  • To assess the risk of genetically modified (GM) rice on the agricultural ecosystem, agronomic characteristics, pollen longevity and outcrossing rate between GM (Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their wild types and female parents) varieties were investigated using the bar gene as a tracer marker in paddy field. The agronomic characteristics of two GM rice were similar to their female-parents (non-GM rice) except heading date and 1,000 grain weight of Iksan 483, and they did not show a difference by the introgression of the bar gene as the genetic traits of rice varieties. Pollen viability was more than 90% just after shedding, and it was rapidly decreased below 50% at 5 minutes after shedding both GM and non-GM varieties. The Pollen longevity was lost after 30 minutes of anthesis. When the distance of gene flow from GM to non-GM rice detected to 6 m from the edge of GM rice plant, the maximum distance of pollen dispersal was 4.5m and 3.9m in Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, respectively, and that was increased in order of west, south, east, and north to the dominant wind direction, west-south. Mean outcrossing rate was very low as 0.003 and 0.001% within 1.5 m from the edge of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, and the GM hybrids by the pollen dispersal did not detected over 4.5 m from the edge of GM rice plant. The results may help to establish the strategy which reduce the risk of pollen-mediated gene flow between GM and non-GM rice.

  • In order to get abundant germplasm for develop- ing new corn varieties, major morphological characteristics of ear were evaluated with a total of 210 Korean indigenous maize lines collected from various parts of Pusan City and Kyungnam Province, Korea. The ear shape of Korean indigenous maize was mainly cone type or similar to cone type. Cylinder type or similar to cylinder type of corn was collected from the north-west mountainous. region of Kyungnam Province, whereas cone type or similar to cone type was collected from the plain region. In the kernel colors of each ear, ears with mono colored kernels were 55.7% of the total, and ears with two to four mixed colors were 44.3%. Among the mono colored ears, brown was the most abundant at 16.8%. There was an average of 12∼14 rows per ear. Kernal rows per ear varied from 8∼20. Waxy corn was predominant at 67.2%, mixed corn with waxy kernel and common kernel at 11.0%, and common corn at 21.8%.

  • The moss flora and it's geoecological study were made on Mt. Odae which is situated in the easterm part(37$^{\circ}$43'N. Lat., 128$^{\circ}$30' E. Long) of Korea. The total number ofmosses collected on Mt. Odae in the autumn of 1960 is 50 species, 1 varieties and 1 subspecies, belonging to 23 families. For climate index, Warmth index and Humidity index were calculaterd on Mt. Odae. From the result, it was known that the climate of Mt. Odae is Humid temperate climate and that it's vegetation zone is Deciduous broad-leaf forest zone. Moss Quotient of this mountain is 1.21 and it indicates that the plant climate of Mt. Odae is Hemicryptophytic climate. The moss flora of this mountain was discussed from the pnytogeographical point of view. The flora consists of the following elements: Holarctic element : 20 species (38.5%) North Pacific element: 1 (1.9%) Cosmopolian element: 6 (11.6%) Tropical element: 1 (1.9%) East Asiatic element: 12 (23.05%) Korean-Japan element: 12 (23.05%) Coefficient of closeness was also calculated between the moss flora of Mt. Odae and that of Mt. Sulak and Mt. Kwanak. It was known, therefore, that the flora relation between Mt. Odae and the Mt. Sulak was closer than that between Mt. Odae and Mt. Kwanak.

  • Several volcanics are found within the Tertiary sedimentary basins, southeastern part of Korea. The sedimentary basins have been interpreted to have formed in the framework of separation of the East Sea. The volcanics are Eocene or Early and Middle Miocene in ages, showing a distincetve chronological gap, and show mafic and silicic (bimodal) in composotion. The Miocene volcanics were regionally and stratigraphically grouped into two varieties along the Hyeongsan fault; younger volcanics (13.6-15.2 Ma, K) from the north of the fault, erupted after the opening of the East Sea, and older volcanics (16.2-21.1 Ma) from the south of the fault. • The current status of geographical distribution range of Deutzia paniculata, one of the korean endemic plants, was investigated based on the species distribution information. The information of the geographical range used for analysis includes all the published references to the distribution of D. paniculata, herbarium specimens in Korea National Arboretum (KH) including its online database: http://www.nature.go.kr, and field research. Although, D. paniculata was firstly recorded in Wonsan, Hamgyeongnam-do, North Korea, this research revelaved that D. paniculata is mainly distributed in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, southern regions of the Korean Peninsula. According to the distribution map, this species was estimated on distribution edge of in Anyang region of Gyeonggi-do, Mt. Naejang of Jeollabuk-do and Mt. Taebaek of Gwangwon-do on the distribution edge. However, it was made use of intensive field survey to identify the natural population of the species in these regions. D. paniculata habitat was mainly distributed between 290 meters and 491 meters in altitude, but it was also found ranged from 936 to 959 meters in Gun-wi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The distribution slope was 5° to 35° and the north, N, NE and NW in the aspect. The flora of vascular plants in D. paniculata habitats was listed in 137 taxa: 54 families, 103 genera, 120 species, 2 subspecies, 12 varieties and 3 forms while Korean endemic plants were found in three taxa, Stewartia koreana, Weigela subsessilis and D. Paniculata. Based on a collection of non-biological environment and biological environment data, D. paniculata population were discussed to make strategy and basic research methods for sustainable preservation.
