In the turbopump inducer of a liquid propellant rocket engine, cavitation is affected by acceleration that occurs during an actual launch sequence. Since cavitation instabilities such as rotating cavitations and cavitation surges are suppressed during launch, it is difficult to obtain data on the influence of acceleration on cavitation instabilities. Therefore, as a fundamental investigation, in the present study, a three-blade cyclic cascade is simulated numerically in order to investigate the influence of acceleration on time-averaged and unsteady characteristics of cavitation that arise in cascade. Several cases of acceleration in the axial direction of the cascade, including accelerations in the upstream and downstream directions, are considered. The numerical results reveal that cavity volume is suppressed in low cavitation number condition and cavitation performance increases as a result of high acceleration in the axial-downstream direction, also, the inverse tendency is observed in the axial-upstream acceleration. Then, the regions in which the individual cavitation instabilities occur shift slightly to a low-cavitation-number region as the acceleration increases downstream. In addition, in a downstream acceleration field, neither sub-synchronous rotating cavitation nor rotating-stall cavitation are observed. On the other hand, rotating-stall cavitation occurs in a relatively higher-cavitation-number region in an upstream acceleration field. Then, acceleration downstream is robust against cavitation instabilities, whereas cavitation instabilities easily occur in the case of acceleration upstream. Additionally, comparison with the Froude number under the actual launch conditions of a Japanese liquid propellant rocket reveals that the cavitation performance will not be affected by the acceleration under the current launch conditions.

Combustion-stability rating of impinging-jet injector is conducted numerically using hot-fire simulation in a subscale chamber with the five-element injector head. A sample F(fuel)-O(dxidizer)-O-F impinging-jet injector is adopted. In this work, instantaneous chemical reaction is adopted for hot-fire simulation based on the assumption that mixing process of fuel and oxidizer streams is controlling. The model chamber was designed based on the methodologies proposed in the previous work regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions. The present stability boundaries are in a good agreement with air-injection and hot-fire experimental data. The proposed numerical method can be applied cost-effectively to stability rating of jet injectors when mixing of fuel and oxidizer jets is the dominant process in instability triggering.
Numerical simulation of the non-linear behavior of (RC) structural walls subjected to severe earthquake ground motions requires a reliable modeling approach that includes important material characteristics and behavioral response features. The objective of this paper is to optimize a simplified method for the assessment of the seismic response and damage development analyses of an RC structural wall building using macro-element model. The first stage of this study investigates effectiveness and ability of the macro-element model in predicting the flexural nonlinear response of the specimen based on previous experimental test results conducted in UCLA. The sensitivity of the predicted wall responses to changes in model parameters is also assessed. The macro-element model is next used to examine the dynamic behavior of the structural wall building-all the way from elastic behavior to global instability, by applying an approximate Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), based on Uncoupled Modal Response History Analysis (UMRHA), setting up nonlinear single degree of freedom systems. Finally, the identification of the global stiffness decrease as a function of a damage variable is carried out by means of this simplified methodology. Responses are compared at various locations on the structural wall by conducting static and dynamic pushover analyses for accurate estimation of seismic performance of the structure using macro-element model. Results obtained with the numerical model for rectangular wall cross sections compare favorably with experimental responses for flexural capacity, stiffness, and deformability. Overall, the model is qualified for safety assessment and design of earthquake resistant structures with structural walls.

Because of the instability of a flow pattern in the inlet transition square duct (hereinafter referred to as "transition duct") of a heat recovery steam generator (hereinafter referred to as "HRSG") in a combined cycle power plant, the Reynolds number in the first row of a tube bank is differs sharply from that in the sectional area of the transition duct. This causes differences in the heat flux in each tube in the tube bank. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions provide three-dimensional results for velocity, temperature, and other flow parameters over the entire domain of the duct and HRSG. A renormalization group theory (RNG) based k-${\epsilon}$ turbulent model is used for obtaining the results cited in this study. A porous media option is used for modeling the tube banks and the number of transfer units method is used for determining the heat transfer characteristics. This study describes a comparison between the numerical simulation results and actual design output.
The aim of this paper is to research the change in the turbulent flow and the AOA(Angle Of Attack) occurred by $40^{\circ}$ crosswind to the direction of runway through the three-dimensional numerical analysis and to predict the take-off and landing flight stability. As a result, the maximum amplitude of AOA variation on runway reached $2^{\circ}$ within 3 second because of the wake formed by the constructions in the vicinity of the airport, and the overall effects appeared as an irregular aperiodic forms. Additionally, it was observed that the layout and shape of the buildings effected on the strength of turbulence directly, and the rapid flow generated between the buildings changed into stronger wake and eventually expected that the flow raises serious take-off and landing flight instability.

Effects of helicopter wakes on helicopter aerodynamics are serious, but the wake configuration is very complicated and hard to predict. The purpose of this study is the detailed observation of wake using numerical methods. Vortex lattice method and freewake method are used to track the vortices in the wake. In this paper, the wake configuration is observed during hovering flight. In the case of hovering flight at the moderate thrust level, besides tip vortex, counter-rotating vortex can be observed at the inboard part of blade. When the vortices move downward, tip vortex and counter-rotating vortex get close and influence to each other. Therefore, vortices are highly distorted due to their own instability.

Grid systems used in previous studies were determined to be valid only if the length between the perpendiculars in a model ship was in the range of 6-8 m, and the maximum dynamic trim angle was smaller than $1^{\circ}$. The application of the grid system to a small fishing boat can create numerical instability because the dynamic trim of small boats is generally larger than $3^{\circ}$, and their Froude numbers are in the range of 0.3-0.8. In the present study, resistances of a small fishing boat were stably obtained by reducing the length between the center of buoyancy and the inlet boundary of the numerical domain, and by refining grid cells vertically in a region that would be swept by a free surface. The effective power of the small fishing boat was predicted based on the ITTC-1978 two-dimensional analysis. By using the results of previous towing tank tests, the coefficient of quasi-propulsive efficiency and the brake horsepower at a design draft were calculated.

A modal method is presented for the investigation of the effects of measurement errors in damage detection for dynamic structural systems. The structural modifications to the baseline system result in the response changes of the perturbed structure, which are measured to determine a unique system in the inverse problem of damage detection. If the numerical modal data are exact, mathematical programming techniques can be applied to obtain the accurate structural changes. In practice, however, the associated measurement errors are unavoidable, to some extent, and cause significant deviations from the correct perturbed system because of the intrinsic instability of eigenvalue problem. Hence, a self-equilibrating inverse system is allowed to drift in the close neighborhood of the measured data. A numerical example shows that iterative procedures can be used to search for the damaged structural elements. A small set of selected degrees of freedom is employed for practical applicability and computational efficiency.

Generally the fluid flows within the centrifugal impeller passage as a decelerating flow with an adverse pressure gradient along the stream wise path. This flow tends to be in a state of instability with flow separation zones on the suction surface and on the front shroud. Hence several experimental attempts were earlier made to assess the efficacy of using boundary layer fences to trip the flow in the regions of separation and to make the flow align itself into stream wise direction so that the losses could be minimized and overall efficiency of the diffusion process in the fan could be increased. With the development of CFD, an extensive numerical whole field analysis of the effect of boundary layer fences in discrete regions of suspected separation points is possible. But it is found from the literature that there have been no significant attempts to use this tool to explore numerically the utility of the fences on the flow field. This paper attempts to explore the effect of boundary layer fences corresponding to various geometrical configurations on the impeller as well as on the diffuser. It is shown from the analysis that the fences located on the impellers near the trailing edge on pressure side and suction side improves the static pressure recovery across the fan. Fences provided at the radial mid-span on the pressure side of the diffuser vane and near the leading edge and trailing edge of the suction side of diffuser vanes also improve the static pressure recovery across the fan.
On 31 July 2014, there was a localized torrential rainfall ($58.5mm\;hr^{-1}$) caused by a strong convective cell with thunder showers over Daegwallyeong. In the surface synoptic chart, a typhoon was positioned in the East China Sea and the subtropical high was expanded to the Korean peninsula. A WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) numerical simulation with a resolution of 1 km was performed for a detailed analysis. The simulation result showed a similar pattern in a reflectivity distribution particularly over the Gangwon-do region, compared with the radar reflectivity. According to the results of the WRF simulation, the process and mechanism of the localized heavy rainfall over Daegwallyeong are as follows: (1) a convective instability over the middle part of the Korean peninsula was enhanced due to the low level advection of warm and humid air from the North Pacific high. (2) There was easterly flow from the coast to the mountainous regions around Daegwallyeong, which was generated by the differential heating of the insolation among Daegwallyeong and the Yeongdong coastal plain, and nearby coastal waters. (3) In addition, westerly flow from the western part of Daegwallyeong caused a strong convergence in this region, generating a strong upward motion combined by an orographic effect. (4) This brought about a new convective cell over Daegwallyeong. And this cell was more developed by the outflow from another thunderstorm cell to the south, and finally these two cells were merged to develop as a strong convective cell with thunder showers, leading to the record breaking maximum rainfall per hour ($58.5mm\;hr^{-1}$) in July.
