  • Water motion is one of the main drivers in morphological variability in species within de order Laminariales, and most of our current knowledge is based on subtidal populations. $Eisenia$ $arborea$ is a dominant kelp species in the North Pacific, widely distributed along the Baja California Peninsula from mid intertidal down to subtidal areas. This species presents great variability in the intertidal zone but it has not been yet evaluated such variability according to wave exposure. The present work also identifies the spatial / temporal variation, particularly respect to the presence of stipes without medulla (hollow stipes) a feature common among other brown seaweeds. We evaluated the effects of wave action in morphological variation of intertidal $Eisenia$ $arborea$ (Laminariales, Ochrophyta) at Punta Eugenia. The spatial and temporal variation sampling was surveyed between February, May, July, and August 2004 in the intertidal of Punta Eugenia, Baja California Sur. Our results have shown that exposed sites correlate with increased length and width of stipes as compared to more protected sites. Hollow stipes frequency changed more in association with temporal variation than with spatial heterogeneity suggesting nutrient limitation for thalli development. Our results suggest that $Eisenia$ $arborea$ compensate by morphological modifications the stress of living in the intertidal zone by showing larger stipes. Hollow stipes might be are also a mechanical adaptation to increase survival in high energy environments.

  • A time-series sediment trap was operated at a water depth of 4950 m from July 2003 to May 2004 at KOMO station ($10^{\circ}30^{\prime}N$, $131^{\circ}20^{\prime}W$) in the northeastern equatorial Pacific, with the aim of understanding the temporal variation of planktonic foraminifera assemblages in response to the seasonal shift of Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). A total of 22130 planktonic foraminifera specimens belonging to 30 species and 11 genera were identified, which shows a distinct seasonal variation with high values (125~288 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the winter to spring (December-May) and low values (16~23 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the fall (September-November). In addition, seasonal ecological differences of foraminifera assemblages are distinctly recognizable: omnivorous foraminifera occurred predominantly during the summer season, whereas herbivorous ones were dominant during the winter season. Such seasonal variations correspond to the seasonal shift of the ITCZ. Enhanced occurrence of herbivorous species during the winter-spring season seems a result of surface water mixing generated by the southward shift of the ITCZ. The increase in omnivorous species during the summer season may be due to the northward movement of the ITCZ caused by weakened wind speed, resulting in the intensification of water column stratification and nutrient-poor environment. A significant reduction of planktonic foraminifera specimens during the fall is attributed to heavy precipitation and reduction in light intensity.

  • Investigations were carried out to observe the seasonal succession of phytoplankton, and viable counts of bacteria from the mid to lower reaches of Nakdong Fiver. An intensive monitoring was conducted from May to December 1999 biweekly at 6 sites in a main channel and 3 tributaries. Although there are several sites with high nutrient loading from the basin, all of study sites showed mesotrophic states owing to high discharge(June~September). Relatively low algal biomass and CFUs(mean of chi. a, $12.3{\pm}$11.5 $\mu\textrm{g}${\el}l$, CFUs : 1.8${\times}10^7$) were observed during the rainy season. The diatom population was dominant(over 85% of total community) year-long with peaks(Stephanodiscus hantzchii) in the fall and winter. Dominance of blue-green algal groups during the summer was not observed in the summer. Microorganisms peaked in the summer and fall(June~September), affected mainly by the inputs of phytoplankton and nutrients. Biomass of phytoplankton and CFU counts were higher in the Kumho River than other tributaries and main channel.

  • The interrelationships between distribution of phytoplankton and hydrographical conditions were studied from December 1983 to July 1984 in Yeongil Bay. The temporal variation of phytoplankton abundance seems to be mainly influenced by the vertical stability of water column and the freshwater run-off accompanied with possible nutrient input. The temporal progression of dominant species shows general succession pattern, especially skeletonema costatum was found a dominant species in each month. Although the differences between concentration of chlorophyll a and abundance of phytoplankton may be caused by cell size variation, during the study period they show felatively good linear manner. The phytohydrographic region based on multivariate analysis reflects the relationships between hydrographical condition and distribution pattern of phytoplankton.

  • ASM No. 2(Activated sludge model No. 2) is very useful model to analyze the wastewater treatment which removes nitrogen and phosphorus. But, it is difficult to apply ASM No. 2 to control of wastewater treatment since it has 17 material divisions and 46 parameters. So the purpose of this study was the simplification of ASM No. 2 and the provement of simplification model. Firstly ASM No. 2 was simplified with 5 material division and three phases(Anaerobic, aerobic, anoxic phases). The simplified model was proved by R-square using track study data. As a result of provement, the values of R-square in ${NH_4}^+$ were 0.9815 in ASM No. 2 and 0.9250 in simplified model and in ${NO_3}^-$ were 0.8679 in ASM No. 2 and 0.7914 in simplified model and in ${PO_4}^{3-}$ are 0.9745 in ASM No. 2 and 0.9187 in the simplified model when the ability to express the material variation was compared by R-square. So, the simplified model has enough ability to express the variation of ${NH_4}^+$, ${NO_3}^-$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$.

  • We here outlined our study on the variations in intake of nutrients based on four season 7 consecutive day weighed diet records (WDRs) from 80 Japanese female dietitians in 1996 - 1997. Furthermore, we reviewed Japanese, Korean and international articles investigating variability in consumption of foods as well as nutrients. The relative contributions of variation for all nutrients by person were greater than those by day, week and season. Within individual variances were greater than that between individual variances, being generally observed in Korea and in the world. The ratios of within- vs. between-individual variations ranged from 1.3-26.9 in our study, the ratios being greatest in Korean, followed by Japanese and western people. Based on within individual coefficients of variation, minimal days necessary for estimating nutrient consumption per person within 10% (20%) of the true mean with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. They ranged from 10-35 (3-9) days for energy and major nutrients and 15-640(4-160) days for micro-nutrients. Two Japanese studies reported that the ratios for foods were as a whole greater than those for nutrients, except for cereals, rice and milk. (J community Nutrition 5(2) : 72-82,2003).

  • The short-term variation of sea surface temperature before and after typhoons and increase of chlorophyll a concentration that accompany with the typhoons during summer in the East/Japan Sea were explored by satellite. Four typhoons (NAMTHEUN, MEGI, CHABA and SONGDA) and a typhoon (NABI) passed over the East/Japan Sea in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Decreasing of SST was observed in the every five typhoons, however the magnitude of SST decreasing were various from 1 to $5^{\circ}C$. Chlorophyll a increases were found after the typhoons (0.1-3 ${\mu}g$ $l^{-1})$ except NAMTHEUN, and the area was approximately included in SST decreasing area by the typhoons. It suggests that chlorophyll a increase was caused by nutrient input from subsurface layer by strong mixing. On the other hand, rarely chlorophyll a increase was observed in northern area of polar frontal zone, which is located in $38-41^{\circ}N$, than northern area, and chlorophyll a increase in coastal area was higher (more than 3 times) than offshore area. It might suggest that chlorophyll a increase in the East/Japan Sea is also related with the depth or nitracline depth that affects the amount of nutrients supply to the upper layer by typhoon mixing.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the conversion of sludge from conventional activated sludge to nitrogen-phosphorus removal sludge using two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics were similar between SBR and SBBR and the removal efficiencies were very low when the influent TOC concentrations were low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies in SBR were 96% and 77.5%, respectively, which were higher than those in SBBR (88% and 42.5%) at the high influent TOC concentration. In SBBR, the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification was occurred because of the biofilm process. The variations of pH, DO concentration and ORP were changed as the variation of influent TOC concentration both in SBR and SBBR and their periodical characteristics were cleary shown at the high influent TOC concentration. Especially, the pH, DO concentration and ORP inflections, were cleary occurred in SBR compared with SBBR.

  • This study was carried out to develop the control system with PLC and its operating software and to investigate its control ability of greenhouse environments. Two experimental greenhouses were controlled by PLC and ON/OFF controller, respectively. In greenhouse controlled by PLC, target values of air temperature, relative humidity and $CO_2$ concentration were automatically changed. In warm-water heating, the variation of air temperature was reduced to $\pm$ $0.6^{\circ}C$ by the method of proportional-integration(PI) control with an inverter. In ventilation, the variation of air temperature was reduced, since windows open and close with multistage by mutual relation formula among the target, indoor, and outdoor temperature. Relative humidity at daytime was maintained with range of 35% to 55% by PLC controlled fogger. $CO_2$ concentration was automatically controlled from 300 to 800 $\mu$molㆍ$mol^{-1}$ according to amount of solar radiation. The suppling amount and frequency of nutrient solution were controlled by total integrated solar radiation. Difference in the yield of cucumber in the greenhouse controlled by PLC and by ON/OFF controller was not significant at the 5% level.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in two sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs). SBBR1 had a short first non-aeration period and SBBR2 had a long first non-aeration period. The removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in each SBBR were precisely observed according to the variation of influent TOC concentration, and the operation control parameters (pH, DO concentration, ORP) in each reactor were measured. In biological nitrogen removal, there was little difference between SBBR1 and SBBR2 and the nitrogen removal efficiencies were very low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics in high influent TOC concentration were different from those in low TOC. Nitrogen removals by simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) were occurred in both SBBR1 and SBBR2. The P removal in SBBR1 was superior to that in SBBR2. The second P release was observed in SBBR1 which had long second non-aeration period.
