The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary compliance and related variables in NIDDM patients. One hundred and fourteen patients at two hospitals in Seoul were interviewed and height, body weight, family history and postprandial blood glucose were analyzed statistically along with the dietary practices. 1) When the degree of dietary compliance was expressed as Tunbridge score, 75% was grouped as satisfactory, 9.7% as Tolerable, and 14.9% belonged to Hopeless group. 2) Calorie intake of the subjects was lower then RDA. Carbohydrate, fat, and protein contributed each 60 : 22 :18. When SFA was used 1, the relative ratio of PUFA : MUFA : SFA was 0.8 : 1.2 : 1. 3) The mean score of knowledge test on diet therapy was 5.6$\pm$2.9 out of possible 12.0 points. 4) Age had significant positive correlation with duration of diabetes(p<0.001), and significant negative correlation with scores of knowledge test on diet therapy was observed(p<0.001). 5) The difference of actual and prescribed calorie intake had positive correlation with PP2 blood glucose level(p<0.05), and significant negative correlation with age(p<0.05). 6) Statiscally significant variables on the practice of diet therapy were the present body weight, protein and carbohydrate intake, age, and sex.
Benthic pollution assessment based on macrobenthic community structure with environmental variables was carried out at twelve stations during two periods on a presumed pollution gradient in Gamak Bay. Univariate and multivariate methods were applied to investigate structural changes in the benthic communities. A clear gradient of pollution effects on the macrobenthic community was observed from the interior to the exterior of the bay. The community on the northwestern basin was severely disturbed due to a low level of hydrodynamics and a large amount of pollutant input from nearby cities. Exterior regions on the southern basin appeared to have the best benthic environmental characteristics among all stations according to most methods of analysis. Central ridge regions and two stations around the islets in the mouth of the bay exhibited intermediate levels of perturbation when compared to the more disturbed interior and undisturbed exterior regions. Pollution effects on the communities were attenuated at the southern area of the central ridge during spring compared to those of summer, where aquacultural farming was densely distributed. The environmental variables primarily correlated to the macrobenthic community structure were total organic carbon (C), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and tributyltins (TBTs), contents found on the surface sediment, as anthropogenic variables indicating organic materials.
The purpose of this study was to find out the variables affecting the successful aging of the elderly. To achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted with 388 seniors living in the Jeonbuk area. The data were analyzed using multiple regressions and a path analysis. The major findings were as follows: First, statistically significantly different perception of successful aging was observed according to their marital status. Second, successful aging of the elderly with a spouse was influenced by personal variables, such as their own perception of economic status, gender, education level and physical condition. In contrast, successful aging of the elderly without a spouse was most influenced by social variables, such as family support. Third, the attitude towards aging directly affected successful aging. Various personal and social characteristics indirectly affected successful aging via attitudes towards aging according to the presence of a spouse.
Background: Pretreatment serum p53 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in patients with acute leukemia to analysis their roles in characterization of different subtypes of the disease. Materials and Methods: Serum samples from thirty two patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and fourteen patients with acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) were analysed, along with 24 from healthy individuals used as a control group. Results: The results demonstrated a significant increase of serum p53 and EGFR in patients with AML (p<0.0001) compared to the control group. Also, the results showed a significant increase of both markers in patients with ALL (p<0.05, p<0.0001 respectively). Sensitivities and specificities for these variables were 52% and 100% for p53, and 73.9%, 95.8% for EGFR. Serum p53 and EGFR could successfully differentiate between M4 and other AML subtypes, while these variables failed to discriminate among ALL subtypes. A positive significant correlation was noted between p53 and EGFR. Negative significant correlations were observed between these variables and both of hemoglobin (Hg) content and RBC count. Conclusions: Mutant p53 and EGFR are helpful serological markers for diagnosis of patients with AML or ALL and can aid in characterization of disease. Moreover, these markers may reflect carcinogenesis mechanisms.
This study aims to reveal the relationship between growth of young sea bass and environmental variables in two adjacent eelgrass beds. Fishes were collected from Gamak Bay (GB) and Yeoja Bay (YB) on the southern coast of Korea from February 2006 to February 2007 using a dragnet (15 m in length and 3 m in width). During the study period, a total of 367 individuals of young sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus were collected from GB (171 inds.) and YB (196 inds.). Significant differences were observed in the occurrence periods and growth patterns of young sea bass, as well as in environmental variables between GB and YB. Young sea bass were collected from April to December in GB, but from April to July in YB. These differences may be associated with differences in eelgrass density, leaf width, and zooplankton density between GB and YB.
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze coordination pattern of joints and segments during Dwichagi in Taekwondo and present a point of difference as compared with the previous study on Dolryeochagi in Taekwondo. By the utilization of three-dimensional cinematography, the angles of individual joints and segments of six male Taekwondo experts during Dwichagi were calculated by using Euler's angle. The used coordination variables were angle vs. angle plots between adjacent joints and segments and angle vs. angular velocity plots of individual joints and segments, respectively. It was observed during Dwichagi that in-phase coordination and spring-like rotational control mechanism of the lower and upper trunk were transferred into straight spring-like control mechanism of lower leg passing through flexion-extension and the fixation of degree-of-freedom of lower trunk and hip joint alternatively. This comparative study that coordination variables were used seems to be more useful research direction to deeply understand basic control mechanisms of Taekwondo kicking techniques when compared with the previous studies that defined Dwichagi as a thrust movement pattern merely based on biomechanical variables of a kicking leg.
This research aims at examining the relationships between mother-toddler interaction and its related variables. A total of 49 toddlers and their mothers were participated and observed in the child lab during free play. The main results of this study are as follows. First, among the mother-toddler interaction, 'involvement' was frequently used in comparison with the 'rejection' was the hardly used in their interaction. Second, the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, and the mother-toddler interaction had no significant difference by the mothers' job status or gender of toddlers. However, their parenting stress was lower in working mothers or mothers who have girls. Third, mother-toddler interaction was significantly correlated with the mothers' sensitivity, parenting stress, parenting style, and the temperament of toddlers. On the basis of this results, the implication related to the variables influencing mother-toddler interaction was discussed.

Fit of the restoration and its cementation procedure is crucial to both its short and long term prognosis. Marginal fit is affected by many variables during the fabrication process. These variables, being intrinsic properties of the materials or the clinical technique used, can cause changes in the size and shape of the definitive restoration. Even if all variables are controlled carefully, the seating of a restoration can still be affected due to insufficient space for the luting agent. The use of die spacer can reduce the elevation of a cast restoration of a prepared tooth, decreased seating time, improve the outflow of excess cement, and lower the seating forces. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal fidelity according to die spacer application times and measurement site. Casting alloys were prepared and fabricated using non-precious metal at $950^{\circ}C$. Specimens are divided into four groups: I(die spacer painted casting for wax pattern), II(die spacer non painted casting for wax pattern). The specimens were cut and polished for marginal gap observation. The marginal gap was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The plot design influences the budgets and the precision of forest inventory results. The objective of this study is to determine the efficiency of estimating forest variables such as tree density, basal area, volume, and species richness based on various plot sizes using fixed-area plot sampling in the natural deciduous forest of Pyeong-Chang County, Gang-won Province, Korea. In this study, 108 reference plots were established with a fixed plot size and shape of 0.09 ha ($30m{\times}30m$). In order to determine the optimal plot size for the interest of variables, each sample plot was established using different shapes (square, circle, and rectangle) and was divided into different plot sizes from 100 to $900m^2$. The mean relative difference (MRD) for the sum of the basal area and volume, and tree density per hectare decreased as plot size increased. But the MRD for three variables were only below 13% at the plot size of $500m^2$. Species richness for each reference stand observed ranging from 2 to 15 species, demonstrated highly positive significant relationships with plot size. The minimum plot size for the estimation of tree density, the sum of the BA and volume was determined to be about $400m^2$, whereas the estimation of species richness required a minimum plot size of $500m^2$.
Unlike a typical static seals, spring-energized static seals exhibit improvement in leak-tightness by reinforcing the spring inside the aluminum lining. Thus, spring-energized static seals are widely used in various industrial fields, such as aerospace, semiconductors, and petrochemical industries. The primary objective of this study is to develop design guidelines for spring-energized static seals in a wide range of temperatures, including that of cryogenic environments, by analyzing the required performance and influence of design variables through simulations. There are various parameters that can be controlled to design a leak-tight seal. In this study, the finite element analysis (FEA) is performed by controlling the parameters related to the spring and the thickness of the aluminum lining, and the result of the leakage between the seal and the casing is confirmed. Considering the influence of each parameters, all of them are found to be important. However, it is observed that the spring-related variables are more important than the aluminum lining or other variables when complexity is considered. We can identify the threshold value of spring stiffness that changes leak-tight performance of the seal by performing FEA. Simulation results, under the conditions that are considered in this study, show that spring stiffness should be at least 3.6 N/m to maintain leak-tightness caused by the sufficient contact force between the aluminum lining and the upper and lower casings.
