Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the importance and usability of the curriculum of the oriental nursing educational program among clinical nurses who completed the program. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Data were collected from March 1, 2010 to April 25, 2010 from 68 oriental or allied hospital nurses who completed the oriental nursing educational program. A70-item questionnaire of importance and usability of the program curriculum and as an instrument of knowledge of oriental nursing were used. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The majority of participants (69.1%) experienced difficulties in clinical practice due to lack of oriental nursing knowledge and skill. In knowledge of oriental nursing, meridian points had the most negative responses (51.5%), followed by oriental documentation (42.7%) and oriental herbal medicine (20.6%). The highest ranked course in importance was oriental fundamental nursing with clinical practicum in usability. The scores of usability items were significantly lower than those of importance items. Conclusion: This study suggests that the clinical job description and role of oriental nurses should be organized. The oriental nursing educational program needs to include more unique clinical nursing content.
The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a Web-based Nursing Education & Instruction Program to help the clinical nurses improving their knowledge and skills of ostomy care. This program was developed in three different steps: analysis. design. and development. The results of the study were as follows: The analysis step was designed to select the study contents for effective and easy educationthrough the analyses of specialized books. This surveyed and analyzed study contents were categorized into five different sections. Introduction. ostomy classification. ostomy management. elimination management. and life style. After that each section describes necessary information of each category. In the design step. the image files used in this program were created using Adobe Photoshop 6.0. and HTML files were designed and developed using Namo Editor 5.0. In the development step. the developed program was published into Web using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and then finalized after trial operation for testing of real users. In addition. this Web-based Nursing Education & Instruction Program will be used as excellentand effective tool for continuous and lifelong education in nursingfield. In this study. computer-aided education program was developed for ostomy management and managed at the Web-Server (http://hshong.knu.ac.kr/ostomy) in order to help nurses real-time education in clinical field by this program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a multimedia learning program for patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) diet education using standardized patients and to examine the effects of the program on educational skills, communication skills, DM diet knowledge and learning satisfaction. Methods: The study employed a randomized control posttest non-synchronized design. The participants were 108 third year nursing students (52 experimental group, 56 control group) at K university in Seoul, Korea. The experimental group had regular lectures and the multimedia learning program for DM diet education using standardized patients while the control group had regular lectures only. The DM educational skills were measured by trained research assistants. Results: The students who received the multimedia learning program scored higher for DM diet educational skills, communication skills and DM diet knowledge compared to the control group. Learning satisfaction of the experimental group was higher than the control group, but statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Clinical competency was improved for students receiving the multimedia learning program for DM diet education using standardized patients, but there was no statistically significant effect on learning satisfaction. In the nursing education system there is a need to develop and apply more multimedia materials for education and to use standardized patients effectively.
Purpose: This study was undertaken to establish the framework for development of the curriculum of genetics in Nursing Education. Methods: The Internet search, literature review of the US system of genetic nurses, genetic graduate nursing education programs and curricula for nurse in Korea were reviewed and analyzed. The curriculums of genetic nursing education in the US are mainly conducted in of master's program and genetically related subjects consists of basic genetics subjects, basic applied genetics subjects, genetics in nursing subjects and practical training subjects. Lastly a genetic nursing education program in Korea 44 hr of lectures and practical training of 4 hr is composed of basic genetics, genetic cancer, genetics in nursing and practicum in the computer lab and online include family history assessment, pedigree construction, breast and colorectal cancer risk calculations, and ELSI discussions. Conclusion: This study suggested that genetic nursing education course needs in master's program as detailed subjects. Also the establishment of the genetic nurse system is an urgent needed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and apply simulation-based nursing education program for post-myomectomy care in nursing students. Methods: One group pre-post design was utilized. One hundred and thirty two participants consisting of 66 nursing students 132 participants consisting of 66 nursing students team were recruited. The data were collected from March 2 to June 12, 2015. Eight hours of simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care was operated. Forty five items of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was developed and content validity was tested using the content validity index. Results: The total score of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was 90 and mean score of it was 82 (SD 4.2). The item showing the lowest mean score was 'education for Foley catheter management'. Mean score of performance was 92.7%, education 90.2% and assessment 89.9% respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it would be useful to use the simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care for evaluating clinical performance in nursing students.

Purpose. The purposes of this study were to develop a PBL program for continuing nurse education and to evaluate the program after its implementation. Methods. The PBL program was developed in the core cardio-pulmonary nursing concepts through a collaborative approach with a nursing school and a hospital. The PBL packages with simulation on ACLS were implemented to 40 clinical nurses. The entire PBL program consisted of six 3-hour weekly classes and was evaluated by the participants' subjective responses. Results. Two PBL packages in cardio-pulmonary system including clinical cases and tutorial guidelines were developed. The 57.5 % of the participants responded positively about the use of PBL as continuing nurse education in terms of self-motivated and cooperative learning, whereas 20.0% of the participants answered that the PBL method was not suitable for clinical nurses. Some modifications were suggested in grouping participants and program contents for PBL. Conclusion. The PBL method could be utilized to promote nurses' clinical competencies as well as self-learning abilities. Further research is needed in the implementation strategies of PBL-based continuing education in order to improve its effectiveness.

Purpose: This study intends to examine the effects of a stepwise communication education program among nursing college students, focusing on scenarios and nursing case-based role playing. Methods: The study design was a one-group repeated measure ANOVA. Participants were 27 nursing students in practice. Students participated in 5-week stepwise communication education program using SBAR; including 1 week of lecture education, 4 weeks of scenarios and nursing case-based role playing. The data were collected at each level of the education process: pre-education, after 1 week of lectures, and after completion of scenarios and nursing case-based role playing. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine changes in SBAR technique knowledge and communication self-efficacy. Results: The stepwise communication education program using SBAR was effective in increasing SBAR technique knowledge, and communication self-efficacy. The lecture-based education was effective only in the area of SBAR technique knowledge and its subscale, attitudes towards SBAR. However, scenarios and nursing case-based role playing was broadly effective across communication self-efficacy, SBAR technique knowledge, and its subscale, knowledge of the SBAR. Conclusion: Based on this study, we propose that it is necessary to confirm the effect of long-term SBAR communication education using scenarios and nursing case-based role playing in nursing students' practice.
