The cross flow turbine attracts more and more attention for its relatively wide operating range and simple structure. In this study, a novel type of micro cross flow turbine is developed for application to a step in an irrigational channel. The head of the turbine is only H=4.3m and the turbine inlet channel is open ducted type, which has barely been studied. The efficiency of the turbine with inlet open duct channel is relatively low. Therefore, a guide nozzle on the turbine inlet is attached to improve the performance of the turbine. The guide nozzle shapes are investigated to find the best shape for the turbine. The guide nozzle plays an important role on directing flow at the runner entry, and it also decreases the negative torque loss by reducing the pressure difference in Region 1. There is 12.5% of efficiency improvement by attaching a well shaped guide nozzle on the turbine inlet.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance and internal flow characteristics of a cross-flow type hydro turbine for wave power generation. The performance of the turbine is calculated with the variation of rotational speed for 4 types of the nozzle shape using a commercial CFD code. The results show that nozzle shape should be designed considering available head of the turbine. Best efficiencies of the turbine by 4 types of the nozzle shape do not change largely but overall performances varies mainly by the nozzle width. The output power of the cross-flow type hydro turbine changes considerably by the nozzle shape and a partial region of stage 2 in the runner blade passage produces maximum regional output power in comparison with the other runner blade passage areas.
For axial-type turbines which operate at partial admission, a performance prediction model is developed. In this study, losses generated within the turbine are classified to windage loss, expansion loss and mixing loss. The developed loss model is compared with experimental results. Particularly, if a turbine operates at a very low partial admission rate, a circular-type nozzle is more efficient than a rectangular-type nozzle. For this case, a performance prediction model is developed and an experiment is conducted with the circular-type nozzle. The predicted result is compared with the measured performance, and the developed model quite well agrees with the experimental results. So the developed model could be applied to predict the performance of axial-type turbines which operate at various partial admission rates or with different nozzle shape.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of multi-hole nozzle on the performance of small CRDI engine. Combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of engine were studied by using CFD simulation with ECFM-3Z combustion model. The conditions of simulation were varied with nozzle geometry, injection timing and injection quantity. In addition, the results were compared in terms of combustion pressure, rate of heat release, $NO_x$ and soot emissions. It was found that combustion pressure was increased when injection timing was advanced. The rate of heat release of 6 hole nozzle was higher than that of 12 hole nozzle since the quantity of fuel impinged at the bottom of piston rim was different under different injection timing conditions. In the case of $NO_x$ emission, 6 hole nozzle generated more $NO_x$ emission than 12 hole nozzle. On the other hand, in the case of soot emission, 12 hole nozzle showed higher value than 6 hole nozzle because injected fuel droplets from multi-hole nozzle were coalesced.
The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner was modified to enhance the power performance and to reduce the airflow-induced acoustic noise. The suction power efficiencies of the vacuum cleaner were measured for various nozzles; (1) original nozzle, (2) original nozzle with modified trench height, (3) original nozzle with modified connecting chamber, and (4) a combination of (2) and (3). In addition, the suction pressure and sound pressure level around the suction nozzle were measured to validate the reduction of acoustic noise. The power efficiency and mean suction pressure increased when the trench height of the suction nozzle was increased. This was attributed to the suppression of the flow separation in the suction channel. Modification of the connecting chamber in the original nozzle, which had an abrupt contraction from a rectangular chamber into a circular pipe, into a smooth converging contraction substantially improved the suction flow into the connecting pipe. When both modifications were applied simultaneously, the resulting suction nozzle was more effective from the viewpoints of aerodynamic power increase and sound pressure level reduction.
In general, flow entrainment of surrounding gas into a supersonic jet is caused by the pressure drop inside the jet and the shear actions between the jet and the surrounding gas. In the recent industrial applications, like supersonic ejector system or scramjet engine, the rapid mixing of two different gases is important in that it determines the whole performance of the flow system. However, the mixing performance of the conventional circular jet is very low because the shear actions are not enough. The supersonic jet discharging from a petal nozzle is known to enhance mixing effects with the surrounding gas because it produces strong longitudinal vortices due to the velocity differences from both the major and minor axes of petal nozzle. This study aims to enhance the mixing performance of the jet with surrounding gas by using the lobed petal nozzle. The jet flows from the petal nozzle are compared with those from the conventional circular nozzle. The petal nozzles employed are 4, 6, and 8 lobed shapes with a design Mach number of 1.7 each, and the circular nozzle has the same design Mach number. The pitot impact pressures are measured in detail to specify the jet flows. For flow visualization, the schlieren optical method is used. The experimental results reveal that the petal nozzle reduces the supersonic length of the supersonic jet, and leads to the improved mixing performance compared with the conventional circular jet.
The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of driving atomizing nozzle position, the slope of sludge entering tube and supplying air flow rate on the performance of sludge air dryer. This paper deals with optimization of the geometry of the atomizing nozzle for sludge drying using computational fluid dynamics and drying performance test using pilot air dryer. The air drying system was composed of the atomizing nozzle which made high-speed fluid field. dewatered cake was crushed at the high-speed zone as the first step and formed intto dried powder of sphere shape by the collision between particles at the circling zone. The CFD analysis results show when the slope of entering sludge tube is smaller, suction air amount is increased. It is shown that the developed atomizing nozzle is very excellent in the drying performance through pilot test.
