A simulation of failures on responsible elements is only one form of the extreme structural behavior analysis. By understanding the dynamic behavior in incidental situations, it is possible to make a special structural design from the point of the largest axial force, stress and redundancy. The numerical realization of one such simulation analysis was performed using FEM in this paper. The boundary parameters of transient analysis, such as overall structural damping coefficient, load accelerations, time of load fall and internal forces in the responsible structural elements, were determined on the basis of the dynamic experimental parameters. The structure eigenfrequencies were determined in modal analysis. In the study, the basic incidental models were set. The models were identified by many years of monitoring incidental situations and the most frequent human errors in work with heavy structures. The combined load models of structure are defined in the paper since the incidents simply arise as consequences of cumulative errors and failures. A feature of a combined model is that the single incident causes the next incident (consecutive timing) as well as that other simple dynamic actions are simultaneous. The structure was observed in three typical load positions taken from the crane passport (range-load). The obtained dynamic responses indicate the degree of structural sensitivity depending on the character of incident. The dynamic coefficient KD was adopted as a parameter for the evaluation of structural sensitivity.
Damage in structures often leads to failure. Thus it is very important to monitor structures for the occurrence of damage. When damage happens in a structure the consequence is a change in its modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are inspired by human biological neurons and have been applied for damage identification with varied success. Natural frequencies of a structure have a strong effect on damage and are applied as effective input parameters used to train the ANN in this study. The applicability of ANNs as a powerful tool for predicting the severity of damage in a model steel girder bridge is examined in this study. The data required for the ANNs which are in the form of natural frequencies were obtained from numerical modal analysis. By incorporating the training data, ANNs are capable of producing outputs in terms of damage severity using the first five natural frequencies. It has been demonstrated that an ANN trained only with natural frequency data can determine the severity of damage with a 6.8% error. The results shows that ANNs trained with numerically obtained samples have a strong potential for structural damage identification.
The objective of this investigation is to understand the role of hemodynamics in the formation and development of atherosclerosis lesions in the human left coronary artery This study also aims to compare the blood flow characteristics of steady and physiological flows. Three dimensional, steady and physiological flows of blood in the left coronary artery are simulated using the Finite Volume Method. Apparent viscosity of blood is represented as a function of shear rate by the Carreau model. Distributions of velocity, pressure and shear stress in tile left coronary artery bifurcation are presented to compare tile steady and physiological flow characteristics.

Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) of human body experiences a large deformation. May during everyday when large deformation is repeated by various activities such as outdoor activity, ACL easily get damaged. In order to acknowledge the effect of the cyclic large deformation to ACL, the constitutive equations for ACL are derived from experiment data. The concept of the objective stress rate plays a important role wherever large deformation occurs. In order to obtain the objective stress rates the eigenprojection technique is used. A comparison is made for four different cases: Jaumann rate, Green-Naghdi rate, logarithmic rate and twirl tensor of Eulerian triad rate for an isotropic material subject to cyclic deformation, such as simple shear motion. Four different materials are studied to compare the behavior of the materials for ACL using different objective rates. Finally, more complicated model with fibers for soft tissues is used to calculate the behavior subjected to cyclic large deformation.
Electrical impedance tomography is an imaging technique to reconstruct the internal conductivity distribution based on applied small currents and measured voltages through an array of electrodes attached on the boundary of a domain of interest. In this paper, an analytical solver with complete electrode model is derived and the analytical voltage data are calculated. Moreover, the voltage data are also computed with existing numerical solvers such as finite element method and boundary element method. The forward solutions using homogeneous and inhomogeneous conditions are compared with phantom experiments through the root mean square errors.
The problem of invasive species has been recently emerged as one of complicated issues due to increasing globalisation and its consequence of species immigrations. Since in most cases of invasive species it is less likely to fully eradicate them through human efforts, it is often interested in reducing the possibility of ecological disaster caused by the invasive species. This paper provides an optimal control model to minimize such possibility while allowing the stochastic nature of biological growth of the invasive species. Conditions under which the partial eradication effort is optimal are derived. Simple numerical illustration is provided using H1N1 data which is categorized as an invasive disease in microorganism level.
In this work, a novel artificial circular muscle based on shape memory alloy (S.M.A.) is proposed. The design is inspired from the natural circular muscles found in certain organs of the human body such as the small intestine. The heating of the prestrained SMA artificial muscle will induce its contraction. In order to measure the mechanical work provided in this case, the muscle will be mounted on a silicone rubber cylindrical tube prior to heating. After cooling, the reaction of the rubber tube will involve the return of the muscle to its prestrained state. A finite element model of the new SMA artificial muscle was built using the software "ABAQUS". The SMA thermomechanical behavior law was implemented using the user subroutine "UMAT". The numerical results of the finite element analysis of the SMA muscle are presented to shown that the proposed design is able to mimic the behavior of a natural circular muscle.
Due to the recent improvement of living standard of residential buildings, the requirements of the thermal comfort and energy saving in heating system have been raised. The radiant floor heating system has been widely used as a residential heating method, which has been modernized to use hot water running into the tubes embedded in the floor structure. The uniform flow distribution is very important factor for a radiant floor heating system such as a blood vessel system in human body. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the operating characteristics to develop an optimal radiant floor heating system. In this study, numerical analyses were carried out, using a commercial CFD code, FLUENT, to obtain the velocity distribution under steady, three-dimensional, standard k-$\varepsilon$ model and no-slip condition. Results are graphically depicted with various parameters.
The watersheds are functional geographical areas that integrate a variety of environmental and ecological processes and human impacts on landscapes. Geographical assessments using GIS recognize the relationship between interdependence of resources and ecological/environmental components in watersheds. They are useful methodology for viable long term natural resource management. This paper performs through the using hydrological analyses, landscape ecological analyses, remote sensing, and GIS. Indicators are items or measures that represent key components of the small watersheds, and they are developed to be evaluated. Some indicators are described that they represent watershed condition and trend as well as focus on physical, biological and chemical properties of small watershed. Also, ecological functions such as stability, resilience, and sensitivity are inferred from them. The model implemented in GIS allows to reflect the ecological and hydrological functioning of watershed. Methodology from image analysis, landscape ecological analysis, spatial interpolation, and numerical process modeling are integrated within GIS to provide assessment for eco-logical/environmental condition. Results are described from the small watershed of Gwynns Falls in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, Maryland, an area of about 66.5 square miles. The small watershed within Gwynns Falls watershed are subject to a number of land-use. But it is predominantly urban, with significantly lesser amounts of forest and agriculture. The increasing urbanization is ass-coiated with ecological/environmental impacts and citizen conflicts.
It is common to quantify the concept of interest in the social and human sciences to test a research hypothesis. In such a case, it is strongly recommended to investigate if the procedure is appropriately designed and implemented according the research purpose since the quantification procedure highly affects the result of statistical analysis. In this work, we propose a visualization tool which enables us to check the construct validity of a measurement tool (such a questionnaire) in a concise and convenient way based on a penalized factor analysis model. We illustrate our method with numerical simulation and real data analysis.
