  • Longitudinal static stability and steady aerodynamic characteristics of wings flying over nonplanar ground surfaces (rail and channel) are investigated using the boundary-element method. For a channel with it's fence higher than the wing height, the lift and the nose-down pitching moment increase as the gap between the wingtip and the fence decreases. For a rail with it's width wider than the wing span, the lift and the nose-down pitching moment increase as the rail height decreases. Longitudinal static stability of a single wing flying over nonplanar surfaces is worse than the case of the flat ground. In case of tandem wings, longitudinal static stability of the wings flying over the channel is better than the case of the flat ground. It is believed that the present results can be applied to the conceptual design of high-speed ground transporters.

  • Recent high-speed trains around the world have achieved remarkable improvement in speed. In Korea, the new high-speed train with maximum speed of 400km/h has been developing through the 'Future High-Speed Rail System Project'. The improvement in train speed brings numerous aerodynamic problems such as strong aerodynamic resistance, noise, drastic pressure variation due to the crosswind or passing by, micro-pressure wave at tunnel exit, and so on. Especially, the nose shape of high-speed train is closely related to the most of the aerodynamic problems. Also the pantograph has to be considered for noise prevention and detachment problems. In this paper, the project, 'Research on the Aerodynamic Technology Advancement of the High-Speed EMU' is introduced briefly, which is one of the efforts for the speed improvement of the 'HEMU400x'. Finally, two main results of train nose and pantograph will be shown. First, the optimization of the cross-sectional area distribution of the high-speed train nose to reduce tunnel micro-pressure wave, and second, robust design optimization of the panhead shape of a pantograph.

  • In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using three-dimensional Euler equations. Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. Numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, length and the existence of a tunnel on the crossing event. Unsteady aerodynamic loads-a side force and a drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and analyzed. The side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and the drag force depends on tunnel existence. Also. a push-pull (i.e.impluse force) force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary to evaluate the stability of high speed multi-car trains. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for simulating the unsteady flow fields induced by bodies in relative motion.

  • In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other at the speed of 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using the three-dimensional Euler equations. The Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena properly. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. The numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, the train length and the existence of tunnel when the crossing event occur. Unsteady aerodynamic loads side force and drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and anlayzed. It is found that the strength of the side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and that of drag force on tunnel existence. And it is observed that the push-pull like impulsive force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary for the evaluation of the stability of the high speed multi-car train. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for the simulation of unsteady flow field induced by the bodies in the relative motion.

  • In this paper, the shapes of windsurfing boards are proposed for the promotion of their public utilization. Initially, we investigated the principal dimensions of 1,500 windsurfing boards that were produced in the last six years to categorize the characteristics of the boards. Then, model tests were performed in a circulating water channel to determine the resistance characteristics and the flow phenomena, including the wetness of the decks. After analyzing the principal dimensions and the results of the tests of existing windsurfing boards, we proposed four public board shapes that resulted from changing the shapes of the nose and rail and protecting the deck of free-ride boards from wetness. Finally, we predicted the performance of the four proposed windsurfing boards.

  • Railroad is well known for eco-friendly transportation system. But, for past few decades, there might be happened many contamination acts in railway facility sites. Industrial and municipal solid wastes produced to maintain and fix trains were dumped to underground of railroad depot area. To develop and reconstruct this area, we should remediate the contaminated soil and ground water. This study was conducted to evaluate the soil pollution status of railroad depot and propose the optimum remediation processes. Our investigation showed that main pollutants sources were TPH and some heavy metals from the dump site. The surveying results for the soil under rail track and crossing nose areas showed TPH contamination from crossing nose area causing lubricant agent. It could be use and rehabilitate the railroad facility areas to an intended purpose with an application of well designed in-situ and ex-situ remediation processes.

  • When a vehicle passes through a turnout, it is necessary for the changes in lateral force to be minimized to ensure the safe running of the vehicle. Therefore, the analysis of the interaction between the vehicle and the turnout is crucial for estimating the lateral force and the derailment coefficient on the turnout. In this paper, the effect of the variation of section shape on the running safety of a vehicle was investigated by changing the shape of the point part and the crossing part. The tongue rail length of the point part and nose rail height of the crossing part of an F10/F12 turnout were changed, and the running safety of the vehicle was analyzed.
