Purpose : The purpose of this study is to look into the change of area and space organization percentage of wards in main general hospitals in Busan and Gyeongnam. Method : Patient area, nursing area, service area, training area, common area were classified for functional space organization. Patient area was reclassified to bedroom and comfort area, and common area was reclassified into vertical circulation, horizontal circulation and facility area. Also, method of area calculation was chosen standard to wall center-lines following building act 911 and functional space area of each hospital was estimated and comparatively analyzed. Result : For hospitals completed before 2000, area ratio by functional space for patient area, nursing area, service area and common area showed 53.6%, 10.2%, 0.8%, and 35.3% respectively. For hospitals completed after 2000, area ratio by functional space for patient area, nursing area, service space, and common area showed 49.2%, 12.6%, 1.1%, and 37.2% respectively. Implications : Through this study, change of percentage of space organization of main general hospitals in Busan Gyeongnam can be understood. Also because most studies on area organization of general hospital wards were focused on the capital area, this study provides basic material for future studies related to area of general hospital wards in Busan Gyeongnam.
Purpose : This study is to confirm the relation of the value orientation of the nursing unit manager and the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of the nursing unit nurse. Method : We used the systematic questionnaires as a study tool. The contents were composed of 46 questions in total such as 4 questions of general feature, 23 value-oriented questions, 10 job satisfaction questions, and 9 organizational commitment questions. The period of data collection was from August to September 2000. Result : 1) The value of flexibility was 3.82 points (${\pm}.3788$), which is above average. The values of equalitarianism was 3.37 points (${\pm}.4422$), which is above average. 2) The leadership pattern according to the value orientation perceived by the head nurses in 6 clusters has been divided into 3 patterns of change-oriented leader, task-oriented and stability-oriented leader. 3) The nurses who worked with the change-oriented leader showed higher values of job satisfaction (F=5.941, p=O.003), and affective commitment (F=5.793, p=O.003) than those who worked with the stability-oriented leader. Conclusion : As revealed in this study, we think that we have to consider that the change-oriented leader can produce higher performance of an organization than the stability-oriented leader, and write the basic data for the educational courses of leadership development or workshops etc. in order for the nursing unit managers to play their roles for the effective ward-unit management.
Purpose: This study was designed to describe the nurses' knowledge and attitude about incidence reporting according to nursing organizational culture and organizational characteristics. Methods: The subjects of this study were 783 clinical nurses who were in A university hospital in Gyeonggi-Do. The data were collected from May, 20, 2009 to June, 2, 2009. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive methods, Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression in SPSS win(12.0). Results: Nurses' knowledge and attitude about incidence reporting were positively correlated with innovation oriented culture, relation oriented culture, and culture of patient safety. And among characteristics of nursing organization, communication, decision making, centralization were positively correlated with nurses' knowledge and attitude about incidence reporting. But the most correlated factor with nurses' knowledge and attitude about incidence reporting was culture of patient safety. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that to encourage reporting incidence, there must be a organizational approach, such as creating a culture of patient safety, active participating decision making, and communication.
Purpose: This study is to identify the effect of organizational characteristics on knowledge sharing in a general hospital nurses. Method: The objects of this study were 358 nurses who had worked in a general Hospital. Data were collected from May, 3rd to May, 10th in 2004 through questionnaire. Five structured Instruments were used to collect the data. Result: The knowledge sharing of nurses was the positive correlation with openness of communication, learning orientation, the support of director of nursing department, and application of information technology(r=.431${\sim}$.611, p=.000). The degree of nurse's knowledge sharing showed a significant difference according to nurses' education level, duration of working, duty shift, working field, position in Hospital(p=.05). Openness of communication appeared into a most important predictor in knowledge sharing of Nurses, and then was learning orientation, the support of director of nursing department, application of information technology in order(p=.000). All of these variables explained 55.1% of knowledge sharing of nurses. Conclusion: To increase knowledge sharing of nurses, nursing organization will have to make up organization culture of opening communication and learning orientation of nurse, promote up the support of director of nursing department and application of information technology.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to build a conceptual framework of bullying in nursing workplace. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify concepts in relation to bullying in nursing workplace by searching research articles published between 1995 and 2013. In-depth interviews were performed with 14 nurses who experienced bullying at work. The Hybrid Model was applied for concept analysis which led to identify attributes of bullying in nursing workplace. Results: The antecedents of bullying in nursing workplace were offenders, victims, and administrators. They create negative effects on organizational culture and imbalance of power between authority and subordinate workers in the organization. Bullying in nursing workplace that occurred in the forms of inefficient organizational culture, imbalance of power, and the vulnerability of individual or individuals and groups of individuals formed an unstable dynamic. It is expressed as verbal and nonverbal bullying, work-related bullying, and external threats. Consequently, workplace bullying causes physical and psychological withdrawal and increased negative energy in an organization. Conclusions: Workplace bullying consisted of verbal abuse, alienation, unreasonable work processes, restriction on work-related rights, and external threat.
Purpose: The purposes of the study were to examine whether nurses' followership style influence organizational effectiveness and to test the model of organizational effectiveness including the factors of nursing organizational culture, leadership style, and followership style. Methods: Data were collected from July 10th to september 20th in 2006 from 451 nurses working in four acute care hospitals. Data analysis were performed by Chi-square test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson Correlation, and maximum likelihood estimation, using the SAS and LISREL 8.30 program. Results: The findings showed that the types of nurses' followership were classified as passive (21.1%), alienated (8.2%), conformist (16.4%), pragmatist (35.9%), and effective style (18.4%). There was significant difference in the organizational effectiveness among the nurses with different followership styles. In testing the path model, transformational, transactional leadership directly influenced followership style. Followership directly influenced organizational effectiveness. Conclusion: The overall fitness of the model was good, evidenced by general fitness index (GFI)=.94, adjusted goodness of fitness index (AGFI)=.82, and root mean square residual (RMSEA)=.06. Based on the findings, it is recommended to develop a program for enhancing effective followership in nursing organization.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine potential factors related to the management of cancer pain, that is, hospital institutional factors as well as personal aspects of nurses. Methods: This study was a descriptive research study in which 229 RNs working in 2 tertiary medical institutions in Seoul and 4 secondary medical institutions in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi were surveyed. Results: It was found that nurses' knowledge about pain intervention, their working division and their knowledge about the use of analgesics had different effects on their pharmacologic interventions. These 3 variables explained 14.5% of the variance regarding pharmacologic interventions. On the other hand, nurses' knowledge about pain interventions and nursing organization were variables affecting non-pharmacologic interventions by the nurses. These two variables explained 22.1% of the variance regarding non-pharmacologic interventions by the nurses. Conclusion: The findings indicate that nursing organization, one of hospital institutional factors, had significant effects on non-pharmacologic interventions. Therefore, to increase effective pain management by nurses, an organizational system should be established such as placement of nurse practitioners, improvement of nurses' autonomy in pain management, and development and distribution of standardized guidelines.
The purpose of this study is to identify the status of school health and analyze affecting factors of school nurses' self confidence and nursing activities of the secondary school in Seoul. The data was collected from 13th of August to 30th of October. The self reported questionairs were distributed during one of the school nurses seminars held in Seoul and 93 secondary school nurses answered. Analysis of the data was done utilizing SPSS for percentage, mean, T-test ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficients. The results of study are summerized as follows; 1. General Characteristics The mean age of the subjects was 33.4 and mean length of experience as a school nurse was 7.3 years. 79.5 percent of them had clinical experiences and the mean clinic experience was 2.1 years. The majority of them were graduate of the baccalaureate nursing programs and 82.8 percent of them were married. 72.0 percent of the sample had religion, and 60.2 percent of them were in the national or public schools. 90.3 percent of them had independent duty. 2. The status of school health resources In average, there were 2,445 students, 37 classes and 63 teachers per school nurse. 48.4 percent of them were aware of the school budget. The budget for school health was 585,000 won per school in average. 30.0 percent of the schools had school health organization. The schools whose health clinics were on the first floor consisted of 79.3 percent, among them 42.9 percent were on the center of the building office. 3. Activities of school health nursing The average number of students using health clinic were 430 per month. The majority of the problem was digestive problem. There were 7.5 times of mean correspondences with parents per year. The activities of the school nurses were clinic management (29.0%), health care services (23.5%) and health education (14.1%). 4. The degrees of self confidence of the school nurse and nursing activities Self confidence measured by 6 items of self-reported questionaires scored by 4 point Likert Scale revealed. The nurses' self-confidence was 2.922 in clinic management, 2.909 in health education, 2.759 in program planning and evaluation, 2.757 in health care services, 2.692 in management of school environment, and 2.250 in operation of school health organization. The nursing activities scored by 2 point. The nursing activities was 1,870 in program planning and evaluation, 1.853 in health education, 1.843 in clinic management, 1.739 in health care services, 1.696 in management of school environment and 1.265 in operating of school health organization. 5. Factors affecting self confidence and nursing activities of school nurses The general characteristics of the school nurses and the school health resources were related to self confidence and nursing activities. The most significant variable to nurses' self confidence was type of the school ownership and the presence of school health organization was the most significant factor to nursing activities.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of hospital organization structure, organization culture, organization conflict and the interrelation of influential factor in organization conflict. The data for this study were collected through a self-administered survey with a structured delivered to 755 subjects including several nursing staff members, administration staff members and medical technicians at six hospitals. The structural equation model was used to examine the relation of organization structure, organization culture and organization conflict. The results of the analysis in this study were as follows. First, organization structure had a positive influence on organization conflict, especially in terms of complexity and centralization. But, formalization had a negative influence on organization conflict. Second, organization culture had a positive influence on organization conflict, especially in terms of group culture, developmental culture, and hierarchical culture. But, group culture had a negative influence on organization conflict. Third, organization structure had positive influences, especially on organization culture complexity, centralization, and formalization. But, centralization had negative influences too.
