Polymer induced turbulent drag reduction in a rotating disk apparatus was investigated using four different molecular weights of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) in a synthetic seawater solution for the purpose of potential application to the cold water piping in the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) system. To apply drag reduction to the OTEC we measured the temperature dependence on the drag reduction efficiency. From this study, it was found that the drag reduction efficiency increases with the temperature and the concentration. To measure the drag reduction efficiency during the operation period, the drag reduction behavior was detected as a function of time and the results obtained from the experiment was compared to the Brostow's model equation.
In this paper, EP-Kalina cycle applying liquid-vapor ejector and motive pump is newly proposed. In this EP-Kalina cycle, the liquid-vapor ejector is used to increase pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the turbine. Also the motive pump enhances the performance of liquid-vapor ejector, resulting in increase of system efficiency of OTEC cycles. The comparison cycles in this study are basic, Kalina, EKalina and EP-Kalina ones. The pump work, net power, APRe, APRc, TPP and system efficiency of each cycle are compared. In case of net power, EP-Kalina cycle is lowest among the cycles due to the application of the motive pump. But, the net power difference of cycles seems to be minor since the pump work of cycles is merely about 1kW, compared to turbine gross power of 20kW. The system efficiency of EP-Kalina cycle shows 3.22%, relatively 44% higher than that of basic OTEC cycle. Therefore, the system efficiency is increased by applying the liquid-vapor ejector and the motive pump. Additional performance analysis is necessary to optimize the proposed EP-Kalina cycle.

In this paper, the cycle performance analysis for condensation and evaporation capacity, total work and efficiency of ocean thermal energy conversion power system using R744 ($CO_2$) is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of this system. The operating parameters considered in this study include superheating and subcooling degree, evaporation and condensation temperature, pump and turbine efficiency. The main results were summarized as follows : The evaporation capacity of R744 increases with superheating and subcooling degree, but decreases with the increasing condensation temperature. The total work increases with superheating and subcooling degree of R744, but decreases with the increasing evaporating temperature. And, the efficiency increases with subcooling and superheating degree, but decreases with the increasing condensation temperature. Therefore, superheating and subcooling degree, evaporation and condensation temperature and pump and turbine efficiency of R744 OTEC power system have an effect on the evaporation and condensation capacity, total work and efficiency of this system. With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to design the OTEC power cycle using R744.
The purpose of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant control is to provide stable power efficiently by appropriately regulating the seawater flow rates and the working fluid flow rate under conditions of continually changing seawater temperatures. This paper describes digital control of working fluid flow rate based on an adaptive control theory for the "Imari 2" OTEC plant at Saga University. Provisions have been made for linkage between the software of the adaptive control theory and the hardware of the OTEC plant. In implementing the working fluid flow rate control, if persistency of excitation conditions are lost, the algorithm of identification often exhibits bursting phenomena. To avoid this difficulty, the stopping-and-starting rule for identification was derived and was used for the working fluid flow rate control. Satisfactory control performance was then obtained by using this digital control system.ol system.

In order to study the improvement of the multi stage regeneration cycles, muti-stage processes were applied to the cycles, respectively or together. The kinds of the cycles are multi stage reheater cycle (MS) and multi stage reheater regeneration cycle (MSR). Working fluid used was R134a and R245fa. Temperature of the heat source was $65^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, and $85^{\circ}C$, and temperature of the heat sink was $5^{\circ}C$. Optimization simulation was conducted for improving the gross power and efficiency with multi stage reheater regeneration cycle for ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) with changing of a heat source, kind of the working fluid, and type of the cycle. Performance analysis of the various components was simulated by using the Aspen HYSYS for analysis of the thermodynamic cycle. R245fa shows better performance than R134a. This paper showed the most suitable working fluid with changing of a heat source and the kinds of working cycle. Compared to each other, MS showed better performance at gross power and MSR showed higher cycle efficiency.

A study on the improvement for cycle efficiency of closed-type ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) was studied to obtain the basic data for the optimal design of cycle. For that, OTEC cycle with a generator, a reheater and a multi-turbine was simulated and analyzed. The basic thermodynamic model for OTEC is Rankine cycle and the surface seawater of $26^{\circ}C$ and deep seawater of $5^{\circ}C$ were used for the heat source of evaporator and condenser, respectively. Ammonia is used as the working fluid. The cycle efficiency increased when generator is added with 0.9 generator effectiveness. When the reheater and multi-turbine are applied in the basic cycle, the cycle efficiency showed 3.14% and the capacity of heat exchanger decreased for same total cycle power. For the OTEC cycle with the generator, the reheater and the multi-turbine showed the highest cycle efficiency and increased the efficiency by more than 6.5% comparing with the basic OTEC cycle.
In this paper, Performance of 1MW OTEC system using R32 with varying seawater temperature range is studied. Steady state cycle is designed and its output and generation efficiency were 1,014kW and 2.72%, respectively. Compared to dynamic cycle, system performance and change during long term operation is studied. The simulation is performed by decreasing surface seawater temperature from $29^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ with 20 minute of reaction time. Dynamic cycle with same condition applied to steady state cycle and it showed output and efficiency of 1,020kW and 2.75% respectively. Seawater temperature decreased from $29^{\circ}C$ and the vapor fraction of refrigerant decreased below 1 at $28^{\circ}C$. While the vapor fraction was above 1, the turbine output decreased by 0.017kW per second. After the seawater temperature reached $26.2^{\circ}C$, the turbine output decreased by 1.03kW per second. However, Driving the turbine below the saturation temperature caused the occurrence of surging and the influx of liquid refrigerant. When the liquid separator having a capacity of 1.0 m3 was used, the flow into the turbine was confirmed after 5 minutes from the first liquid refrigerant coming into the separator.

Plate heat exchanger are being applied in the field of OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) and SWAC (seawater air conditioning) system. This study is to analyze numerically the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics by using solid works flow simulation in order to offer optimum design data of plate heat exchanger. Plater heat exchanger proposed in this study is four types. The geometric design parameters of plate heat exchanger are a channel space, a flow orientation, a plate array, the flowrate of working fluid and so on. The main results for numerical analysis of plate heat exchangers are summarized as follows. Heat transfer performance for the channel space of 2.4 mm shows the highest value compared to other spaces. And, the Type 4 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the highest performance. From the pressure drop characteristics of plate heat exchanger, the channel space of 3.2 mm shows the lowest value. And Type 1 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the lowest pressure drop.
This study found potential ability to generate electric power using difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea which includes the East Sea Proper Water with the temperature less than 1$^{\circ}C$ throughout a year without seasonal variation. To quantify the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea. We computed the annual mean ($^{\circ}C$), the annual amplitude ($^{\circ}C$), the annual phase (degree) and the duration time which showed more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference from the water temperature data using Harmonic analysis during 1961~1997. The best place for generating electric power in the East Sea seems to be the eastward ocean areas (36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 129$^{\circ}$ 48'E~36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 130$^{\circ}$ 00E'E) from Pohang city. The annual mean of the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and 500 m depth was 24$^{\circ}$C at the place to generate electric power in August according to the data of 1961~1997. the maximum duration periods with more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference were 215 days (5/5-12/10) a year in the place mentioned electricity with a stable plan. In the East Sea coastal areas of the Korean peninsula, the average minimum depth to reach the East Sea Proper Water from surface water is 300 m and fluctuates between 250 m and 350 m throughout a year. Further studies could be needed for the utilization of cold water, such as the East Sea Proper Water for energy conversion.
In this study, for the purpose of reduction of $CO_2$ gas emission and to increase recovery of waste heat from ships, the ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle) is investigated and offered for the conversion of temperature heat to electricity from waste heat energy from ships. Simulation is performed with waste heat from the exhaust gasse which is relatively high temperature and cooling sea water which is relatively low temperature from ships. The result shows that 1,000kW power generation is available from exhaust gas and 600kW power generation is available from sea water cooling system. Different fluid is used for simulation of the ORC system with variable temperature and flow condition and efficiency of system and output power is compared.
