EM in food wastes resulted in the reduction of concentration of sulfur compounds and complex odor, in spite of the increase of $CH_3CHO$ concentration. The dominant microbial species detected in EM were Lactobacillus species(Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus casei). In the leachate produced during food wastes decomposition, however, the various microbial community alternative to that detected in EM was observed. The EM could be potentially useful as a tools for reducing odor induced from the food waste decomposition process.

  • With the recent development of industrial technology, the problem of odor due to leakage of toxic gas discharged from industrial complexes is gradually increasing. Among them, hydrogen sulfide is a colorless representative odorous substance that can cause pain through irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, and is a gas that can cause central nervous system paralysis and suffocation when exposed to high concentrations. Therefore, in order to improve the odor problem, research on a gas sensor capable of quickly and reliably detecting a leak of hydrogen sulfide is being actively conducted. A lot of research has been done on the existing metal oxide-based hydrogen sulfide gas sensor, but it has the disadvantage of requiring low selectivity and high temperature operating conditions. Therefore, in this study, a Pt/CNT-based electrochemical hydrogen sulfide gas sensor capable of detecting at low temperatures with high selectivity for hydrogen sulfide was developed. A working electrode capable of selectively detecting only hydrogen sulfide was fabricated by synthesizing Pt nanoparticles as a catalyst on functionalized CNT and applied to an electrochemical hydrogen sulfide gas sensor. It was confirmed that the manufactured Pt/CNT-based electrochemical hydrogen sulfide gas sensor has a current change of up to 100uA for hydrogen sulfide, and the both response time and recovery time were within 15 seconds.
