  • This study estimates and evaluates the extreme value of 30 m-resolution daily maximum and minimum temperatures over South Korea, using inverse distance weighting (IDW), parameter-elevation regression on independent slopes model (PRISM) and generalized extreme value (GEV) method. The three experiments are designed and performed to find the optimal estimation strategy to obtain extreme value. First experiment (EXP1) applies GEV firstly to automated surface observing system (ASOS) to estimate extreme value and then applies IDW to produce high-resolution extreme values. Second experiment (EXP2) is same as EXP1, but using PRISM to make the high-resolution extreme value instead of IDW. Third experiment (EXP3) firstly applies PRISM to ASOS to produce the high-resolution temperature field, and then applies GEV method to make high resolution extreme value data. By comparing these 3 experiments with extreme values obtained from observation data, we find that EXP3 shows the best performance to estimate extreme values of maximum and minimum temperatures, followed by EXP1 and EXP2. It is revealed that EXP1 and EXP2 have a limitation to estimate the extreme value at each grid point correctly because the extreme values of these experiments with 30 m-resolution are calculated from only 60 extreme values obtained from ASOS. On the other hand, the extreme value of EXP3 is similar to observation compared to others, since EXP3 produces 30m-resolution daily temperature through PRISM, and then applies GEV to that result at each grid point. This result indicates that the quality of statistically produced high-resolution extreme values which are estimated from observation data is different depending on the combination and procedure order of statistical methods.

  • The new course distances of a ship are considered to be the indices to indicate directly her abilities of course altercation. Generally, they have long been calculated by using the maneuvering indices obtained from her Z test. However, at sea actually the maneuvering indices can not sometimes be obtained according to ship's condition or circumstances and the new course distances can not be calculated. To find out other method to calculate the new course distances, in this paper the author analyzed them from a viewpoint of ship motion, and worked out a numerical formula to calculate them easily, using the data of ship's heading test. In order to check whether the presented method is applicable to actual ships or not, the experiment by them were also performed. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1. The mean difference of the distance between two new course distances by the heading test and the maneuvering indices of the experimental ship was about 0.98% values of the ones by the maneuvering indices, when her heading were 10。, 20。 and 30。, using the rudder angle of 15。. These new course distances were therefore found to be almost same in values of the distance. 2. The mean difference of the distance between two new course distances by the heading test and the observation of experimental ship was about 1.16% values of the ones by the observation, when her headings were 10。, 20。 and 30。, using the rudder angle of 15。. These new course distances were therefore found to be almost same in values of the distance. 3. It is confirmed that the new course distances can be calculated easily by using the method of ship's simple heading test, without the observation or using the maneuvering indices. 4. It is considered to be helpful for the safety of shiphanding to draw curves of new course distances by ship's heading test and utilize them at sea.

  • Although the rainstorm causes local damage on large scale, it is difficult to predict the movement of the rainstorm exactly. In order to reduce the rainstorm damage of the rainstorm, it is necessary to analyze the path of the rainstorm using various statistical methods. In addition, efficient time interval of rainfall observation for the analysis of the rainstorm movement can be derived by applying various statistical methods to rainfall data. In this study, the rainstorm tracking using statistical method is performed for various types of rainfall data. For the tracking of the rainstorm, the methods of temporal distribution, inclined Plane equations, and cross correlation were applied for various types of data including electromagnetic rainfall gauge data and AWS data. The speed and direction of each method were compared with those of real rainfall movement. In addition, the effective time interval of rainfall observation for the analysis of the rainstorm movement was also investigated for the selected time intervals 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes. As a result, the absolute relative errors of the method of inclined plane equations are smaller than those of other methods in case of electromagnetic rainfall gauges data. The absolute relative errors of the method of cross correlation are smaller than those of other methods in case of AWS data. The absolute relative errors of 30 minutes or less than 30 minutes are smaller than those of other time intervals.

  • We present a robust localization algorithm using particle filter for mobile robots in a dynamic environment. It is difficult to describe moving obstacles like people or other robots on the map and the environment is changed after mapping. A mobile robot cannot estimate its pose robustly with this incomplete map because sensor observations are corrupted by un-modeled obstacles. The proposed algorithms provide robustness in such a dynamic environment by suppressing the effect of corrupted sensor observations with a selective update or a sampling from non-corrupted window. A selective update method makes some particles keep track of the robot, not affected by the corrupted observation. In a sampling from non-corrupted window method, particles are always sampled from several particle sets which use only non-corrupted observation. The robustness of proposed algorithm is validated with experiments and simulations.

  • Speech signal is distorted by channel characteristics or additive noise and then the performances of speaker or speech recognition are severely degraded. To cope with the noise problem, we propose a modified HMM decoder algorithm using SNR-based observation confidence, which was successfully applied for GMM in speaker identification task. The modification is done by weighting observation probabilities with reliability values obtained from SNR. Also, we apply PSO (particle swarm optimization) method to the confidence function for maximizing the speaker identification performance. To evaluate our proposed method, we used the ETRI database for speaker recognition. The experimental results showed that the performance was definitely enhanced with the modified HMM decoder algorithm.

  • A new method is developed to estimate the evaporation of water from a surface with high accuracy and resolution. The principle of new method is to detect a weight change of buoyant weight according to a change in water level of Class A Pan mesured by the use of a strain-gauge load cell. Field test of evaporation recording new instrument was carried out at Suwon for 10 days July 1999. It is possible in field observation to measure hourly evaporation amount by newly developed evaporation recording instrument in Class A Pan against strong solar radiation. Present study provide a possibility of domestic high accuracy instrument development below than 0.1mm water level measurement accuracy. If there is low humidity and high wind speed conditions which is possible to evaporate from water surface during night time. And it needs continuous study to understand between meteorological elements and latent heat effect at ground level by field observation study using high accuracy evaporation recording instrument.

  • In order to design a stable robust controller, nominal model, and the upper bound about the uncertainty which is the error of the model are needed. The problem to estimate the nominal model of controlled system and the upper bound of uncertainty at the same time is called robust identification. When the nominal model of controlled system and the upper bound of uncertainty in relation to robust identification are given, the evaluation of the validity of the model and the upper bound makes it possible to distinguish whether there is a model which explains observation data including disturbance among the model set. This paper suggests a method to identity the uncertainty which removes disturbance and expounds observation data by giving a probable postulation and plural data set to disturbance. It also examines the suggested method through a numerical computation simulation and validates its effectiveness.

  • In this paper, we propse an object-oriented coding method in low bit-rate channels using pyramid structure and residual image compensation. In the motion estimation step, global motion is estimated using a set of multiresolution images constructed in a pyramid structure. We split an input image into two regions based on the gradient value. Regions with larte motions obtain observation points at low resolution level to guarantee robustness to noise and to satisfy a motion constraint equation whereas regions with local motions such as eye, and lips get observation points at the original resolution level. Local motion variations and intesity variations of an image reconstructed by the golbal motion are compensated additionally by using the previous residual image component. Finally, the model failure (MF) region is compensated by the pyramid mapping of the previous displaced frame difference (DFD). Computer simulation results show that the proposed method gives better performance that the convnetional one in terms of the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), compression ratio (CR), and computational complexity.
