A Coanda effect which is known to provide a high lift in a high drag condition has been applied to a flapped rudder of a ship. Model experiments and numerical simulations on the Coanda effect of the flapped rudder have been carried out at various situations and the results are compared to each other. It I found that a remarkable increase in the rudder force occur due to the Coanda effect and that the results ould be utilized for the design of a high-lift rudder system.

We studied the effect of methanol extract of Pachydictyon coriaceum (PC) on atopic allergic reaction. PC dose-dependently inhibited interleukin (IL)-8 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-$\alpha$ secretion from the PMA- pius A23187- stimulated HMC-1. PC also dose-dependently inhibited the histamine and $\beta$-hexosaminidase release from mast cells. PC had no cytotoxic effect. (omitted)
This study used questionnaires to investigate how pre-service elementary teachers understand ocean acidification. As a result of gender, female teachers were more aware of ocean acidification than male teachers, but male teachers had a higher average rate of correct answers, with a lower standard deviation. Teachers from the natural sciences knew more about ocean acidification than did teachers the liberal arts. Teachers ranked environmental crisis in order of most dangerous to least dangerous as follow: global warming and the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, ocean acidification, and acid rain. About 46.7% of teachers learn about ocean acidification through education, followed by broadcasts, school lectures and the internet. The educational materials most desired for teachers were videos related to ocean acidification. Pre-service elementary teachers have two broad perspectives on ocean acidification. Firstly, they refer to economic loss and food shortages, and secondly, they note that there is a need for improved awareness and publicity about ocean acidification. The role of elementary school teachers is important because their awareness of environmental issues has a considerable effect on teachers perception of the environment. Revitalizing education on ocean acidification and government support are necessary to effectively communicate the seriousness of ocean acidification. Lastly, we need to study ocean acidification in detail so as to be able to persevere toward protecting our ocean ecosystem.
This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.
The motions and drift forces of side-by-side moored FSRU and LNGC including the sloshing effect, were studied using experiments. The FSRU and LNGC contained LNG cargo tanks and the LNG sloshing could affect the motions and drift forces of the structures due to its coupling with floating body motion. The effect of coupling can vary with the LNG filling level, and the effect of the filling level was investigated. The coupling effect was stronger at lower filling level. It was confirmed that longitudinal sloshing influenced the surge and surge mean drift force in head sea. In addition, gap flow affected the sway and mean drift forces. Sloshing attenuated the sway and yaw excited by gap flow in side-by-side configuration.
This study presents an investigation of the characteristics of piezoelectric sensors whose main utilization is to measure impact pressure. The piezoelectric sensors were tested from several points of view. Their characteristics were investigated for repeatability, the effect of the diameter, temperature effect, water purity, flush mounting, and AC and DC coupling. Out of these, it was revealed that the temperature effect is very significant. The characteristics of the AC and DC coupling are also very important in understanding the time history of the impact pressure.
Recently, Kim and Mauborgne (2005a) has introduced the concept of blue ocean strategy that provides quantum leap in value innovation, thus creating new market space. This study, based on the blue ocean strategy concept, suggests blue ocean new product development strategy, and attempts to examine how much impact this blue ocean new product development strategy has on new product performance, compared to existing new product development strategy perspectives based on competitive strategy-based new product development strategy and resource-based new product development strategy, in an empirical way. The research results show that the blue ocean new product development strategy has a statistically significant impact on new product performance. In addition, it was revealed that such contingency variables as firm size and environmental dynamism have moderating effect on the relationship between the blue ocean new product development strategy and new product performance. The blue ocean new product development strategy is more effective in the small-sized firms than the large-sized ones, and its effect on new product performance is different according to environmental dynamism.
Welding processes cause undesirable problems, such as residual stresses and deformations due to the thermal loads imposed by local heating, melting, and cooling processes. This paper presents a computational modeling technique to simulate the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process, emphasizing the effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution. Both a three-bar analogy and a three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analysis are carried out in order to explain the effect. Element (de)activation, enthalpy, and adjustment of the reference temperature of thermal strain are considered with respect to the effect of the weld filler metal added to the base metal during a thermo-elastic-plastic analysis. Stress distributions obtained by the present study are compared with measured values and available data from other studies. The effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution is discussed and demonstrated.
A numerical method to investigate the non-linear motion characteristics of a TLP is established. A time domain simulation that includes the memory effect using the convolution integral is used to consider the transient effect of TLP motion. The hydrodynamic coefficients and wave force are calculated using a potential flow model based on the HOBEM(higher order boundary element method). The viscous drag force acting on the platform and tendons is also considered by using Morison’s drag. The results of the present numerical method are compared with experimental data. The focus is the nonlinear effect due to the viscous drag force on the TLP motion. The ringing, springing, and drift motion are due to the drag force based on Morison's formula.
