We study behavior of numerical solutions for a nonlinear eigenvalue problem on ℝn that is reduced from a dispersion managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solution operator of the free Schrödinger equation in the eigenvalue problem is implemented via the finite difference scheme, and the primary nonlinear eigenvalue problem is numerically solved via Picard iteration. Through numerical simulations, the results known only theoretically, for example the number of eigenpairs for one dimensional problem, are verified. Furthermore several new characteristics of the eigenpairs, including the existence of eigenpairs inherent in zero average dispersion two dimensional problem, are observed and analyzed.
Various Eulerian-Lagerangian numerical models for the one-dimensional longtudinal dispersion equation are studied comparatively. In the models studied, the transport equation is decoupled into two component parts by the operator-splitting approach ; one part governing advection and the other dispersion. The advection equation has been solved using the method of characteristics following flud particles along the characteristic line and the result are interpolated onto an Eulerian grid on which the dispersion equation is solved by Crank-Nicholson type finite difference method. In solving the advection equation, various interpolation schemes are tested. Among those, Hermite interpo;ation po;ynomials are superor to Lagrange interpolation polynomials in reducing both dissipation and dispersion errors.

Multivariate control charts for effectively monitoring every component in the dispersion matrix of multivariate normal process are considered. Through the numerical results, we noticed that the multivariate control charts based on sample statistic $V_i$ by Hotelling or $W_i$ by Alt do not work effectively when the correlation coefficient components in dispersion matrix are increased. We propose a combined procedure monitoring every component of dispersion matrix, which operates simultaneously both control charts, a chart controlling variance components and a chart controlling correlation coefficients. Our numerical results show that the proposed combined procedure is efficient for detecting changes in both variances and correlation coefficients of dispersion matrix.

This paper expands a previously proposed optimized higher order (2, 4) finite-difference time-domain scheme (H(2, 4) scheme) for use with lossy material. A low dispersion error is obtained by introducing a weighting factor and two scaling factors. The weighting factor creates isotropic dispersion, and the two scaling factors dramatically reduce the numerical dispersion error at an operating frequency. In addition, the results confirm that the proposed scheme performs better than the H(2, 4) scheme for wideband analysis. Lastly, the validity of the proposed scheme is verified by calculating a scattering problem of a lossy circular dielectric cylinder.
We investigated the combined effect of fiber chromatic dispersion and self-phase modulation (SPM) in multi-channel subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) optical transmission systems. We theoretically analyzed the transmission characteristics of the SCM signals with the effect of SPM and chromatic dispersion in a single-mode optical fiber by numerical simulations based on the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The numerical simulation results revealed that the effect of fiber dispersion and SPM could occur independently between subcarrier channels in two-channel SCM systems for small optical modulation index (OMI) and large channel spacing. However, for large OMI, small channel spacing, and large fiber launching power, we found a performance degradation of the two-channel system compared to that of a single-channel system. These parameters are therefore important for the optimization of multi-channel SCM systems applicable to radio over fiber networks.
Two-dimensional depth-averaged advection-dispersion equation was simulated using FEM. In the straight rectangular channel, the advection-dispersion processes are simulated so that these results can be compared with analyti-cal solutions for the transverse line injection and the point injection. In the straight domain the standard Galerkin method with the linear basis function is found to be inadequate to the advection-dispersion analysis compared to the upwind finite element scheme. The experimental data in the S-curved channel were compared with the result by the numerical model using SUPG(Streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin) method.

A laterally-averaged X-Z numerical model with transformed coordinates is developed to analyze the salinity dispersion in estuaries. Gravitational term, salinity variations with respect to the water depth. and re-evaluation of , salinity boundary condition are examined. Especially. the improvements in stability and accuracy of the numerical algorithm are made by adopting the fractional step method for the dispersion term of the governing equation. The model being applied to the Keum River Esturary, physical and numerical properties of Manning's n and dispersion coefficients are analyzed. Salinity intrusion into the river, influence of upstream river inflows, and salinity distribution for spring/neap tide are also examined.

In long-haul optical communication system consisting of standard single-mode fiber spans and fiber amplifiers, such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier, performance is deteriorated by signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity of the fiber. A combination of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation is an effective technique to compensate for the distortion. In an optical link configured by this combination, a dispersion map mainly affects the compensation of the distorted optical signals. This paper proposes new dispersion maps configured by the decaying or expanding distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in a dispersion-managed link combined with a midway optical phase conjugator. The effect of the proposed dispersion maps on the compensation for distorted 24 channel × 40 Gbps wavelength-division multiplexed signals was assessed through numerical simulation. It was confirmed that all the proposed dispersion maps are most appropriate for the compensation and, furthermore, for the flexibility of link configuration than conventional links.
Research on Lamb wave-based damage identification in plate-like structures depends on precise knowledge of dispersive wave velocity. However, boundary reflections with the same frequency of interest and greater amplitude contaminate direct waves and thus compromise measurement of Lamb wave dispersion in different materials. In this study, non-reflecting boundaries were proposed in both numerical and experimental cases to facilitate time-frequency characterization of Lamb wave dispersion. First, the Lamb wave equations in isotropic and laminated materials were analytically solved. Second, the non-reflecting boundaries were used as a series of frames with gradually increased damping coefficients in finite element models to absorb waves at boundaries while avoiding wave reflections due to abrupt property changes of each frame. Third, damping clay was sealed at plate edges to reduce the boundary reflection in experimental test. Finally, the direct waves were subjected to the slant-stack and short-time Fourier transformations to calculate the dispersion curves of phase and group velocities, respectively. Both the numerical and experimental results suggest that the boundary reflections are effectively alleviated, and the dispersion curves generated by the time-frequency analysis are consistent with the analytical solutions, demonstrating that the combination of non-reflecting boundary and time-frequency analysis is a feasible and reliable scheme for characterizing Lamb wave dispersion in plate-like structures.
In this study, the numerical model for simulation of tsunamis is constructed by using the dispersion-correction scheme, 2nd upwind scheme, dynamic linking method, and so forth. The composed numerical model is used to simulate a hitorical tsunami event. The target tsunami event is the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami. And, the predicted run-up heights of the tsunami at Imwon port are very reasonable compared to available observed data.
