The purpose of this experiment was to check the effects on metal corrosion of the 6 types of tree (Ash tree, Japanese cedar, black walnut, western hemlock, paulownia coreana and maple) which are currently being used, or the use of which is under study, by the Museum. As a method of test, an Oddy Test was conducted where the materials to be tested and the metal test piece are exposed to a specified temperature and humidity for a long period of time and the effects of materials on the test piece are observed. The results of the Oddy Test conducted on all 6 types of tree showed slight difference in the form of metal corrosion, and except for the blank, corrosion occurred on the entire surface of most iron (Fe) and lead (Pb) test pieces. Minor level of discoloration was noted in all test pieces of copper (Cu) even though different levels.
The effect of air pollutants coming from internal museum materials such as wood-based products and cements on metal corrosion have been investigated. The Oddy test and the Chamber test was employed as a corrosion test. The metal pieces after the Oddy test had different corrosion types caused by the internal museum materials. The most effective wood based product was 18T HS(E0) and 9mm plywood(F0,E0). Iron(Fe) and copper(Cu) also bronze of the Chamber test had corrosion caused by Formic acid, Acetic acid, and Acetaldehyde. The packing materials in high humidity had caused more corrosion on the surface of the metal pieces than in low humidity.
The experiment attempts to find out the effect of the mixture of the antimicrobial agent and insecticide on metallic material including Silver(99.9%), Copper(99.9%), Lead(99.9%) and Iron(99.5%) by Oddy test. The mixtures of the antimicrobial agent and insecticide were prepared in 60ml; with the standard concentration of 17.5% in B77 Essential oil mixture, one for mixture of concentration of ${\pm}1{\sim}2%$ and insect repellent material; the other for mixture of low concentration and antimicrobial agent(BS-2 and BS-3) material. After Oddy test, we investigated the variation in the surface of the samples by visual inspection, weighing, color measurement and SEM-EDS analysis. The result showed that Lead had the biggest change in the surface, and Copper had the biggest change in the color. In addition, changes in the samples before and after the experiment were found to be greatest at concentration of 19% of Essential oil mixture of the antimicrobial agent and insecticide. Also, B78 Essential oil mixture produce change in samples. It means when the concentration of oil mixture rises, the variation of the samples gets bigger. And, the low concentration of mixture including B77 Essential oil mixture and B78 Essential oil mixture also produce big change in the samples. However, the low concentration of B77 Essential oil mixture that do not contain B78 Essential oil mixture was able to confirm that the change of the surface is not large.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional properties of natural dyed Hanji for cultural properties conservation and storage. To estimate functional properties of Hanji, antimicrobial, insect repellent test, and Oddy test were executed. Hanji dyed with 10% Golden thread (Coptis chinensis), a natural dye and silver nitrate mordanting showed the most excellent antifungal activities against A. niger, P. chrysogenum, and Trichoderma sp. before and after aging. The insects repellent test followed didn't indicate significant effects on treated Hanji against Lasioderma serricorne, Sitophilus zeamais, and Tribolium castaneum. According to Oddy test result, Hanji dyed with Golden thread and silver nitrate caused no significant corrosions on copper, silver, and lead after aging 28 days.
The National Museum of Korea has a collection of various materials. In particular, items made from organic materials such as wood, paper, and leather are vulnerable to the influence of insects and germs, requiring fumigation as well as pesticides and bactericides. The influence of pesticides and bactericides on the change in dyed paper was examined by applying the oddy test used to confirm the toxicity of various materials used in museums. Results revealed that the products of B and H companies had the least influence on the change in dyed paper. On the other hand, the result of the examination of cochineal and curcuma dyed paper revealed a significant change in the control group compared to the one exposed together with dyed paper, probably because of humidity rather than the sample.
In this study, the stability of the adhesive was determined through the Oddy Test that is Verification Test for potential damage by various materials. And to find the factor causing the corrosion of the metal samples, the adhesives and coatings those are usually used in the metal preservation process were selected and treated on the samples. Six kinds of adhesives and four kinds of metal specimens Fe, Pb, Cu, Ag were used. As results, the weight change showed high increasement in the rate of weight change 29.87% of Fe sample. The chromaticity measurement showed the high change value of the Cellulose-based adhesive. In case of the VOCs test from adhesive by using GC-MS, Acetic acid was detected from all six kinds of the adhesives. Compared to cellulose-based adhesives and the other adhesives, the amount of VOCs per 1mg concentration is higher than 900 times and was detected small amount of Formic acid. This is assumed to be facilitated by acid impurities and the light. This reaction was considered as the result of reducing a large amount of molecular and of generating a large amount of Nox. And thus the reacted sulfur changes was considered as the factor for causing corrosion.
The National Museum of Korea has striven for the stable preservation environment for its collection as it reopened in October 2005. The temperature and humidity, harmful gases in the collection storage space and the galleries were regularly measured to confirm whether the environment was stable for the collection; the material that could directly influence the collection such as showcases were tested in advance to select stable material. In addition, to prevent biological damage, whole collection was fumigated; insect monitoring traps have been regularly established to check the status of the collection storage space.
Dyestuffs extracted from fifteen kinds of natural dyeing materials were researched on their antimicrobial performance against 3 kinds of bacteria and 2 kinds of fungi in order to develop conservation/storage materials of traditional and natural dyed papers. The three types of mordants were evaluated by using the same method and then mixed with the dyestuffs to research their antimicrobial performance. With those results, dyed paper was made by mixing mordants with 9 kinds of dyestuffs with excellent antimicrobial performance. Among the dyed papers, Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendri amurense, Rhus javanica and Acer ginnala multiple mordant papers were found to have an antibacterial quality against fungi, while, in the insect repellent experiment using termites, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense dyed papers were found to have insect repellent qualities. Also, with regard to the research result about the affect of dyeing paper on other materials like metal, Coptis chinensis have relatively stable qualities. Also, the three types of dyeed paper by Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense, were found to have a tendency to remove harmful gases. Not only can these dyed papers be used for making storage box for cultural properties to prevent various organic artifacts from bio-damaging, but they can also be utilized as functional finishing materials in various spaces.
