  • Odor control for livestock and compost facilities has focused on manure handling and treatment during storage and land application, however, large amount of malodorous air is emitted and it is one of main sources of malodour in livestock farming. Biological treatment or biodegradation involves converting an organic contaminant to carbon dioxide and water using natural bacteria. Biofiltration is an effective air pollution control technology that uses microorganisms to breakdown gaseous contaminants and produce innocuous end products. Investment and operating costs on the biofiltration are lower than for thermal and chemical oxidation processes. This paper is intended to provide an overview of basic design and operating criteria for biofilters to control odors from livestock and compost facilities.

  • The need for developing sustainable solutions for managing the animal waste is vital for the future of the animal industry in North Carolina. As part of that process, the North Carolina Attorney General has concluded that the public interest will be served by the development and implementation of environmentally superior swine waste management technologies appropriate to each category of hog farms. To facilitate in the development, testing, and evaluation of potential technologies it is necessary that all aspects of environmental issues (air, water, soil, odor and odorants, and disease-transmitting vectors and airborne pathogens) be addressed as Part of a comprehensive strategy, Program OPEN (Odor, Pathogens, and Emissions of Nitrogen) Is comprehensively addressing these issues.

  • Purpose: This study is about photocatalytic technology and plasma oxidation-reduction technology. To the main cause of exposure to odor pollution, two deodorization techniques were applied to develop a module with higher removal efficiency and ozone reduction effect. Research design, data and methodology: A composite module was constructed by arranging two types of dry deodorization equipment (catalyst, adsorbent) in one module. This method was designed to increase the responsiveness to the components of complex odors and the environment. standard, unity, two types of oxidizing photo-catalyst technology and plasma dry deodorization device installed in one module to increase the potential by reduction to 76% of ozone, 100%, and 82%. Results: The complex odor disposal efficiency was 92%. Ammonia was processed with 50% hydrogen sulfide and 100% hydrogen sulfide, and ozone was 0.01ppm, achieving a target value of 0.07ppm or less. The combined odor showed a disposal efficiency of 93%, ammonia was 82% and hydrogen sulfide was 100% processed, and ozone achieved a target value of 0.07 ppm or less. Conclusions: Ozone removal efficiency was 76% by increasing Oxidation-Reduction Reaction(ORR). The H2S removal efficiency of the deodorizer was higher than that of the biofilter system currently used in sewage disposal plants.

  • The urban railway system is a convenient public transportation system, as it carries many people without increasing traffic congestion. However, air quality in urban railway environments is worse than ambient air quality due to the internal location of the source of air pollutants and the isolated space. In this paper, characteristics of particulate matter (PM) pollution in urban railway environments are described from the perspective of diurnal variation, chemical composition and source apportionment of PM. PM concentrations in concourse, platform, passenger cabin, and tunnel are summarized through an analysis of 34 journal articles published in Korea and overseas. This information will be helpful in developing effective policies to reduce PM pollution in urban railway environments.
