This study evaluated slope stability through a case study to determine the disaster risks associated with increased deforestation in structures, including schools and apartments, located in urban areas adjacent to slopes. The slope behind the ○○ High School in Gwangju, Korea, collapsed owing to heavy rain in August 2018. Historically, rainwater drained well around the slope during the rainy season. However, during the collapse, a large amount of seepage water flowed out of the slope surface and a shallow failure occurred along the saturated soil layer. To analyze the cause of the collapse, the images of the upper area of the slope, which could not be directly identified, were captured using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A digital elevation model of the slope was constructed through image analysis, making it possible to calculate the rainfall flow direction and the area, width, and length of logging areas. The change in the instability of the slope over time owing to rainfall lasting ten days before the collapse was analyzed through numerical analysis. Imaging techniques based on the UAV images were found to be effective in analyzing ground disaster risk maps in urban areas. Furthermore, the analysis was found to predict the failure before its actual occurrence.

Image halftoning is a technique for varying grayscale images into two-tone binary images. Unfortunately, the static representation of an image-half toning, wherever each pixel intensity is combined by its local neighbors only, causes missing subjective problem. Also, the existing noise causes an instability criterion. In this paper an image half-toning is represented as a dynamical system for recognizing the global representation. Also, noise is reduced based on a probabilistic model. Since image half-toning is considered as 2-D matrix with a full connected pass, this structure is recognized by the dynamical system of Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) which is defined by its template. Bayesian Rough Sets is used in exploiting the ideal CNNs construction that synthesis its dynamic. Also, Bayesian rough sets contribute to enhance the quality of the halftone image by removing noise and discovering the effective parameters in the CNNs template. The novelty of this method lies in finding a probabilistic based technique to discover the term of CNNs template and define new learning rules for CNNs internal work. A numerical experiment is conducted on image half-toning corrupted by Gaussian noise.
Many of small-scale devices should be designed to tolerate high temperature changes. In the present study, the states of buckling and stability of nano-scale cylindrical shell structure integrated with piezoelectric layer under various thermal and electrical external loadings are scrutinized. In this regard, a multi-layer composite shell reinforced with graphene nano-platelets (GNP) having different patterns of layer configurations is modeled. An outer layer of piezoelectric material receiving external voltage is also attached to the cylindrical shell for the aim of observing the effects of voltage on the thermal buckling condition. The cylindrical shell is mathematically modeled with first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Linear elasticity relationship with constant thermal expansion coefficient is used to extract the relationship between stress and strain components. Moreover, minimum virtual work, including the work of the piezoelectric layer, is engaged to derive equations of motion. The derived equations are solved using numerical method to find out the effects of temperature and external voltage on the buckling stability of the shell structure. It is revealed that the boundary condition, external voltage and geometrical parameter of the shell structure have notable effects on the temperature rise required for initiating instability in the cylindrical shell structure.
The nonlinear snap-through buckling of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) curved tubes is analytically investigated in this research. It is assumed that the FG-CNTRC curved tube is supported on a three-parameter nonlinear elastic foundation and is subjected to the uniformly distributed pressure and thermal loads. Properties of the curved nanocomposite tube are distributed across the radius of the pipe and are given by means of a refined rule of mixtures approach. It is also assumed that all thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposite tube are temperature-dependent. The governing equations of the curved tube are obtained using a higher-order shear deformation theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large deflection in the curved tube. Equations of motion are solved using the two-step perturbation technique for nanocomposite curved tubes which are simply-supported and clamped. Closed-form expressions are provided to estimate the snap-buckling resistance of FG-CNTRC curved pipes rested on nonlinear elastic foundation in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of the distribution pattern and volume fraction of CNTs, thermal field, foundation stiffnesses, and geometrical parameters on the instability of the curved nanocomposite tube.

In order to generate meshes automatically for finite element analysis of complex structures such as aircraft, a large number of triangular elements are typically created. However, triangular elements are less accurate than rectangular elements, so it is difficult to obtain a reliable solution. This problem can be improved through the meshfree method using the back cell integration. However, this method also causes some problems such as over-use of the integration points and inefficiency of the integral domain. In order to improve these problems, a method of performing integration by setting the integral area based on a node basis has been proposed, but in the case of incompressible material problems, the numerical accuracy deteriorates due to the vibration phenomenon of the solution. Therefore, in this paper, the modified meshfree method is proposed which sets the integral domain as an element domain instead of the nodal domain, and the proposed method improves the numerical instability caused by the conventional meshfree method without decreasing the accuracy regardles of the shape of integral domain. The effectiveness of the modified meshfree method is verified by using 2-D examples.

Mechanism of a periodic oscillation of shock-induced combustion over a two- dimensional wedges and axi-symmetric cones were investigated through a series of numerical simulations at off-attaching condition of oblique detonation waves(ODW). A same computational domain over 40 degree half-angle was considered for two-dimensional and axi-symmetric shock-induced combustion phenomena. For two-dimensional shock-induced combustion, a 2H2+02+17N2 mixture was considered at Mach number was 5.85with initial temperature 292 K and initial pressureof 12 KPa. The Rankine-Hugoniot relation has solution of attached waves at this condition. For axi-symmetric shock-induced combustion, a H2+2O2+2Ar mixture was considered at Mach number was 5.0 with initial temperature 288 K and initial pressure of 200 mmHg. The flow conditions were based on the conditions of similar experiments and numerical studies.[1, 3]Numerical simulation was carried out with a compressible fluid dynamics code with a detailed hydrogen-oxygen combustion mechanism.[4, 5] A series of calculations were carried out by changing the fluid dynamic time scale. The length wedge is varied as a simplest way of changing the fluid dynamic time scale. Result reveals that there is a chemical kinetic limit of the detached overdriven detonation wave, in addition to the theoretical limit predicted by Rankine-Hugoniot theory with equilibrium chemistry. At the off-attaching condition of ODW the shock and reaction waves still attach at a wedge as a periodically oscillating oblique shock-induced combustion, if the Rankine-Hugoniot limit of detachment isbut the chemical kinetic limit is not.Mechanism of the periodic oscillation is considered as interactions between shock and reaction waves coupled with chemical kinetic effects. There were various regimes of the periodicmotion depending on the fluid dynamic time scales. The difference between the two-dimensional and axi-symmetric simulations were distinct because the flow path is parallel and uniform behind the oblique shock waves, but is not behind the conical shock waves. The shock-induced combustion behind the conical shockwaves showed much more violent and irregular characteristics. From the investigation of characteristic chemical time, condition of the periodic instability is identified as follows; at the detaching condition of Rankine-Hugoniot theory, (1) flow residence time is smaller than the chemical characteristic time, behind the detached shock wave with heat addition, (2) flow residence time should be greater than the chemical characteristic time, behind an oblique shock wave without heat addition.
The structure and evolution of a thunderstorm outflow in two dimensions with no environmental wind are investigated using a cloud-resolving model with explicit liquid-ice phase microphysical processes (ARPS: Advanced Regional Prediction System). The turbulence structure of the outflow is explicitly resolved with a high-resolution grid size of 50m. The simulated single-cell storm and its associated Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) billows are found to have the lift stages of development maturity, and decay. The secondary pulsation and splitting of convective cells resulted from interactions between cloud dynamics and microphysics are observed. The cooled downdrafts caused by the evaporation of rain and hail in the relatively dry lower atmosphere result in thunderstorm cold-air outflow. The outflow head propagates with almost constant speed. The KH billows formed by the KH instability cause turbulence mixing from the top of the outflow and control the structure of the outflow. Ihe KH billows are initiated at the outflow head, and pow and decay as moving rearward relative to the gust front. The numerical simulation results of the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the fastest growing perturbation to the critical shear-layer depth and the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the billow to its maximum amplitude are matched well with the results of other studies.
The time-domain solution from the Kirchhoff integral equation for an exterior problem is not unique at certain eigen-frequencies associated with the fictitious internal modes as happening in frequency-domain analysis. One of the solution methods is the CHIEF (Combined Helmholtz Integral Equation Formulation) approach, which is based on employing additional zero-pressure constraints at some interior points inside the body. Although this method has been widely used in frequency-domain boundary element method due to its simplicity, it was not used in time-domain analysis. In this work, the CHIEF approach is formulated appropriately for time-domain acoustic boundary element method by constraining the unknown surface pressure distribution at the current time, which was obtained by setting the pressure at the interior point to be zero considering the shortest retarded time between boundary nodes and interior point. Sound radiation of a pulsating sphere was used as a test example. By applying the CHIEF method, the low-order fictitious modes could be damped down satisfactorily, thus solving the non-uniqueness problem. However, it was observed that the instability due to high-order fictitious modes, which were beyond the effective frequency, was increased.

The nonlinear forward diffraction of a modulated wave train by a thin wedge has been studied analytically. Since the physical variables involved in the problem have vastly different scales, the multiple scale expansion method has been used to obtain an approximate solution. To simplify the problem. the wedge is assumed to be thin and the parabolic approximation is utilized. The wave evolution can be described by a kind of the cubic Schrodinger equation. which consists of the linear time evolution. the lateral dispersion and the nonlinearity. Numerical results indicate that the nonlinearity. which it defined by the ratio of the ratio of the incident wave to the wedge angle. governs the amplitude and the stability of diffracted waves. The instability of dirffracted waves becomes more pronounced as the nonlinearity increases and the modulation ratio decreases. It is also found that the stem waves. initially developed along the wedge. can not sustain for a long time.

This study investigates the design, analysis, and implementation of the square-root extended Kalman filter by using an algorithm derived by combining the Potter or Carlson algorithm with the modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm, for sensorless speed control of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The sensitivity of the Kalman filter to round-off errors is a well-known problem. A possible way to address this limitation is by combining the square-root concept and Kalman filter that can improve the numerical performance and solve instability-related problems such as divergence. This paper presents the design and analysis of the implementation of such a square-root extended Kalman filter. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed filter, experimental results under several operating conditions, such as high and low speeds, reversal rotation, detuned parameters and load test, have been analyzed. Further, code sizes and operation times have been compared. Experimental results establish the performance of the proposed square-root extended Kalman filter-based estimation technique for sensorless speed control of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor.
