Effect of aerobically treated manure on odorous material emissions from a swine finishing barn equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine reduction of various odorous materials from a swine farm equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) with aerobically treated liquid manure. Methods: The CPRS is used in swine farms in South Korea, primarily to improve air quality in pig houses. In this study, CPRS consists of a manure aerobic treatment system and a fit recirculation system; the solid fraction is separated and composted, whereas the aerobically treated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored swine slurry) is continuously returned to the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used; two were equipped with CPRS and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor. Results: All chemical contents of slurry pit manure in the control were greater than those of slurry pit manure in the CRPS treatment (p<0.05). Electrical conductivity and pH contents did not differ among treatments. The biological oxygen demand of the slurry pit treatment was greater than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen contents of the slurry pit treatment were greater than those of other treatments (p<0.05). Odor intensity of the CPRS treatment was lower than that of the control at indoor, exhaust, and outside sampling points (p<0.05). The temperature and carbon dioxide of the CPRS treatment in the pig barn was significantly lower than those of control (p<0.05). All measured odorous material contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CPRS application in pig farms is considered a good option as it continuously reduces the organic load of animal manure and lowers the average odorant concentration below the threshold of detecting odorous materials.

In this study, we investigated the emission concentrations of offensive odorous compounds of hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide, trimethylamine, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, buthylaldehyde, iso-valeric aldehyde, n-valeric aldehyde, ammonia. The concentrations of odorous compounds are determined by gas chromatography, HPLC and uv-vis spectroscopy. Hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide were not detected at any point examined.

  • 퇴비를 충전물질로 사용한 생물탈취상으로 난지도매립지에서 발생되는 매립지가스 처리시 악취유발물질 및 휘발성 유기화합물의 제거특성과 생물탈취상의 적용가능성을 평가하고자 하였다 본 연구는 난지도매립지 상부에서 실시하였으며 충전물질로는 난지도퇴비화시범시설에서 생산된 퇴비를 사용하였다. 약 15ppmv로 유입된 황화수소는 25cm충전깊이에서도 98%이상 제거되었으며 산소공급중단 후 혐기성가스만 유입시에는 처리효율이 30%로 저하하였다. 평균유입농도 40ppmv에서의 암모니아 제거 효율은 85%정도이었다. BTEX중 톨루엔과 에틸벤젠의 제거효율은 80%로 벤젠과 자일렌보다 높았다. 수분손실은 가스유입구에서 가장 높게 나타났으며 약 30일 운전기간 동안 pH저하에 의한 산성화는 발생하지 않았다.

Seasonal atmospheric characteristics in a swine finishing barn equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system using aerobically treated manure

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine the seasonal characteristics of odorous material emissions from a swine finishing barn equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) using aerobically treated manure. Methods: The CPRS consists of an aerobic manure treatment process and a pit recirculation system, where the solid fraction is separated and composted. The aerated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored pig slurry) is continuously recirculated to the top of the slurry in the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used: two were equipped with CPRS, and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor across all seasons. Results: The indoor, exhaust, and outside odor intensities were significantly lower in the CPRS group than in the control group (p<0.001). In the CPRS group, the odor intensity outside was significantly lower in the fall than in the other seasons (p = 0.015). In the indoor atmosphere, the temperature and CO2, NH3, and H2S contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). In the CPRS group, indoor temperature did not significantly change in the spring, summer, and fall seasons and was significantly lower in the winter (p = 0.002). NH3, H2S, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl disulfide, trimethylamine, phenol, indole, and skatole levels were significantly lower in the CPRS group than in the control group (p<0.05). There were significant seasonal differences on the odorous material in both the control and CPRS groups (p<0.05), but the pattern was not clear across seasons. Conclusion: The CPRS can reduce the indoor temperature in the summer to a level similar to that in the spring and fall seasons. The CPRS with aerated liquid manure is expected to reduce and maintain malodorous emissions within acceptable limits in swine facilities.

나노 은 입자 세정법을 이용한 무기 악취물질의 제거 (Removal of Inorganic Odorous Compounds by Scrubbing Techniques using Silver Nano-particles)

  • Silver as a metal catalyst has been used to remove odorous compounds. In this study, silver particles in nano sizes ($5{\sim}30nm$) were prepared on the surface of $NaHCO_3$, the supporting material, using a sputtering method. The silver nano-particles were dispersed by dissolving $Ag-NaHCO_3$ into water, and the dispersed silver nano-particles in the aqueous phase was applied to remove inorganic odor compounds, $NH_3$ and ${H_2}O$, in a scrubbing reactor. Since ammonia has high solubility, it was removed from the gas phase even by spraying water in the scrubber. However, the concentration of nitrate (${NO_3}^-$) ion increased only in the silver nano-particle solution, implying that the silver nano-particles oxidized ammonia. Hydrogen sulfide in the gas phase was rapidly removed by the silver nano-particles, and the concentration of sulfate (${SO_4}^{2-}$) ion increased with time due to the oxidation reaction by silver. As a result, the silver nano-particles in the aqueous solution can be successfully applied to remove odorous compounds without adding additional energy sources and producing any harmful byproducts.

초고온 호기성 퇴비화 공정을 이용한 음식물쓰레기 처리 특성 평가 (Estimation of Characteristics Treatment for Food Waste using Ultra Thermophilic Aerobic Composting Process)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of physical characteristics. Twelve specific odorous compounds and various sources of bacteria were tested via treatment of food waste using an ultra-thermophilic aerobic composting process. Food waste was mixed with seed material and operated for 47 days. During composting, the temperature was maintained at $80-90^{\circ}C$. The variations in $O_2$, $CO_2$ and $NH_3$ production suggested typical microorganism-driven organic decomposition patterns. After composting, the concentrations of 12 specific odorous compounds other than ammonia did not exceed the allowable exhaust limits for odor. After composting, thermophiles represented 50% of all bacteria. After composting, the percentage of thermophile bacterial increased by 15%. Therefore, both stable composting operation and economic benefit can be expected when an ultra-thermophilic composting process is applied to food waste.

초고온 호기성 퇴비화 공정의 복합 악취 및 악취 물질 평가 (Evaluation of Complex Odor and Odorous Compounds in a Pilot-Scale Ultra Thermophilic Aerobic Composting Process)

  • 본 연구는 정읍시에서 배출되는 하수 슬러지, 축산 분뇨, 음식물 쓰레기를 대상으로 Pilot Scale($100m^3$) 초고온 호기성 퇴비화 공정에서의 복합 악취 및 12개 지정 악취물질을 평가하였다. 각각의 대상 물질은 종균과 혼합하였고 1차 50일, 2차 60일 기간동안 운전하였다. 호기성 퇴비화가 진행됨에 따라 1차, 2차 퇴비화공정에서 온도가 상승하여 약 $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$가 되었다. 악취 분석을 위한 시료는 1차의 경우 퇴비상부에서, 2차의 경우 Pilot Plant 경계지점에서 채취하였다. 지정 악취 물질 12개 항목의 기기 분석에서 악취의 주요 원인으로는 암모니아, 메틸머캅탄, 디메틸다이설파이드, 트리메틸아민이었다. 초기 복합악취의 농도는 퇴비화 공정이 끝난 후의 농도보다 높았지만 규제기준을 넘지 않았다. 초고온 호기성 퇴비화 공정에서는 적절한 교반시점과 발효 온도가 악취 발생의 중요한 인자라고 판단된다.

산업단지에서 배출되는 악취원인물질의 규명 (Measurement of odor compounds from odorous emissions source of Industrial Complex)

  • As a typical example of simultaneous analysis of the odorous compounds, the volatile organic compounds from inventory sources in Seongseo industrial area were concentrated and analyzed with thermal desorber/GC/MSD, and major malodorous compounds were estimated. Odor intensity and odor concentration was analyzed simultaneously During a period from November in 2002 to December in 2003, this study was conducted to evaluate malodor emission characterization in major treatment facilities. The major components were Dimethyl sulfide, Dimethyl disulfide, Methyl mercaptane, Ammonia, Benzene, Toluene, m,p-xylene, o-xylene, Styrene, 1,2,4­T.M.B and 1,3,5-T.M.B. Among the six major inventory sources, the odor unit concentration of Night-soil disposal facilities was the highest, $669\~2344\;ou/m^{3}.$

온도가 남조류 Pseudanabaena redekei의 성장과 냄새물질(2-MIB) 생산에 미치는 영향 (Temperature Effect on the Growth and Odorous Material (2-MIB) Production of Pseudanabaena redekei)

  • 담수생태계에서 Pseudanabaena는 이취미 물질(2-MIB)을 생산하여 물이용을 저해하는 남조류로 알려져 있으나, 2-MIB 생산과 관련하여 이 속에 속한 균주들의 동태에 미치는 환경요인에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 P. redekei의 온도에 따른 성장과 2-MIB 생산 특성을 평가하였다. 실험에 사용된 남조류는 북한강 수계의 의암댐에서 분리하여 BG-11 배지에서 배양하였다. 실험온도 조건은 현장의 계절별 온도를 반영하여 10, 15, 20, 25, 30℃로 설정하여 18일간 배양하였으며, 2일 간격으로 전체 생물량(Chl-a)과 세포 내 함량과 세포 외 농도로 구분하여 2-MIB 농도를 측정하였다. 최고 생물량(Chl-a)과 가장 높은 총 2-MIB 농도는 각각 30℃, 25℃에서 나타났다. 세포 내 2-MIB 함량은 처리온도에 관계없이 비슷한 농도(26~29 ng L-1)를 나타냈지만, 세포 외 2-MIB 농도는 25~30℃의 고온 조건에서만 높게 나타나 온도에 따라 2-MIB 합성과 세포외 배출 특성이 다른 경향을 보여주었다. 2-MIB 생산력은 고온 조건에 비해 10~15℃의 저온 조건에서 더 높았으며, 25℃ 이상의 온도에서는 매우 낮았다. 본 연구 결과는 수온이 P. redekei의 성장과 연계하여 세포 내 2-MIB 합성과 세포 외 용출에 관여하는 중요한 인자임을 증명하였으며, 이를 통해 상수원에서 이취미 물질 발생 원인종의 성장과 이취미 물질의 동태를 이해하고, 동시에 이취미 물질 관리에 대한 중요한 기초 정보를 제공하고자 하였다.

퇴비 및 폐타이어 Granule을 이용한 악취 제거 (Odor Removal by Using Compost and Granular Scrap Tires)

  • In spite of low energy requirement, and operation and construction cost, biofilters with soil beds have not been operated efficiently. Because of excess moisture in winter and rainy periods, saturated pores in the bed prevent passage and sorption of odorous compounds. Sometimes this results in septic conditions that release previously sorbed and oxidized sulfur. Therefore, an economical and effective alternative needs to be developed. The objectives of this study were to confirm applicability of the granular scrap tires with compost for treating odorous gas as well as to obtain optimum design parameters for proposed system. In lab-scaled test, multiple stage reactors had lower headloss than a single stage reactor and less headloss was occurred for the gas with higher moisture content. For practical purpose, pilot-scaled reactor was operated to remove odor from septic tank, manure and animal wastewater treatment plant and composting machine. According to the results of pilot scaled test, $H_2S$ can be always removed completely and ammonia/amine can be removed excellently when proper moisture content is provided. The results from lab and pilot test showed that granular scrap tire could be replaced with soil as supporting material for biofilter showed excellent drainage because of its ability to reject moisture.
