Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of organizational support, risk perception and job satisfaction on safety consciousness in confined space works. Background: Confined space works are rated as hazardous works with high injury frequency and fatalities. But there were few researches for the occupational injury of the confined space workers. Method: Questionnaire survey targeting 236 workers working in confined spaces were carried out to construct the structural equation model on safety consciousness. The participants were all male workers, and they install and maintain or clean facilities mainly in the confined spaces. Results: A structural equation model for safety consciousness was proposed, and validated based on perceived organizational support, risk perception and job satisfaction factors. Perceived 'organizational support' contributed significantly to 'worker's safety consciousness' both directly and indirectly. Also, perceived 'worker's safety consciousness' was also affected by perceived 'job satisfaction' and 'risk perception'. In terms of magnitude of relationships, the direct effect of perceived 'job satisfaction' on 'worker's safety consciousness' was the greatest among the interrelationships among latent factors. Conclusion: Workers' safety consciousness can function as a leading indicator for safety and hazard prevention of workers. Application: The results can be used in developing safety prevention programs for confined space workers.
The objectives of this study were to compare the results of HSL (Health and Safety Laboratory) ramp test with perceived sense of slip onto the several different floor surfaces under contaminated conditions. There are a variety of approaches from biomechanical measurements to psychophysical test and human perception. However, controversies over these approaches still remain. Some widely accepted methods need to be improved. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was used to evaluate the perception of slipperiness of seven different floor surfaces under the contaminated condition with glycerol solution. Twelve subjects worn same footwear and walked with self-selected step and cadence along the test floors. The angle of inclination obtained for water wet condition using 5 l/min with HSL ramp test was compared to perception of slipperiness. The surface roughness ($R_z$) related very well both AHP (r=0.95) and ramp test (r=0.92). The high significant correlation (r=0.90) was found between AHP and HSL ramp test. The HSL ramp test values (Coefficient of Friction, COF) according to subjective evaluation were divided into two categories. There were high correlations between test results (subjective evaluation, HSL ramp test) and surface roughness in Rz. Perception rating obtained with AHP showed a high correlation with COF obtained with HSL ramp test.
While the reduction of industrial accidents has been stagnant, many researchers have been studying and focusing on safety behaviors including safety perception, attitude and safety culture as a new solution as well as a turning-point of this issue. However, we do not pay attention to those studies and researches in Korean construction. Therefore, this study is to introduce preceding researches and case studies in other countries and suggest a new direction to Korean construction. This study found out the current situation and problems in Korean construction studies after tracing the safety perception, attitude and safety culture in Korea and reviewing the background and trend of overseas studies and researches with regard to safety behaviors. Fundamental researches and systematic studies must be conducted in Korean construction with the reference and research data of this study.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze factors associated with depression among wage earners by subjective health and stress perception. Methods: The study subjects include 1,787 wage earners(aged 19 and older) who are currently working, using data from the 2014 National Health and Nutrition Survey. Data were analyzed using frequency test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that perceived stress level, subjective health status, age, monthly household income, sex, marital status, average daily sleeping time, and whether type of employment was regular or non-regular were significantly related to depression. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop an appropriate mental health promotion program and to manage prevention of depression at the national level.
Purpose: The 2015 Korean Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreaks resulted in 186 cases, with 8% (15 persons) of these being nurses. This study aimed to examine MERS-CoV infection status of clinical nurses and to evaluate perception for infection control. Methods: We investigated the MERS-CoV infection status of nurses using MERS-CoV press release data. We examined and analysed perception for Infection control of 121 nurses of the three MERS intensive therapeutic hospitals in July 2015. Results: One to six nurses per hospital in total 8 health care facilities were infected with MERS-CoV. They mainly had short clinical careers and were unaware of infection possibility. The personal and organizational infection control levels that nurses perceive were low and the relationship between two levels was statistically significant. Conclusion: For promoting health protection and infectious disease management competency of nurses, it is necessary to prepare institutional system for controlling infectious disease.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of foot bath therapy on post-operation pain, stress, HRV of hand replantation patients. Methods: Quasi-experimental study design and non-equivalent control group pre & post test repeated measure design were employed for this experiment. 47 subjects were selected for this study. 25 subjects of experimental group participated in foot bath program had foot bath 11 times for 2 weeks; 22 subjects of control group didn't have foot bath. Pain was digitized numerically by using Visual Analogue Scale, stress was measured by stress perception questionnaire, and HRV was measured by using Cnopy9 (IEMBIO). Results: The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 Win program. (1) The difference between experimental group and control group was shown statistically significant in aspect of pain (p<.05). (2) The difference between experimental group and control group was shown statistically significant in aspect of stress (p<.05). (3) The difference between experimental group and control group was not shown statistically significant in aspect of HRV (p>.05). Conclusion: Foot bath program was an effective intervention for pain loss and perception of stress reduction. But it wasn't effective for HRV.
The purpose of this study is to study of correlation of characteristcs of bio-medical ethics and self-esteem for undergraduate students and to compare bio-medical ethics perception between health science and non-health science undergraduate students. We investigated bio-medical ethics and self-esteem of 651 undergraduate students including health science students and non-health science students for two weeks in May, 2015. The results of this study showed significant correlation between self-esteem and bio-medical ethics. The higher self-esteem, the more important bio-medical ethics. But it showed no significant difference between two groups in bio-medical ethics about brain death, euthanasia except biotechnology.
Purpose: We investigated the relationship between patient safety culture and safety care activity, and identified factors for safety care activity of entry-level nurses. Methods: The subjects of the study were 204 entry-level nurses working at five general and advanced hospitals with over 500 beds located in C and D City. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: Perception of patient safety culture had significant correlations with safety care activity. Multiple regression analysis showed that demographic variables of quality of nursing on patient safety and health state of entry-level nurses affected safety care activity. In addition, patient safety culture in ward and communication affected safety care activity. These factors explained 38% of variance. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, patient safety culture promotion strategies to facilitate supportive work environment and effective communication are needed.
Purpose: This study examined the job stress and perception of unit managers' authentic leadership on clinical nurses' intention to stay in nursing. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study utilized self-administered questionnaires. The study recruited a convenience sample of 211 clinical nurses from threertiary hospitals in South Korea. The survey was conducted between July and August 2021. The collected data underwent hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: The regression analyses indicated that clinical nurses' intention to stay was significantly associated with job stress (B=-0.06, 95% CI [-0.09, -0.04]), six or more years of clinical practice (B=0.60, 95% CI [0.13, 1.07]), men (B=0.87, 95% CI [0.30, 1.44]), and being placed on their desired nursing unit (B=0.39, 95% CI [0.27, 0.76]). Intention to stay was not found to be associated with authentic leadership by the unit managers. Conclusion: It is essential to implement workplace health promotion programs to prevent and reduce job stress among nurses to retain proficient clinical nurses. Additionally, nursing workforce management strategies tailored to the specific sex and career path of nurses are necessary. Moreover, careful consideration should be given to nursing unit placements that align with the individual aptitudes of nurses.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness of occupational hazards and personal protective equipment use among dental hygienists (DHs). Methods: A total of 271 self-administered questionnaires were obtained from 280 DHs working at dental hospitals or clinics in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Results: The occupational hazards included work involving dust (94.1%), volatile substances (86.0%), noise (97.0%), and light-curing units (96.7%). The proportion of dental hygiene tasks that participants perceived as harmful were 42.4%, 51.7%, 9.2%, and 31.4% in the same order as above. The proportion of participants who used dust-proof masks during work involving dust was 1.1%. Those who wore gas-proof masks and gloves for work using volatile substances were 0.7% and 31.2%, respectively. Participants who used goggles for work involving light-curing units were 31.0%. None of the participants used ear plugs for work involving noise. A total of 22.9% of the participants recognized the Material Safety Data Sheet, while 79.7% had never been educated about harmful work environments. Conclusion: When compared to exposure status and perception of occupational hazards, the level of protective equipment use was very low. Extra measures to increase DHs' use of personal protective equipment are necessary.
