Objectives: The purpose of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on a patient with somatic symptom disorder hospitalized after a traffic accident. Methods: The subject for this study was a patient diagnosed with somatic symptom disorder that worsened after a traffic accident. During hospitalization, herbal medicine, acupuncture, psychotherapy, and other treatments were performed. Clinical effect was evaluated using Heart Rate Variability (HRV), BDI (Beck Depression Inventory)-II, BAI (Beck Anxiety Inventory), Global assessment (G/A), and Numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: After 36 days of treatment, BDI-II score was reduced from 17 to 5. BAI score was reduced from 23 to 8. Overall somatic symptoms and pain showed decreases. Conclusions: Korean medicine treatment might be effective for somatic symptom disorder that is worsened after a traffic accident.

Objectives: This case study aimed to report the effect of Sihogyejigungang-tang (SGGT) on headache with dyspepsia based on the disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS) based on the Shanghanlun provisions. Methods: According to the DPIDS based on the Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Greater Yang Disease Chest Bind and treated with SGGT. The results of treatment were evaluated by a numerical rating scale (NRS), the Korean Headache Impact Test (KHIT-6), and change in clinical symptoms. Results: After administering SGGT for 160 days, the NRS improved from 9 to 1 and the KHIT-6 improved from 70 to 44. No serious treatment-related adverse events were reported. Conclusions: This study shows the effective treatment of headache with dyspepsia using SGGT based on the DPIDS based on the Shanghanlun provisions.

The aim of this study was to report on the improvement of shoulder pain resulting from disorders of the rotator cuff such as impingement syndrome and adhesive capsulitis, by manual acupuncture (MA) and pharmacopuncture (PA) following origin/insertion technique (OIT) of applied kinesiology (AK). Two patients were treated with MA and PA after OIT on shoulder muscles. The Numerical Rating Scale and the assessment of the Japanese Orthopedic Association scores were used to assess the pain, and ultrasound images were taken to compare treatment outcome. This study showed that MA and PA following OIT may be an effective treatment for impingement syndrome and adhesive capsulitis.

Objectve: To inform a clinical usefulness of Nangan-geon (暖肝煎) decoction to treat a refractory abdominal pain especially in eldery. Methods: This case report presents an 85-year old male patient who had been suffered with a refractory abdominal pain without any abnormality in laboratory test and radiological examination for 5-years. The clinical outcome was observed by numerical rating scale (NRS) of self-reporting method. Results: Based on his previous multiple normal examination results from Western hospitals and clinical features including thin body (19.6 BMI), nocturnal pain around lower abdomen and cold-sensitivity, author diagnosed him as "deficiency and cold of liver-Qi (肝氣虛寒)" similar to intestinal spasm. After prescription with Nangan-geon (暖肝煎) for one month, all symptoms became improved notably (NRS 5), and almost completely recovered as a level of normal condition in 3 months (NRS 1). Conclusion: This study would show the potential of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) therapies for a refractory functional abdominal pain, and especially efficacy of Nangan-geon against cold-pattern of nonspecific abdominal pain in elderly patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to report on a systemic sclerosis patient diagnosed with Yulgyuk and Banui syndrome improved by Korean medical treatment. Methods: We treated a 70-year-old woman who had swallowing disorders and frequent vomiting caused by systemic sclerosis with herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment for six months. Treatment was evaluated with a numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: After treatment, swallowing disorders and frequent vomiting decreased. The NRS decreased from 8 to 3. Conclusions: This case suggests that Korean medical treatment was effective for alleviating a swallowing disorder and frequent vomiting caused by systemic sclerosis as a conservative treatment.

The purpose of this clinical case is to evaluate the efficacy of the Korean medical treatment on a ligamentum teres tear of the hip. One patient, admitted to Daejeon Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine was diagnosed with a ligamentum teres tear of the hip by hip magnetic resonance imaging. We treated the patient using the Korean medical treatments, including acupunture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medication, and cupping. We measured the numerical rating scale (NRS), passive range of motion (PROM) and the changes of symptoms. After 13 days, NRS decreased from 8 to 1 respectively, PROM of hip joint has recovered, and the symptoms of the patient improved. In conclusion, this study shows that Korean medical treatment might be effective in treating the patient with a ligamentum teres tear of the hip.

Objectives The purpose of this case study is to report the improvement of hand foot and mouth disease after using Galgeunhaegi-tang Methods A Taeumin patient suffering from painful hand foot and mouth disease was treated with herb medicine Galgeunhaegi-tang, acupuncture and cupping therapy. Rhei radix et rhizoma was added or removed from herb medicine according to patient's stool condition. Severity of pain and general symptom was measured using Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), and the picture of patient's hand and foot was taken. Results & Conclusions After taking Galgeunhaegi-tang, symptoms including pain, rash, blisters, and general conditions improved as patient's stool condition improved from constipation to normal. In conclusion, this case report shows that Galgeunhaegi-tang can be effective to Taeumin hand foot and mouth disease patients.

Multifidus cervicis plane block has been effectively used to provide analgesia during and after cervical spine surgery, but not for any other purpose. Here, we report three cases of chronic axial neck pain unresponsive to medical treatment. We performed multifidus cervicis plane block bilaterally, which lowered numerical rating scale (NRS) score within 2 weeks. Thus, multifidus cervicis plane block is one of the novel options that may be used for chronic axial neck pain.

Objective We report a case about a Soyangin patient with diabetic neuropathy. His symptoms were alleviated with Sasang Constitutional medicine. Methods A Soyangin patient with diabetic neuropathy was treated by herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture according to Sasang Constitutional Medicine. The progress was evaluated with numerical rating scale(NRS) and blood sugar test(BST). Results Sasang Constitutional Medicine seems to be effective for the symtoms of the patient with diabetic neuropathy in this case. Conclusions This case study shows that Sasang Constitutional Medicine may be an effective treatment for Soyangin's diabetic neuropathy.

This study aimed to demonstrate a safe and effective procedure targeting the A1 pulley with ultrasound-guided acupotomy in patients with a trigger finger. Six ultrasound-guided acupotomy procedures were performed on 1 patient. The Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) score, Quinnell's classification of triggering, Tanaka score, and A1 pulley thickness were measured using ultrasonography before and after treatment. This study revealed reduced NRS score, Quinnell's classification of triggering, Tanaka score, and thickness of the A1 pulley, with no side effects during the procedure. This indicates ultrasound-guided acupotomy as an effective and safe treatment method for patients with a trigger finger. Further studies are required to evaluate the beneficial effects of this treatment.
