  • We demonstrated organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on the organic thin-film materials such as tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum $(Alq_3)$. The structure of OLEDs was vacuum deposited upon transparent and thin glass substrates pre-coated with a transparent, conducting indium tin oxide thin film. The luminance characteristics, current, capacitance, and dispersion factor for degraded OLEDs, which were made by various bias currents $(0.5mA\;{\leq}\;I_{Bias}\;{\leq}9mA)$, are studied. The current dependences of lifetime were divided at approximately 2mA, and they represented nearly linear behaviors but had different slopes in a logarithmic plot of lifetime versus bias current. With lighting OLEDs, the anomaly of capacitance, as shown in the CV curve, occurred because of two factors, polarization in the bulk of organic materials and the interface between the metal and organic layers. In decayed OLEDs that had lower bias currents of less than 2mA, it was found that the degradation of luminance was related to both the decrease of polarization and to the lowering of the injection barrier.

  • A new pixel circuit for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLEDs), based on the polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (Poly-Si TFTs), was proposed and verified by SMART SPICE simulation. One driving and six switching TFTs and one storage capacitor were used to improve display image uniformity without any additional control signal line. The proposed pixel circuit compensates an inevitable threshold voltage variation of Poly-Si TFTs and also compensates the degradation of OLED at low power supply voltage($V_{DD}$). The simulation results show that the proposed pixel circuit successfully compensates the variation of OLED driving current within 0.8% compared with 20% of the conventional pixel circuit.

  • The quality of the display can be managed by effectively managing the temperature generated by the panel during use. Conventional display panels rely on an external reference resistor for temperature monitoring. However, this approach is easily affected by external factors such as temperature variations from the driving circuit and chips. These variations reduce reliability, causing complicated mounting owing to the external chip, and cannot monitor the individual pixel temperatures. However, this issue can be simply and efficiently addressed by integrating temperature sensors during the display panel manufacturing process. In this study, we fabricated and analyzed a temperature sensor integrated into an a-IGZO (amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide) TFT array that was to precisely monitor temperature and prevent the deterioration of OLED display pixels. The temperature sensor was positioned on top of the oxide TFT. Simultaneously, it worked as a light shield layer, contributing to the reliability of the oxide. The characteristics of the array with integrated temperature sensors were measured and analyzed while adjusting the temperature in real-time. By integrating a temperature sensor into the TFT array, monitoring the temperature of the display became easier and more accurate. This study could contribute to managing the lifetime of the display.

  • Highly stable thin-film transistor (TFT) pixel employing both low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) and amorphous silicon (a-Si) for active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) is discussed. ELA (excimer laser annealing) LTPS-TFT pixel should compensate $I_{OLED}$ variation caused by the non-uniformity of LTPS-TFT due to the fluctuation of excimer laser energy and amorphous silicon TFT pixel is desired to suppress the decrease of $I_{OLED}$ induced by the degradation of a-Si TFT. We discuss various compensation schemes of both LTPS and a-Si TFT employing the voltage and the current programming.

  • A new current-programmed pixel circuit for activematrix organic light emitting diodes (AMOLEDs), based on Organic TFTs (OTFTs), is proposed and verified by SPICE simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed pixel circuit, which is a current mirror structure consisting of five Organic TFTs and one capacitor, has reliable linear characteristics between input current and output OLED current. Also, the threshold voltage degradation of Organic TFTs due to long time operation stress is well compensated to reliable values.

  • We introduce a lifetime assessment technique using deep learning algorithm with complex electrical parameters such as resistivity, permittivity, impedance parameters as integrated indicators for predicting the degradation of the organic molecules. The evaluation system consists of fully automated in-situ measurement system and multiple layer perceptron learning system with five hidden layers and 1011 perceptra in each layer. Prediction accuracies are calculated and compared depending on the physical feature, learning hyperparameters. 62.5% of full time-series data are used for training and its prediction accuracy is estimated as r-square value of 0.99. Remaining 37.5% of the data are used for testing with prediction accuracy of 0.95. With k-fold cross-validation, the stability to the instantaneous changes in the measured data is also improved.

  • Amorphous IZO films were deposited on PET substrate by DC magnetron sputtering without substrate heating. In order to investigate effect of reactive gas addition on film properties, 0.2-0.4% of $H_2$ or $O_2$ gas was introduced during the deposition. Deposited IZO films were evaluated with mechanical property, electrical property, and water permeability. In the case of $H_2$ gas addition, mechanical property showed clear degradation compared to $O_2$ gas. In the case of $O_2$ gas, water permeability of the IZO film was increased compared to $H_2$ gas which could be attributed to the low adhesion of the film caused by bombardment of high energy negative oxygen ion. As a result, it is confirmed that water permeability of the film could be strongly affected by adhesion of the film.

  • A new voltage-driven pixel circuit using soluble-processed organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) for an active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) is proposed. The proposed circuit is composed of four switching TFTs, one driving TFT and one storage capacitor. The proposed circuit can compensate for the degradation of OLED current caused by the threshold voltage shift of the OTFT. The simulation results show that the variation of OLED current corresponding to a 3V threshold voltage shift is decreased by 30% compared to the conventional 2TlC structure.

  • In this paper, we propose the histogram matching-based power reduction technique considering the perceptual image quality. The conventional methods cannot analyze the clipping error of an image, and hence, they significantly degrade the image quality when pixels with the clipping error are concentrated on small area. The proposed method generates histograms for various images with different characteristics, and it calculates and stores the optimal clipping rate in a database. Then, it compares the histograms with that of an input image, and selects the histogram and clipping rate with the minimum difference to prevent the image quality degradation. In the experimental results, the proposed method improved the average PSNR and SSIM by up to 15.795 dB and 0.036, compared with the conventional methods.
