In order to determine the efficacy of functional foods, objective measurement of the severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) after taking foods is important. The aim of this study was to conduct an objective evaluation of whether Korean red ginseng (KRG) might be helpful for improvement of skin condition and serum IgE in patients with AD. Thirty atopic patients (18 females and 12 males) participated in this study. Patients took KRG for 16 weeks. Bioengineering methods, including the corneometer and evaporimeter, were used at the start of the study and after 8 weeks and 16 weeks. In addition, we assessed serum IgE levels and the severity scoring of the atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Transepidermal water loss and skin hydration showed significant improvement after 16 weeks. A significant decrease in the SCORAD index, as well as in serum IgE level, was observed after 16 weeks. Our results demonstrated that KRG may be helpful as a functional food for patients with AD.

패혈증이 동반된 아토피피부염 환자를 19일간의 입원치료기간동안 한약치료와 항생제치료를 병행하여 치료하였다. 향후 적절한 감염 관리가 동반된다면, 2차 감염이 병발된 아토피피부염을 적극적으로 치료할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Objective : This case report aims to show the effect of Osuyu-tang on an atopic dermatitis. The patient was diagnosed with Yangmyung-byung based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Yanamyung-byung and has been unusual dietary habits. So she took Osuyu-tang decoction for 2 weeks. We evaluated the results of treatment by SCORAD Index and before and after treatment photos. Results : After taking Osuyu-tang decoction for 2weeks, the patient's SCORAD INDEX and symptoms was decreased from 49.5(severe) to 3.5(mile). Also, the patient's chronic diagestive disorder improved. Conclusions : This case report showed an effectiveness of using Osuyu-tang according to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions on atopic dermatitis.

Objective : This case report presents the effect of Hoiyeok-tang on atopic dermatitis. A patient was diagnosed with Lesser Yin disease based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to the disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS), we diagnosed the patient with Lesser Yin disease. The patient was treated with Hoiyeok-tang for 87 days. The changes in symptoms were estimated by the SCORAD index. Results : After treatment, the SCORAD Index improved from 57.3 to 33.5. The patient also body weight from 89.1 kg to 76.5 kg. Conclusions : This case study shows the effectiveness of Hoiyeok-tang on atopic Dermatitis according to DPIDS.

Objective : This study reports the effect of Kyejiinsam-tang on Atopic Dermatitis. Methods : This is a case report on a patient who has been suffering from Atopic Dermatitis. According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, Kyejiinsam-tang was provided for 250 days. The severity of Atopic Dermatitis was evaluated by SCORAD index and pictures. Results : When analyzing the patient's history and symptoms, it can be found in article No. 163 in Shanghanlun. The area and intensity of Atopic Dermatitis were reduced when viewed photos findings, and SCORAD index decreased 58.1 to 7.1. So diagnosis and therapies showed valid results in Atopic Dermatitis. Conclusions : Kyejiinsam-tang is efficient to patient of this case report as a treatment.

Objective : The objective of this study is to report a case of atopic dermatitis (AD) treated with Hoeyeok-tang. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the course of herbal medicine treatment in a 20-year-old male patient with a topic dermatitis. Changes in main symptoms were confirmed based on the gross findings and assessed using SCORing Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD) Index. Accompanying symptoms and side effects that can be referred to for diagnosis were analyzed By referring to the clinical records. Results : According to the Shanghanlun provision, the patient's AD was diagnosed with Terminal-yin Gwakran 389^th provision. The patient was treated with Hoeyeok-tang for 90 days. The severity of pruritus decreased, and SCORAD Index was decreased from 44.6 to 8.4. VAS for eye fatigue and nausea was decreased from 10 to 5, also. No particular side effects occurred to the patient while taking the Hoeyeok-tang. Conclusions : The result suggests the clinical applicability of 389^th provision of Shanghanlun.

Objectives : The objective of this study is to report a case of a male atopic dermatitis patient accompanying seborrheic capitis and nummular eczema improved by Korean medicine therapy and lifestyle modification. Methods : A male patient was hospitalized for eczematous lesions in the head, face, and both hands which relapsed on March 2021. For 15 days, he took Korean medicine therapy including acupuncture, Bangpungtongseongsan-gagam, pharmacopuncture, and wet dressing with Hwangryunhaedok-tang. Simultaneously, lifestyle correction also conducted during administration. On the other hand, corticosteroid and antihistamine were prescribed from internal medicine of our hospital for the first 10 days because of severe skin lesions. As an outpatient, he was continuously treated by the same Korean medicine therapy except herbal decoction weekly for about 7 months after discharge. To assess symptoms, scoring atopic dermatitis(SCORAD) index, taking photos, and numerical rating scale(NRS) were used. Results : After 15 days of hospitalization, the SCORAD index decreased to 30.0, which was about a half of the initial SCORAD index(61.2). NRS score also dropped from 6 to 3. Despite stopping western medicine administration, skin lesions and subjective symptoms of the patient were steadily improved without aggravation. For 7 months of continued outpatient treatment, atopic dermatitis were steadily ameliorated despite temporary aggravation and improvement of symptoms, and seborrheic capitis was not relapsed. The final SCORAD index and NRS on November 9th, 2021 were 24.7 and 1, respectively. Conclusions : These results suggests that Korean medicine therapy contributes to improving SCORAD index, subjective symptoms, and skin lesions of the patient. Furthermore, lifestyle modification is also important as much as proper treatment for caring atopic dermatitis patients.

Objectives : This study was aimed to evaluate the correlation between changes in disease severity and serum total IgE or eosinophil count in individual patients of atopic dermatitis depending on the change of severity. Methods : We performed a retrospective chart review of 8 cases of atopic dermatitis who underwent blood tests more than five times. Disease severity was assessed by objective SCORing of Atopic Dermatitis index (OSI). Blood tests include serum total IgE, eosinophil counts, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr). In each subject, on the day that the blood test was performed, OSI was also assesed by a same physician. Correlation between OSI and total IgE or eosinophil count was analysed by nonparametric correlation analysis. Results : There was a statistically significant positive correlation between OSI and total IgE in three cases and a positive correlation between OSI and eosinophil count in two cases. In other three cases, there were no significant correlation. There were no cases that OSI correlated with total IgE and eosinophil count at the same time. In all cases, AST, ALT, BUN and SCr were stable. Conclusions : We suggest that total IgE and eosinophil count may reflect the severity of atopic dermatitis differently in individual patients. We also suggest that total IgE and eosinophil counts may be used as biomarkers to predict the severity of atopic dermatitis in some patients depending on the underlying pathology.

Background : Many doctors are under a bias toward clinical severity in patients with atopic dermatitis. But the various studios show that atopic dermatitis may produce a range of impacts on the qualify of lift . Nevertheless there is much to be desired about the association between the quality of lift and atopic dermatitis in the department of Dermatology in Korean medicine. Objective : This study was conducted to investigate the impact of the atopic dermatitis on quality of life and explore prognostic factors that influence outcomes. Methods : 70 patients were recruited in this study rho write out more than 90% of Skindex-29 questionnaires. The function of total scores and three domain scores and SCORAD index was investigated and the correlation of each domain scores also . Result : The total scores, showed significant correlation with three domain scores in atopic dermatitis. The correlation of each three domain scores were significant. SCORAD index showed significant correlation with three domain scores and total scores. Conclusion : In this study atopic dermatitis efface of the quality of life in physical, social, and psychological factors. So we considered to the quality of life as well as clinical severity in patient with atopic dermatitis.

Background : Recently the number of atopic dermatitis patients has increased, but the treatment of atopic dermatitis is not effective, and the recurrence rate of atopic dermatitis is high. Many patients are suffering from pruritus. A new standard treatment system is needed. Objective : This study investigated the effect of Oriental medicine program for atopic dermatitis patients during short term hospitalization. Method : 6 patients were admitted for short term hospitalization program. The program includes Acupuncture, herbal medicine, examination, education, cupping therapy, herbal dressing, exercise and etc. Everyday we evaluated the patients by Severity Scoring Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD) index and took the photos of lesions, and the patients evaluated themselves by atopic dermatitis diary which consists of emotion, pruritus, sleep loss. Results : Admission duration was 7 to 14 days. The SCORAD scores of them were decreased. Most symptoms of 6 patients were improved. Especially herbal dressing was effective for severe oozing. Subjective scores of atopic dermatitis diary were reduced. Conclusion : We expect that the short term hospitalization program could be helpful for uncontrollable atopic dermatitis patients.
