The paper summarizes the irradiation test and post-irradiation examination (PIE) data for the U-Mo low-enriched fuel that was irradiated in the MIR reactor under the RERTR Program. The PIE data were analyzed for both full-size fuel rods and mini-rods with atomized powder dispersed in Al matrix as well as with additions of 2%, 5% and 13% of silicon in the matrix and ZrN protective coating on the fuel particles. The full-size fuel rods were irradiated up to an average burnup of ${\sim}60%^{235}U$; the mini-rods were irradiated to an average burnup of ${\sim}85%^{235}U$. The presented data show a significant increase of the void fraction in the U-Mo alloy as the U-235 burnup rises from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%. The effect of irradiation test conditions and U-235 burnup were analyzed with regard to the formation of an interaction layer between the matrix and fuel particles as well as generation of porosity in the U-Mo alloy. Shown here are changes in distribution of U fission products as the U-235 burnup increases from ~ 40% up to ~ 85%.

Antimony profiles by MeV implantation are measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and spreading resistance (SR). The moments of SIMS and simulated profiles are calculated and compared for the exact range in MeV energy. SRIM, DUPEX, ICECREM, and TSUPREM4 simulation programs are used for the calculation of range 1D, 2D. SRIM is a Monte Carlo simulation program and different inter-atomic potentials can be used for the calculation of nuclear stopping power cross-section (Sn) and range moments. Nevertheless, the range parameters were not influenced from nuclear stopping power in MeV. Through the modification of electronic stopping power cross-section (Se), the results of simulation are remarkably improved and matched very well with SIMS data. The values of electronic stopping power are optimized for Sb high energy implantation. For the electrical activation, Sb implanted samples are annealed under $N_2$ and $O_2$ ambient. Finally, Oxidation retard diffusion(ORD) effect of Sb implanted sample are demonstrated by SR measurements and ICECREM simulation.

To evaluate the structural integrity of the nuclear seismic category IIA bellows seal 2" globe valve under the seismic service conditions the seismic analysis was performed in accordance with ASME, section III, ND-3500, 1989 edition. The finite element computer program, ANSYS, Version 10.0, is used to perform both a mode frequency analysis and an equivalent static seismic analysis of the valve assembly. The mode frequency analysis results show the fundamental natural frequency is greater than 33 Hz and does not exist in seismic range, thus justifying the use of the static analysis. The stresses resulted from various loadings and their combinations are within the allowable limits specified in the above mentioned ASME code. The results of the seismic evaluation fully satisfied the structural acceptance criteria of the ASME code. Accordingly the structural integrity on the globe valve was proved.
The DYLAM-3 code which overcomes the limitation of event tree/fault tree was applied to LOOP (Loss of Off-site Power) in the mid-loop operation employing HEPs (Human Error Probabilities) supplied by the ASEP (Accident Sequence Evaluation Program) and the SEPLOT (Systematic Evaluation Procedure for Low power/shutdown Operation Task) procedure in this study. Thus the time history of core uncovery frequency during the mid-loop operation was obtained. The sensitivity calculations in the operator's actions to prevent core uncovery under LOOP in the mid-loop operation were carried out. The analysis using the time dependent HEP was performed on the primary feed & bleed which has the most significant effect on core uncovery frequency. As the result, the increment of frequency is shown after 200 minutes duration of simulation conditions. This signifies the possibility of increment in risk after 200 minutes. The primary feed & bleed showed the greatest impact on core uncovery frequency and the recovery of the SCS (Shutdown Cooling System) showed the least impact. Therefore the efforts should be taken on the primary feed & bleed to reduce the core uncovery frequency in the mid-loop operation. And the capability of DYLAM-3 in applying to the time dependent concerns could be demonstrated.

A natural analogue study has been performed for the Koongarra uranium ore deposit in Australia as an international agreement of the Analogue Studies in the Alligator Rivers Region (ASARR). Rocks obtained from the Koongarra deposit, Northern Territory of Australia, were examined in order to understand uranium migration processes of primary and secondary ore-body in both weathered and unweathered zones. Total alpha activities of rock samples were measured to compare the relative amount of uranium in the sample. Uranium distributions have been investigated by means of both the alpha-autoradiography and the fission track registration technique after irradiation in a flux of thermal neutrons (~10$\times$$10^{13}$nㆍ$cm^{-2}$ㆍs$^{-1}$) for 2 minutes. The mineral phases corresponding to the registered alpha-tracks and fission tracks were identified by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis (EPMA). Uranium was found mostly inside of the fracture of the quartzite and its mineral phase was identified as sklodowskite. The mineral phase associated with high uranium concentration was found as illeminite by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as EPMA.
Shaft stations of underground uranium mines in China are not only utilized as waiting space for loaded mine-cars queuing to be hoisted but also as the principal channel for fresh air taken to working places. Therefore, assessment of how mine-car queuing processes affect shaft station radon concentration was carried out. Queuing network of mine-cars has been analyzed in an underground uranium mine, located in Quzhou, Zhejiang province of Eastern China. On the basis of mathematical analysis of the queue network, a MATLAB-based quasi-random number generating program utilizing Monte-Carlo methods was worked out. Extensive simulations were then implemented via MATALB operating on a DELL PC. Thereafter, theoretical calculations and field measurements of shaft station radon concentrations for several working conditions were performed. The queuing performance measures of interest, like average queuing length and waiting time, were found to be significantly affected by the utilization rate (positively correlated). However, even with respect to the "worst case", the shaft station radon concentration was always lower than $200Bq/m^3$. The model predictions were compared with the measuring results, and a satisfactory agreement was noted. Under current working conditions, queuing-induced variations of shaft station radon concentration of the study mine are not remarkable.
In this study, an underwater radiation detector was built using a GAGG(Ce) scintillator and silicon photomultiplier to establish an underwater radiation exposure monitoring system. The GAGG(Ce) scintillator is suitable for small radiation detectors as it strongly absorbs gamma rays and has a high light emission rate with no deliquescent properties. Additionally, the silicon photomultiplier is a light sensor with characteristics such as small size and low applied voltage. Further, a program and mobile app were developed to monitor the radiation coefficient values generated from the detector. According to the results of the evaluation of the characteristics of the underwater radiation monitoring system, when tested for its responsiveness to radiation intensity and reactivity, the system exhibited a coefficient of determination of at least 0.99 with respect to the radiation source distance. Additionally, when tested for its underwater environmental temperature dependence, the monitoring system exhibited an increase in the count rate up to a certain temperature because of the increasing dark current and a decrease in the count rate because of decreasing overvoltage. Extended studies based on the results of this study are expected to greatly contribute to immediate and continuing evaluation of the degree of radioactive contamination in underwater environments.

The mass attenuation coefficients (${\mu}/{\rho}$) of food waste samples (pomegranate peel, acorn cap, lemon peel, mandarin peel, pumpkin peel, grape peel, orange peel, pineapple peel, acorn peel and grape stalk) have been measured employing a Si(Li) detector at 13.92, 17.75, 20.78, 26.34 and 59.54 keV. Also, the theoretical values of the mass attenuation coefficients have been evaluated utilizing mixture rule from WinXCOM program. The results showed that the lemon peel has the highest values of ${\mu}/{\rho}$ among the selected samples. From the obtained mass attenuation coefficients, we determined some absorption parameters such as effective atomic number ($Z_{eff}$), electron density ($N_E$) and molar extinction coefficient (${\varepsilon}$). It was found that the $Z_{eff}$ values of all food wastes lie within the range of 4.034-7.595, whereas the $N_E$ of the studied food wastes was found to be in the range of $0.301-1.720{\times}10^{25}$ (electrons/g) for present energy region.

This paper describes a new mechanistic thermal conductivity model considering the heterogeneous microstructure of MOX fuel. Even though the thermal conductivities of MOX have been investigated numerously by experimental measurements and theoretical analyses, they show the large scattering making the performance analysis of MOX fuel difficult. Therefore, a thermal conductivity model that depends on the heterogeneous microstructure of MOX fuel has been developed by using a general two-phase thermal conductivity model. In order to apply this model for developing the thermal conductivity for heterogeneous MOX fuel, the fuel is assumed to consist of Purich particles and U02 matrix including Pu02 in solid solution. Since little relevant data on Purich particles is available, FIGARO and SiemensKWU results are only used to characterize the microstructure of unirradiated and irradiated fuel. Philliponneaus and HALDEN models are selected for the local thermal conductivities for Purich particles and matrix, respectively. Then by combining the two models, overall thermal conductivity of MOX fuel is obtained. The new proposed model estimates the MOX thermal conductivity about 10% less than the value of U02 fuel, which is in the range of MOX thermal conductivity from HALDEN. The developed thermal conductivity model has been incorporated into KAERIs fuel performance code, COSMOS, and then verified using the measured data in the FIGARO program. Comparison of predicted and measured temperatures shows the reasonable agreement within acceptable error bounds together with satisfactory results for the fission gas release and gap pressure.essure.
A safety assessment computer code CALM (Computer program of Assessment for LILW Management) is developed for the theoretical prediction of long-term safety of low-and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal. CALM is composed of three submodels, which are the resaturation model, the geosphere migration model, and the radiation dose model. For the verification of its usefulness, the safety assessment of an assumed waste repository is performed. The results show that the computer code, CALM developed through this study can be a useful tool for the safety assessment of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste repository.
