  • Sixteen species of Asterocheres collected from the southern and eastern coasts of Korea are recorded. Two species are redescriptions-Asterocheres aesthetes Ho, 1984 and A. siphonatus Giesbrecht, 1897. The remaining 14 new species described are A. geminus n. sp., A. processus n. sp., A. culicis n. sp., A. eurychelatus n. sp., A. scutellatus n. sp., A. spiniventer n. sp., A. fici n. sp., A. serratus n. sp., A. tridentatus n. sp., A. nodulosus n. sp., A. tetraodontis n. sp., A. dokdoicus n. sp., A. exilis n. sp., and A. zodius n. sp. These new species are compared with other known species of the genus mainly based on the character states of 17 selected characters. These characters include the length/width ratios of the caudal ramus and genital double-somite, the number of postgenital lateral setules or spinules on the genital double-somite of the female, the number of segments of the antennule of both sexes, the position of aesthetasc on antennular segments in the female, the relative length of terminal claw of the antenna, the relative length of the oral siphon, the number of segments and the relative length of the mandibular palp, the presence or absence of inner coxal seta on legs 1 and 4, the relative lengths of setae on the exopod of female leg 5, the presence or absence of sexual dimorphisms of swimming legs, and the presence or absence of a secondary aesthetasc on the male antennule. A key to 22 species of Asterocheres known in Korea waters is provided.

  • The Korean peninsula has diverse habitats and so would be expected to have a rich millipede fauna because of its location between the Paleoarctic and Oriental regions. To facilitate studies on millipedes, this work provides an updated list and discussion of Korean millipedes. A total of 69 species had been recorded up to 2010, but since then no new species have been reported. Among 69 species, 49 are endemic to the Korean peninsula. From 1950 to the present, an average of only seven new species from the Korean peninsula has been described per decade. This number does not reflect the biodiversity of millipedes in Korea, especially when compared to Taiwan, which has only one-third the area of the Korean peninsula, but from which a greater number of millipede species have been recorded (75 vs. 69 species). Japan has twofold the land area of the Korean peninsula, and an almost threefold higher number of millipede species. Further, more-intensive surveys will likely result in identification of more millipede species in the Korean peninsula.

  • Seasonal variation of abundance and species composition of ichthyoplankton were studied in the coastal water off Tongyoung, Korea. Monthly samples were collected using a ring net which were towed horizontally at 4 different stations from March, 1998 to February, 1999. A total of 74 species representing 35 families and 8 orders were found. Of these species 40 species (17 families) were Perciformes. Of the fish larvae couected Engraulis japonicus, Repomucenus sp., Parablennius yatabei, Synechogobius hasta, and Tridentiger sp. were the dominant species representing $80.6\%$ in total number of individuals. The number of species was highest in August and lowest in December; number of individuals was highest in May and lowest in November. The diversity index (Shannon and Wiener Index) was highest in march, and lowest in December.

  • We propose appropriate criteria for obtaining fish species data and number of learning data, as well as for selecting the most appropriate convolutional neural network (CNN) to efficiently classify exotic invasive fish species for their extermination. The acquisition of large amounts of fish species data for CNN learning is subject to several constraints. To solve these problems, we acquired a large number of fish images for various fish species in a laboratory environment, rather than a natural environment. We then converted the obtained fish images into fish images acquired in different natural environments through simple image synthesis to obtain the image data of the fish species. We used the images of largemouth bass and bluegill captured at a pond as test data to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, to classify the exotic invasive fish species accurately, we evaluated the trained CNNs in terms of classification performance, processing time, and the number of data; consequently, we proposed a method to select the most effective CNN.

  • The fishways on Namdae-cheon and Osib-cheon and the use of migratory fishes were investifated from July 1998 through Jung 1999. There are three types of fishways on these rivers. Those are baffled fishways, fish ladder, and fish ladder with gabion. Namdae-cheon has 7 baffled fishways and 19 fish ladder, and Osib-cheon has only fish ladder with gaboin. On Namdae-cheon 1,195 fishes of 24 species were collected. Amog these fishes 241 fishes of 9 species were anadromous fishes occupying 38% in species and 19% in number. On Osib-cheon 1,015 fishes of 24 species were collected. Among these fishes 240 fishes of 5 species were anadromous fishes occupying 21% in species and 24% in number. On Namdae-cheon the species number and auundance decreased gradually upstream. The poor structure of fishways seems to have worked as an obstacle to the upstream migration of fishes on Namdae-cheon. On Osib-cheon all the observed fish species except three -spined stickleback(Gasterosteus aculeatus aculeatus) which stay and spawn around downstream of river could migrate upstream. The good structure of fishways on this river is thought to have helped upstream fish migration.

  • This study is to find out how well elementary school gardens work as places of observation learning. We compared the tree species planted in elementary school gardens with those which appeared in the science textbooks of the 7th Korean National Curriculum. The number of tree species are 60 throughout all the grades, specifically; 43 in the third grade, 22 in the fifth grade, 16 in the first grade, 15 in the second grade, 8 in the sixth grade, and 5 in the fourth grade, respectively. Their frequency of appearance (hereafter referred to as 'appearance frequency') throughout all the grades is 175, and the maximum frequency is 62 in the third grade. Of particular note is the fact that the appearance frequency in one grade was very high, meaning that a repeat study will not be conducted. The total number of tree species counted in the study was 13,028 and consisted of 167 species in 52 families. Only 23% of the total planted tree species, that is, 38 tree species appeared in the textbooks, so the ratio of the practical usage of school gardens was revealed to be low. In the school gardens, there are only an average of about 16 tree species per school. The fewest number of species in one school was 9 and the most was 22. The native species were 74 and the non-native species were 93. This means that almost all the planted species do not relate to observation learning in the textbooks. The 22 tree species among 60 species in the textbooks were not planted in the gardens. In conclusion, the degree of utilization of almost all the elementary school gardens examined during this investigation was very low.

  • A study on the ichthyoplankton assemblage was conducted around Dokdo in the East Sea in September 1999 and May 2000. Sixteen species of fish larvae including eggs were collected during the surveys. Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) eggs and larvae were comprised of 2.0% and 94.5% of total samples in number, respectively. Muller's pearlside (Maurolicus muelleri) eggs and larvae were comprised of 95.0% and 3.2%, respectively. The other species mostly composed of warm water species were less than 2% of total samples in number. The number of species and abundance of the fish lawae and eggs were higher in September than in May. Although there were limited data on the ichthyoplankton around Dokdo in summer and winter, this study area seems to be used for the spawning or nursery ground of fishes.
