  • Information collection systems and applications in a ubiquitous environment has emerged as a leading issue in transportation and logistics. A productive application example is a traffic information collection system based on probe vehicles and wireless communication technology. Estimation of hourly OD pairs using probe OD data is a possible target. Since probe OD data consists of sample OD pairs, which vary over time and space, computation of sample rates of OD pairs and expansion of sample OD pairs into static OD pairs is required. In this paper, the authors proposed a method to estimate sample OD data with probe data in Jeju City and expand those into static OD data. Mean absolute percentage difference (MAPD) error between observed traffic volume and assigned traffic volume was about 22.9%. After removing abnormal data, MAPD error improved to 17.6%. Development of static OD estimation methods using probe vehicle data in a real environment is considered the main contribution of this paper.

  • To develop a safer cosmetic preservative, we carried out a comparative study on characteristics of OD and OD-gal, where OD-gal was synthesized from OD using E. coli β-gal. OD-gal synthesis was confirmed by mass spectrometry analysis as sodium adduct ion (m/z=331.1731) and protonated ion (m/z=309.1926) of OD-gal. To compare the antimicrobial activities of OD and newly synthesized OD-gal, MIC values were investigated using E. coli, S. aureus, C. albicans, and A. niger. As a result, it was observed that there was no remarkable difference between MIC values of OD and OD-gal. In addition, to compare the cytotoxicity of OD-gal and OD, HaCaT cells were treated with OD or OD-gal, and then cell viability was quantified using EZ-Cytox assay. In the case of 1.5% OD, the cell viability was 64% at 24 h and 42% at 48 h compared to the control, and cell viability of 1.5% OD-gal-treated cells showed no significant change at 24 h and was 85% at 48 h. Consequently, the cytotoxicity of OD-gal-treated cells was reduced by more than 40% when compared with that of OD-treated cells. Thus, the newly synthesized OD-gal in this study is safer than the existing OD used as a cosmetic additive. In the future, OD-gal will be applicable as a substitute for OD as a less toxic preservative for the cosmetic industry.

  • Based on time dependent location data of mobile phone users, users' ODs were produced after tracing their travel route and inducing their origins and destinations. System considered average signalizing frequency, which means that the longer the travel length is the more frequent the signal is. This is a home-based OD and is limited to the Seoul Metropolitan area. The OD matrix from the mobile phone data which was aggregated to the cell and transformed to the 'Dong' area, was compared to the KTDB OD. The results can be analyzed and it was determined that they are highly correlated because individual coefficients are 0.98 and 0.85, the former between the OD of this study and the KTDB Si/Gun/Gu unit area OD and the latter between the OD of this study and the Dong unit area KTDB OD.

  • 1, 2-Octanediol (OD) as a cosmetic additive has been used simultaneously as a preservative and humectant. To solve the skin problem by 1, 2-octanediol (OD), we have synthesized 1, 2-octanediol galactoside (OD-gal) using Escherichia coli β-galactosidase (β-gal). Meanwhile, the optimal amount of β-gal, OD concentration, pH, and temperature for OD-gal synthesis were 4.5 U/ml, 150 mM, 7.0, and 37℃, respectively. Under these conditions, 150 mM OD was converted into about 55.9 mM OD-gal during 24 hours, in which the conversion yield (mole basis) was about 37.2%. In addition, OD-gal of 67.4 mg could be purified from a 9 ml reaction mixture, in which the overall synthesis yield from OD to the purified OD-gal was about 34.1% (weight basis) and 16.2% (mole basis), respectively. We are expecting that these results will be helpful to develop a safer additive in the cosmetic industry as basic data.

  • In order to properly evaluate ITS services exposed in SMART Highway project, a confident dynamic origin-destination (OD) is inevitably needed. This paper used WAVE communication information as a part of call and response (C&R) communication which constitutes core part of the technology for constructing OD. This information includes node information and vehicle information (e.g., latitude and longitude) as well as trajectory data and sample path volume date calculated using node information and vehicle information. A procedure developed to construct a dynamic OD and to validate OD is consist of 1) making toy network and one-hour 00 (random distribution), 2) collecting link information and vehicle information, 3) constructing five-minute OD, and 4) validating estimated OD result using traffic volume and travel time simultaneously. The constructed OD is about 84.79% correct within less than 20% error range for 15min traffic volume, and about 85.42%, within less than 20% error rate of 15 min travel time. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.

  • Background and Objectives: Dizzy patients with abnormal otolith function tests, despite a normal caloric response, are defined as having specific (isolated) otolith organ dysfunction. This study was performed to compare the differences in clinical presentation between isolated otolith dysfunction (iOD) patients with lab- and Sx-based iOD group and lab-based iOD symptoms. Subjects and Methods: The medical records of 23 iOD patients with normal caloric response but abnormal cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), ocular VEMP, or subjective visual vertical were reviewed. Non-spinning vertigo was considered as otolith-related symptoms. The patients' age, onset of dizziness, Numeric Rating Scale on the severity of dizziness, and concomitant vestibular disorders were analyzed. Results: Patients in the lab-based iOD group were significantly older than those in the lab- and Sx-based iOD group. Known vestibular disorders were significantly more common in the lab-based iOD group (83.3%) compared to the lab- and Sx-based iOD group (18.2%). Despite the normal caloric response, catch-up saccade was found in the video head impulse test in more than half (54.5%) of the lab-based iOD group patients. There was no catch-up saccade in the lab- and Sx-based iOD group. There were no significant differences in gender ratio, frequency of dizziness attacks, and duration of illness. Conclusions: We propose new definitions of definite iOD (lab- and Sx-based iOD) and probable iOD (lab- or Sx-based iOD). These new definitions may help researchers to identify patients who are more likely to have true iOD, and facilitate comparisons of results between different studies.

  • Objectives: The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the anti-neoplastic and anti-inflammatory effects of single and mixed extracts of Ulmus davidiana (UD) and Oldenlandia diffusa (OD) on azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate (AOM/DSS)-induced colonic neoplasms in mice. Methods: AOM/DSS induces colitis-associated colonic neoplasms in mice. Mice were divided into seven groups: normal-no inducement and no treatment; control-colonic neoplasms with no treatment; UD-colonic neoplasms and treatment with UD; OD-colonic neoplasms and treatment with OD; UD1+OD1-colonic neoplasms and treatment with UD1 and OD1. UD1+OD2-colonic neoplasms and treatment with UD1 and OD2; UD2+OD1-colonic neoplasms and treatment with UD2 and OD1. Single and mixed preparations of UD and OD were applied to mice for six weeks. The colon length and weight and histopathologic changes of colon tissue were observed. Serum pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha ($TNF-{\alpha}$) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The mRNA expression levels of Bax, Bcl-2, and interferon-gamma ($INF-{\gamma}$) were measured by RT-PCR. Results: The colon length was significantly increased in OD, UD1+OD2, and UD2+OD1 mice, and the colon weight was significantly decreased in OD and UD1+OD2 mice. The morphological change of colon epithelial cells was more suppressed in complex-treatment groups than in single-treatment groups. The inhibitory effect on inflammatory cell invasion was especially shown in UD1+OD2 mice. The serum level of the pro-inflammatory $TNF-{\alpha}$ was decreased in all complex-treatment groups, and the IL-6 level was decreased in UD1+OD1 mice. Single-treatment groups had an increase in the mRNA expression of the pro-apoptosis regulator Bax, and UD2+OD1 decreased the mRNA expression of the anti-apoptosis regulator Bcl-2. The mRNA expression of $INF-{\gamma}$ associated with inflammation was decreased in OD and UD1+OD2 mice. Conclusions: This study suggests that single and mixed extracts of Ulmus davidiana and Oldenlandia diffusa have anti-neoplastic and anti-inflammatory effects on AOM/DSS-induced colonic neoplasms in mice. Therefore, we conclude that UD, OD, and a mixture of UD and OD are potential therapeutic agents for colitis-associated colonic neoplasms.

  • Oldenlandia diffusa (OD), a member of the Rubiaceae family, has been used for treating inflammatory and infectious diseases. However, the anti-atopic effects of OD are not completely understood yet. Thus, the aim of the present study was to elucidate beneficial effects of OD on atopic dermatitis (AD) in vivo. We examined the pharmacological effects of OD on compound 48/80- or histamine-induced scratching behaviors and 2, 4-dinitrochlrobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD-like skin lesions in mice. Additionally, we evaluated regulatory effects of OD on the expression of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in DNCB-induced AD-like skin lesions. Results showed that OD inhibited the scratching behavior and AD symptoms. It also decreased serum levels of IgE and histamine in mice. Moreover, OD significantly ameliorated the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α in AD-like skin lesion. These finding suggest experimental evidence of that OD's potential for treating AD.

  • This study presents the orbit determination (OD) of a candidate Korea Regional Navigation Satellite System (KRNSS) using both inter-satellite links (ISLs) and ground observations. The candidate constellation of KRNSS is first introduced. The OD algorithm based on both ISL and ground observation is developed, and consists of three main components: dynamic model for Korean navigation satellites, measurement model for ISLs and ground observations, and the batch least-square filter for estimating OD parameters. As numerical simulations are performed to analyze the OD performances, the present study focuses on investigating the effects of ISL measurements on the OD accuracy of KRNSS. Simulation results show that the use of ISLs can considerably enhance the OD accuracy to one meter (design preference) under certain distributions of ground stations.
