  • A new approach to process optimal design in non-isothermal, non-steady state metal forming is presented. In this approach, the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of the integrated thermo-mechanical finite element process model so as to cover a wide range of the objective functions and design variables, and the derivative based approach is adopted for conducting optimization by design iteration. The process model, the formulation for process optimal design, and the procedures for the evaluation of the design sensitivity and for design iteration for optimization are described.

  • Since the oil crisis in 1970, a great deal of effort has been made to develop automatic electric load sharing systems as a part of the efforts to save energy. A large scale electric generating system composes more than two generators whose characteristics may be different. When such a system is operated individually or in parallel, the lagrange multiplier's method has difficulty in achieving optimal load distribution because generators usually have the limitations of the operating range with inequality constraints. Therefore, a suitable operating mode of generators has to be decided according to the selection of the generators to meet electric power requirements at the minimum cost. In this study, a method which solves the optimal electric load distribution problem using the dynamic programming technique is proposed. This study also shows that the dynamic programming method has an advantage in dealing with the optimal load distribution problem under the limitations of the operating range with inequality constraints including generator operation mode. In this study, generator operating cost curve of second order equation by shop trial test results of diesel generators are used. The results indicate that the proposed method can be applied to the ship's electric generating system.

  • Vitamin C plays an important role for fish survival, growth and disease resistance. However, the optimal vitamin C for rearing red drum Sciaenops ocellatus juveniles in Vietnam is not known. To address this issue, a 70-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the optimal dietary vitamin C requirements for red drum juveniles. Seven isonitrogenous (55.35% protein) and isolipidic (9.07% lipid) diets were formulated to include graded vitamin C concentrations of 23.2, 124.5, 235.2, 423.8, 626.7, 824.6, and 1,027.3 mg/kg, respectively. The results showed that fish fed on 423.8 mg/kg vitamin C diet had the highest growth rate, which can be linked to the increased feed utilization. Broken-line analysis indicated that the optimal dietary vitamin C requirements of red drum juveniles were 342.92 and 405.80 mg/kg for growth parameters, feed utilization, body composition and biochemical parameters of serum. Based on these parameters the optimal vitamin C supplementation level for red drum juveniles was estimated in the range of 342.92-405.80 mg/kg vitamin C in the diets with direct applications in producing artificial feed for rearing juveniles of this species in Vietnam.

  • The objective of this study is to find the optimal control algorithm of a hybrid Plant, which is combined by renewable energy plant of the GSHP(Geothermal Source Heat Pump) and the normal plant (Chiller, boiler). The work presented in this study was carried out in the EnergyPlus(Version 2.0). The EnergyPlus was modified in order to simulate the hybrid plant. The plant system was controlled by the load-range-based operation in which schemes select a user specified set of equipment for each user specified range of a particular simulation condition. In the use of the load-range-based operation, four kind of control cases were defined and simulated in order to obtain the optimal control algorithm of the hybrid plant. The result showed that the Case 2 was the optimal control algorithm which used the GSHP as a base operating plant and the normal plant as an assistant operating plant. Even though the normal plant was operated in full load and the renewable energy plant of the GSHP was operated in partial load, the annual energy consumption of the normal plant was larger than that of the GSHP plant.

  • This study was conducted to design an impedance sensor that can measure soil water content of soils. Partial least square regression (PLSR) was applied to soil impedance data preprocessed with a smoothing method. An optimal sub-spectrum size and wavelength range were determined by comparing the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) of the PLSR models obtained using soil impedance data. various PLS analysis. Based on the PLSR analysis, it would be concluded that the optimal spectrum measurement range was $32.0{\sim}50.0\;MHz$ with the optimal sub-spectrum size of about 18.5 MHz.

  • There is a delicate balance between too little and too much supplemental oxygen exposure in premature infants. Since underuse and overuse of supplemental oxygen can harm premature infants, oxygen saturation levels must be monitored and kept at less than 95% to prevent reactive oxygen species-related diseases, such as retinopathy of prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. At the same time, desaturation below 80 to 85% must be avoided to prevent adverse consequences, such as cerebral palsy. It is still unclear what range of oxygen saturation is appropriate for premature infants; however, until the results of further studies are available, a reasonable target for pulse oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) is 90 to 93% with an intermittent review of the correlation between $SpO_2$ and the partial pressure of arterial oxygen tension ($PaO_2$). Because optimal oxygenation depends on individuals at the bedside making ongoing adjustments, each unit must define an optimal target range and set alarm limits according to their own equipment or conditions. All staff must be aware of these values and adjust the concentration of supplemental oxygen frequently.

  • Probabilistic approaches are applied to the problem of groundwater remediation design to consider the risk of design and heterogeneity of real condition. Hydraulic conductivity fields are generated by two methods. First, the homogeneous domains which have the hydraulic conductivity with log-normal distribution are constructed by using Latin Hypercube method. Second, random fields with a certain spatial correlation are also generated. The optimal solutions represented by cumulative distribution function (CDF) of relative cost are calculated by three different manners. The one uses the homogeneous domains with the optimal design of base condition. It shows that ver)'wide range of cost and the influences of different penalty values. The other one uses the random field with same design and shows narrow range of cost. These CDF can reflect on the risk of optimal solution in a simple exampie condition and be effective in estimating the cost of groundwater remediation.
