A specimen of the unknown form of Octopus species was collected from Onsan, Kyungsangnam-do, eastern coast of Korea on 20th June 2004 with a bottom trawl. The specimen distinguished from the other Octopus species reported hitherto by its extremely short 2nd pair of arm and hectocotilization of the right 4th arm. It may be described, therefore, as new species, but only one specimen was collected unfortunately. A new name will be deferred, consequently, until more specimens will be available in the future.
The mature sperms of three species of cephalopods (Octopus minar, Octopus ocellatus, Todarodes pacificus) were observed by electron microscopy. The results obtained are as follows: The sperm lengths of Octopus minor and Octopus ocellatus of octopods are long and they are about $390{\mu}m$ and $125\sim130{\mu}m$, respectively, but the sperm length of Todarodes pacificus is short and about $35{\mu}m$. The sperm of Octopus minor has a helical acrosome and a head bent a little like a banana while Octopus ocellatus of octopod has a twisted acrosome and a long rod-shaped head. A number of horizontal stripes are observed as a periodic structure in their subacrosome cavities and dense plugs are formed in the cavities of their heads. On the other hand, the acrosome of Todarodes pacificus is circular cap-shaped, and its head is long and oval. It is notable that two small cavities were observed in its basal acrosome. Juxtanuclear acrosomal materials of high electron density filled the subacrosomal cavity. In the middle piece of mature sperms of Octopus minor and Octopus ocellatus, the mitochondria form the mitochondrial sleeve, but the numbers of mitochondria differ between the species so that they are $11\sim12$ and $8\sim9$, respectively. Meanwhile, in the middle piece of mature sperms of Todarodes pacificus, the mitochondria are separated from the axoneme, forming a mitochondrial spur in which $10\sim13$ mitochondria and some electron dense materials concentrate. The axoneme of Octopus minor, Octopus ocellatus and Todarodes pacificus are of 9+2 type in common, surrounded by 9 coarse fibres. A number of glycogen were observed only in the axoneme of Todarodes pacificus. The coarse fibres were found as far as the main piece of sperm tail in Octopks minor and Todarodes pacificus, while to the end piece of sperm tail in Octopus ocellatus.

This study examined and compared the exopeptidase and endoprotease activities of the hepatopancreas (HP) of cuttlefish, squid, and octopus species. The protein concentration in crude extract (CE) from octopus HP was 3,940 mg/100 g, lower than those in CEs from squid HP (4,157 mg/100 g) and cuttlefish HP (5,940 mg/100 g). With azocasein of pH 6 as a substrate, the total activity in HP CE of octopus was 31,000 U, lower than the values for cuttlefish (57,000 U) and squid (69,000 U). Regardless of sample type, the total activities of the CEs with azocasein as the substrate were higher at pH 6 (31,000-69,000 U) than at pH 9 (19,000-34,000 U). With L-leucine-p-nitroanilide (LeuPNA) of pH 6 as the substrate, the total activity of the HP CE from octopus was 138,000 U, higher than values from both cuttlefish HP (72,000 U) and squid HP (63,000 U). Regardless of sample type, the total activities of the CEs with LeuPNA as the substrate were higher at pH 6 (63,000-138,000 U) than at pH 9 (41,000-122,000 U). With LeuPNA as the substrate, the total activities of the CEs from octopus HP and cuttlefish HP were higher at pH 6 than at pH 9. However, there was no difference in total activity between pH 6 and 9 for squid HP CE with LeuPNA as the substrate. These results suggest that the octopus HP is superior to the cuttlefish HP and squid HP as a potential resource for extracting exopeptidases. Exopeptidases from octopus HP have potential industrial applications and their use might aid in reducing pollution related to the octopus industry.

In order to investigate the influence of sea condition on the catch fluctuation of long line for common octopus, octopus variabilis, the oceanographic factors. I. e., the wind direction, the wind speed, the age of moon and ebb tide and flood tide in the coastal waters of Yosu from Jan. 11 to Jul. 25 in 1997, and compared with the catches of common octopus, octopus variabilis by long line. The results obtained summerized as follows: 1) The catch of common octopus was highest in wind direction from SE and lowest in that from NW. The catch was highest at the wind speed of 2m/sec and decreased with increasing speed, over 2m/sec. 2) The catch of common octopus was highest at the day of neap tide and lowest at the mid day, from neap tide to spring tide. More strictly the catch was higher during days at which the current became rapid than during days at which the current became slow. The catch was higher always at flood tide than at ebb tide in all the days investigated and highest with in one hour from ebb tide.

Giant pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, is a large mollusk distributed in the East Sea of Korea. In this study, the catch status of giant pacific octopus by drift line fishery and the effect of sea temperature on fishing ground were investigated in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, which is the central coast of the East Sea. The average catch of giant pacific octopus in Gangwon-do was 1,570 tons over the past ten years, and it accounted for 21% in 2008 and 44% in 2021 compared to the total catch in the East Sea during the same period. Such data indicates that the catch in Gangwon-do has recently increased. In this study area, giant pacific octopus weighing 1.1-5.0 kg dominated accounting for 56% of the total individuals, and followed by those weighing 1 kg or less. However, the ratio of catch of giant pacific octopus over 5.1 kg tended to increase in 2021, which is thought to be related to the sea temperature that affected the fishing ground. The main depth of fishing ground was from 21 m to 50 m in this area and fishing grounds were widely distributed throughout the season except summer. Fishing ground was formed with the conditions of bottom sea temperature under 10℃ and was diminished by moving of giant pacific octopus to deeper depth with conditions of bottom sea temperature over 18℃.

The purpose of this study is to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species in Jeju Island. Samples were collected from coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea by coastal trap fishery from January to November 2021. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 1984. The mantle length (ML) ranged from 4.5 to 17.8 cm and body weight (BW) ranged form 88.5 to 2,657.5 g. A χ2-test revealed that the number of males was significantly greater than females (χ2 = 32.712, df = 10, P<0.05). Mature females were found from January to July and male occurred January to August. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from July to August than other months. The relationship between mantle length and body weight was BW = 2.4527ML2.3139 (female) and BW = 2.6785ML2.3159 (male). At 50% group maturity, female and male average weight was estimated to be 554.7 g and 330.6 g, respectively.

Maturity and spawning of the giant Pacific octopus, Octopus dofleini was investigated based on the samples collected in the coast of Gangwondo, East Sea, from January to December in 2009. Individuals of mature stage had a higher occurrence rate from February to May, and gonadosomatic index (GSI) also showed a higher value from February to May than the other months. For that reason, the spawning period was estimated from February to May with the main spawning period from March to May. The total number of eggs in the fecundity (F) ranged from 9,045 in 11.0 kg (TW) to 148,682 in 16.5 kg (TW), which was proportional to total weight (TW), and the relationship between total weight and fecundity was $F=0.185{\times}TW^{2.238}$ ($R^2=0.389$). The total weight at 50% group maturity (TW0.5) of female was estimated to be 12.2 kg.
Picosecond time-resolved and static protein fluorescence spectra and absorption spectra of octopus rhodopsin, a photorecepting protein, are measured and compared with those of bacteriorhodopsin, a photon-induced proton pumping protein, to understand the protein conformations and functions of octopus rhodopsin and its deprotonated photocycle intermediate. The bluer and weaker absorption of retinal indicates that octopus rhodopsin is better in thermal noise suppression but less efficient in light harvesting than bacteriorhodopsin. The protein fluorescence of octopus rhodopsin shows the characteristic of Trp only and the uantum efficiency and lifetime variations may result primarily from variations in the coupling strength with the retinal. The stronger intensity by four times and larger red shift by 12 nm of fluorescence suggest that octopus rhodopsin has more open and looser structure compared with bacteriorhodopsin. Fluorescence decay profiles reveal two decay components of 300 ps (60%) and 2 ns (40%). The deprotonation of protonated Schiff's base increases the shorter decay time to 500 ps and enhances the fluorescence intensity by 20%. The fluorescence and its decay time from Trp residues near retinal are influenced more by the deprotonation. The increase of fluorescence intimates that protein structure becomes loosened and relaxed further by the deprotonation of protonated Schiff's base. The driving force of sequential changes initiated by absorption of a photon is too exhausted after the deprotonation to return the intermediate to the ground state of the begun rhodopsin form.

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the octopus pot according to mesh sizes. Entering behavior of Octopus minor and bait (Macrophthalmus japonicus) escape rate on the mesh sizes of the pots were investigated for six times in indoor tank. The sea trials for evaluating the performance of Octopus minor pot to different mesh sizes (22, 20 and 18 mm) were conducted for six times from 2017 to 2018 in the coastal sea of Deukyang Bay, the Republic of Korea. Behavior patterns of contact pot to leaved pot were more frequent than contact pot to bait search. When the octopus contacted to the pot, there was no clear search behavior to distinguish the mesh sizes. Total catch of 46% was accounted for 18 mm pots, followed by 34% at 20 mm and 20% at 22 mm (P < 0.05). Catch per unit effort was calculated as 30 g/pot at 22 mm, 44 g/pot at 20 mm and 59 g/pot at 18 mm. As a result of evaluating 50% selection of mantle length and weight on the mesh sizes, mantle length (mm) and weight (g) were 84.6 and 147.8 in 22 mm, followed by 20 and 18 mm.
