Three sterol sulfates were isolated from AMPK activity-guided fraction of a marine sponge Acanthodoryx fibrosa. Their structures were determined by an extensive NMR analysis, MS data, and two compounds were confirmed as unusual phosphorylated sterol sulfates by comparing with NMR data of the known compounds. Compound 3 was given to be a new dephosphated sterol sulfate derivative. Compound 1 moderately showed AMPK activation effect on L6 myoblast cell through Western blot analysis.
We report the distribution of $^{210}$ Pb and various metallic elements (Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, Sr, Ba, Zn, V, Cr, Zr, Ni, Cu, and Y) in the sediment cores from six shellfish-farming bays in the South Sea of Korea. The $^{210Pb}$ inventories in Deukryang, Gwangyang, and Goseong Bay cores were comparable to those expected from the known fallout input. However, the $^{210}$ Pb inventories were two times higher in Jinju, Gangjin, and Hansan-Koeje Bay cores, suggesting an important role of other sources such as fluvial inputs. Based on the enrichment factor analyses, non-detrital fractions of all the measured elements were found to be insignificant. The Mn was highly enriched only in the surface sediments of the Jinju and Goseong Bay, which implies that the surface-sediment environment of these bays is efficiently oxidizing Mn remobilized from either pore waters or bottom seawaters. These data set provides the sources of heavy metal in sediment around shellfish farms and the current level of metallic elements for the future monitoring.
With a realistic geography and topography the Princeton Ocean Model is used to study the effects of topography, wind and time-varying Chanajiang (Yangtze) River discharge on the dispersion of the Chanaiiang River plume in the Yellow and East China Seas. The topographic feature of deepening offshore suppresses the offshore expansion of the discharged low salinity water while spreading along the coast is not hindered. Also the spreading of the Chanajiang River plume is very sensitive to wind conditions and the southerly wind is most responsible for the eastward expansion toward the Cheju Island. It is also shown that the influence of the Chanajiang River Diluted Water on the hydrography and circulation of the Yellow Sea including the South Sea of Korea is substantial even in the absence of tide, wind and current.
Three different outflow boundary conditions are considered in modeling the East Sea circulation. The first one is that of the conventional constant volume transport (CT). The second one is the Orlanski radiation boundary condition (OR). The third one is that of the constant sea level just outside the outflow boundary (SL). In the third condition, the outflow current is set to be driven by the sea level differences across the outflow open-boundary lines, based on the recent knowledge that the Tsushima Current is driven by the sea level differences across the inflow and outflow boundaries. In case of OR it takes too much time to reach the steady state, resulting in a large increase of Tsushima Current Water in the basin and low level of kinetic energy. Both CT and SL reach the steady state in a relatively short time. However, SL is more recommendable, because it is based on physical background and generates less numerical noises than CT.
In order to understand the characteristics of sedimentary environments in Ulleung Basin of the East Sea (Sea of Japan), three sediment cores were taken with a box corer during R/V Tamyang cruise in October 1999. Activities of $^{7}Be,{\;}^{210}Pb,{\;}^{226}Ra,{\;}^{234}Th,{\;}^{238}{\;}and{\;}^{137}Cs$ in sediment samples were determined by non-destructive gamma-ray spectrometry. Rates of sedimentation and particle mixing were estimated by best fitting an advectiondiffusion particle mixing model to the data of $^{7}Be,{\;}^{234}Th,{\;}and{\;}^{210}Pb$. Estimated sedimentation rates were 0.06-0.08 cm/yr and particle mixing rates were $0.13-0.65{\;}\textrm{cm}^2/yr$. The use of multiple tracers in our study prevented us from probable up to 38% overestimation of sedimentation rates.
This paper describes and assesses the parameterisation of MP, the microplankton compartment of the carbonnitrogen microplanktondetritus model. The compartment is 'the microbial loop in a box' and includes pelagic bacteria and protozoa as well as phytoplankton. The paper presents equations and parameter values for the autotroph and microheterotroph components of the microplankton. Equations and parameter values for the microplankton as a whole are derived on the assumption of a constant 'heterotroph fraction'. The autotroph equations of MP allow variation in the ratios of nutrient elements to carbon, and are largely those of the 'cellquota, thresholdlimitation' algal growth model, which can deal with potential control of growth by several nutrients and light. The heterotroph equations, in contrast, assume a constant elemental composition. Nitrogen is used as the limiting nutrient in most of the model description, and is special in that MP links chlorophyll concentration to the autotroph nitrogen quota.
Salinity ecotypes in Ulva pertusa Kjellman were examined for the growth responses of the three isolates taken from different salinity regimes. All isolates showed a broad salinity tolerance, but growth patterns were correlated with the salinity regime of their original habitat. The germlings from Anin exhibited optimum growth at the native salinity of 32%. The germlings from Yongyon which had hypersaline habitats were tolerable to high salinity, i.e. growth rates peaked at 40%, whereas those from Samgando which had low salinities achieved maximum growth rate at 24\%. The germlings of inter-isolate cross demonstrated intermediate growth response between that of their respective parents. Our data also clearly indicated intraspecific differences among the three isolates, which was interpreted as development of different physiological ecotypes. We conclude that U. pertusa may consist of several ecotypes, each of which has some capacity for physiological adaptation to salinity variations.
The species composition and distribution patterns of the subtidal benthic faunal assemblage in Sokmo and Yomha Channels and Kyonggi Bay were studied in spring and fall of 1989 and correlated to some environmental variables: temperature, salinity and substrate type. For both seasons, a total of 7,779 organisms were counted belonging to 244 species. Of these, 3,647 organisms in 185 species were counted for spring (March 1989) and 4,132 in 189 species for fall (September 1989). The oyster, Cressostrea gigas and the tellinidean bivalve, Moerella rutilla were the two most abundant species in the spring, constituting 17.22%and 6.47% of the total abundance respectively. While in the fall, the barnacle, Balanus reticulatus and macrura, Ogyrides orientalis dominated comprising 13.72% and 6.87 % of the total number of individuals. Community structure analysis revealed good correlations with the variations of salinity in Yomha and Sokmo Channels and sedimentary facies in Kyonggi Bay, Korea.
Acartia bifilosa has been classified as Rostratae group of Acartia by the characteristic of having the rostral filament. However, we have found that A. bifilosa does not have any rostrum. Therefore, A. bifilosa should be classified as Arostratae group. For the first time, we have observed that this species has only one genital pore in the genital segment. Two spermathecal canals are looped in lateral view as well as ventral view. We have also observed two thin, very short filaments and minute apertures on the anterio-ventral part of the top of the head. The function of the filaments need to be investigated.
Different model formulations in available models were compared with Microplankton-Detritus (MPB) model, and well documented FDM and ERSEM models were the candidate for these comparison. Different formulations in both candidate models were expressed in terms of MPD parameterization. Even though there are differences in the control of autotroph growth among models, it was found that some of the more important microplankton parameters expressed incomparable terms have broadly similar values in all the models. However, an important difference was proved to be the direct contribution of microheterotrophs to the Detritus compartment in FDM and ERSEM, whereas in MPD microplankton biomass passes to Detritus only by way of mesozooplankton grazing.
