  • A case of a 72-year-old Korean male with herpes zoster ophthalmicus revealed. He was treated with Korean-Western cooperative treatment. We used the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) to evaluate forehead and eye pain. Pain was improved after the administration of Korean medical treatments and disappeared after eight days. Korean-Western cooperative treatment may be effective in treating acute herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

  • Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system characterized by optic neuritis and longitudinally extensive myelitis. Painful tonic spasm is a common complication of NMO, but there have been no reports about it in Korean medicine studies. In this case, we treated a 53-year-old woman diagnosed with NMO with paraplegia, painful tonic spasm, and decreased visual acuity using Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and moxibustion. We measured changes in clinical symptoms using the manual muscle testing (MMT), the numeric rating scale (NRS), the modified Barthel Index (MBI), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). After treatment, clinical symptoms were improved. The results indicate that Korean medicine treatment may be effective in the treatment of an NMO patient with paraplegia and painful tonic spasm.

  • Effrctive analgesia after elective thoracotomy can be provided by continuous extrapleural intercostal nerve block. This study was designed to prove the effectiveness of continuous extrapleural intercostal nerve block. Twenty patients undergoing elective thoracotomy were randomized into two groups. Group I received lumbar epidural block[N=10] and group II received continuous extrapleural intercostal nerve block[N=10]. Postoperative pain relief was assessed on Numeric Rating Scale[NRS] and recovery of pulmonary function was assessed by coparison of preoperatrive and postoperative FVC[Forced Vital Capacity], FEV1[Forced expiratory Volume in 1 second], VC[Vital Capacity]. Arterial blood gas analysis[ABGA], vital signs and amount of additive analgesics were compared also. No significant difference was observed between the groups concerning these parameters mentioned above. Systemic complications, such as urinary retention[2/10] and weakness of lower extremity[2/10], occurred in group I but no complication occurred in group II. We conclude that continuous extrapleural intercostal nerve block is as effective as epidural block in pain relief and restoration of pulmonary mechanics with fewer comlications. Also because of it`s ease and safetiness, this must be considered as a substitute of epidural block in routine use for thoracotomy pain relief.

  • Foot drop due to lumbar disc herniation is perceived to be an indication for surgery. A 44-year-old male presented with motor deficit in left ankle dorsiflexion along with radiating pain and paraesthesia. Motion Style Acupuncture Therapy (MSAT) was administered on the left side every other day. Acupuncture and Chuna were performed daily. Herbal medicine was taken 3 times a day. His symptoms rapidly improved throughout treatment, verified by decreased Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), increased 5-level EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D-5L) scores, and improved motor grades. We suggest that a combination of MSAT with traditional Korean medicine could be a favorable option for foot drop in LDH patients in terms of rapid pain reduction and the improvement of quality of life.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment on postmenopausal syndrome. Methods: The patient with postmenopausal syndrome with palpitation was treated with Korean medicine treatment during 14 days of hospitalization. The patient received Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion. The effect of treatment on postmenopausal syndrome was evaluated through the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and questionnaire. Palpitation and arrhythmia was evaluated by Electrocardiogram (ECG) and manual pulse diagnosis three times a day. Result: After the treatment, the clinical postmenopausal symptoms of palpitation and hot flush were improved. Also, ECG's result was improved ventricular premature contraction to normal ECG. Conclusions: This case report proved that the Korean medicine treatment may be effective for improving postmenopausal syndrome with palpitation and hot flush. However, further clinical study is needed in the future to prove the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment for postmenopausal syndrome with palpitation and hot flush.

  • Objective: This case report represented that Korean traditional medicine therapies can make effective results for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy(CIPN) patients. Methods: A 63-year-old female patient has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer(Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor). Total excision of uterus and appendages was operated, and Bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin combination therapy was applied. After three cycles of chemotherapy, the severe side effects of neutropenia and CIPN occurred. Chemotherapy was terminated, but numbness and tingling pains in the limbs persisted for several months. We provided Korean medicine treatments including herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, moxibustion and physiotherapies. Results: After treatments, the numbness and pain were reduced from 10 to 1 in hand and 6 to 0 on the numeric rating scale(NRS). Functional assessment of cancer therapy/Gynecologic oncology group neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-NTX) score was improved from 58 to 97. Conclusion: According to these results, Korean medicine treatments could be considered effective for CIPN. Prospective studies are needed to confirm and expand these findings.

  • Posterior ankle impingement syndrome is one of the impingement syndromes characterized by posterior ankle pain that occurs during forced plantar flexion. This report presents a case of a 48-year-old PAIS patient with os trigonum syndrome accompanied by tenosynovitis of flexor hallucis longus. She was treated with complex Korean medicine to a good effect. The Numeric Rating Scale and the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level were used to measure the impact of Korean medicine on the patient's pain and quality of life. Decreased NRS and increased EQ-5D-5L scores reflected improvement in her symptoms within 25 days. This study suggests complex Korean medicine treatment for PAIS may be beneficial for alleviating pain and improving quality of life.
