  • This study measured speech intelligibility in relation to the vowel space area and the perception of the listener through acoustic analysis of children who had received cochlear implants. It also provided basic data in the evaluation of speech intelligibility by analyzing the correlation between the vowel space area and speech intelligibility. As a research method, the vowel space area was analyzed by obtaining the value of $F_1$, $F_2$ in children three years after receiving cochlear implants, and compared them to normal children by measuring speech intelligibility through interval scaling. A product-moment correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the correlation. Results showed that the vowel space area of the children who had received cochlear implants was significantly different from that of the normal children, though their speech intelligibility showed similar points to those of the normal children. The results of the correlation analysis on the vowel space area and speech intelligibility showed no significant correlation. Therefore, the period of improving intelligibility after receiving cochlear implants and the objective standards of the vowel space area could be established. In addition, the acoustic rating was required to increase the accuracy of the objective measurement in the evaluation of speech intelligibility.

  • The main objective of this study are to propose two methods that would be a comprehensive measure of evaluation for non-normal process capability with Beta distributions. First method is introduced using process capability index $C_{psk}$ by the Pearson system and Johnson system. The Pearson system and the Johnson System selected for process capability index calculation have a equivalent result of this study that the ranking of the seven indices in terms of sensitivity to departure of the process median from the target value from the most sensitive one up to the least sensitive are $C^{*}_{pm}$ , $C_{psk}$ , $C_{s}$ , $C_{pmk}$ , $C_{pm}$ , $C_{pk}$ , $C_{p}$ . Second method show using the percentage nonconforming by the Pearson, Johnson and Burr functions. In thus study, we find that the Pearson system and the Burr system are a reasonable method to estimate percentage nonconforming. But, the exact procedure for deriving this estimate will be based on Beta distribution. Accordingly, if a process is not normally distributed , but normal-based techniques are used serious errors can result.

  • Introduction: To correct abnormal occlusal plane by orthognathic surgery, we need to have clear criteria for therapeutic occlusal plane. Authors introduced the concept of individualized ideal occlusal plane(Y-plane), which is determined by the size and form of the mandible, and the ideal incisor tip considering upper and lower lip. Authors studied the following to verify if the actual occlusal plane of the patients with optimal jaw relationship corresponds with the individualized ideal occlusal plane. Patients: We reviewed 44 patients who have normal occlusion visitied in the Dept. of orthodontics, Pundang CHA hospital. Methods: We evaluated if there are agreement between individualized ideal occlusal plane(Y plane) and occlusal plane of actual patients. And we confirmed if tested group has a normal face by measuring FABA, FMA, AB-LOP. Results: There were no significant differences of FABA, FMA, AB-LOP, Mo-Y plane between male and female. FABA, FMA and AB-LOP were included in the normal value. Average distance of Mo-Y plane was $0.75{\pm}0.78mm$. Conclusion: Individualized ideal occlusal plane may be applied to orthognathic surgery.

  • To investigate the correlation between college women's energy intake and body fat percentage, this study was undertaken with 116 college women aged 19-24 years. The subjects were 20.9 years old on the average, and mean height and weight was 161.3 cm, 51.2 kg. Blood pressures were 112.4 mm Hg(systolic pressure), 70.2 mmHg(diastolic pressure). The number of pulse was 75.5 count/min. The energy intake and percent body fat were examined. The average intake of energy was 7652kcal/day(82.3% of RDA), which was lower than the recommended amount. It was similar to the level of energy intake of Korean women. BMI was 19.7 and body fat percent was 24.4%, so they appeared plump. According to BMI, 43.1% of subjects was grouped into normal, 56.9% was thin ; there was no difference between groups in age and stature. Also, normal group(27.1%) shoed significantly higher body fat percent(27.1%) than thin group(22.3%). But, body fat percent of thin group according to BMI was shown normal. Therefore, it may be thought that BMI is unsuitable indicator in this study. As a result of analyzing the correlation between body-measuring value and food intake, body fat percent against body weight and BMI was significant at the level p<0.001, but thee was no significant correlation with food intake. Therefore, it is desirable to recommend a healthful dietary lifestyle and activities for young women who want to reduce body weight due to excessive concerns regarding their outward figure.

  • A laryngograph was developed to measure the open and closed movements of vocal folds in our laboratory. This study attempted to evaluate its performance by comparing its glottal data with that of the original laryngograph. Ten normal Korean adults Participated in the experiment. Each subject produced a sustained vowel /a/ for about five seconds. This study compared f0 values, contact quotients of the duration of closed vocal folds over one glottal pulse, and area quotients of the closed over open vocal folds derived from glottal waves using both the original and new laryngographs. Results showed that the mean and standard deviation of the two laryngographs were almost comparable with a correlation coefficient 0.662 but minor systematic shift below those of the original laryngograph was observed. The absolute mean difference converged into 1 Hz, which indicates a possibility of adopting some threshold of rejecting inappropriate pitch values beyond a threshold value. The contact quotient of the normal subjects came out slightly over the 50% in a citation speech. Finally, the area quotient converged into 1. We will pursue further studies on the abnormal patients in the future.

  • Many control techniques have been proposed in order to improve the control performance of the control system. The degree of freedom on control in the control system is decided by the number of the closed-loop transfer function which can adjust independently. The controller design scheme with two degrees of freedom(TDOF) is extensively used for securing the good control performance to trace a desired value and reject disturbance. In this paper, PID controller is used by controller with TDOF and the design method for control system with TDOF is proposed by the normal method. Using the coefficients of the transfer function of the plant, the transfer function of the control system is normalized by the proposed design method and the parameters of the controller are determined. The control system with the TDOF is constructed by using this method. Through the simulation results, the usefulness of the proposed algorithm is proved.

  • Nonlinear normal mode (NNM) vibration, in a nonlinear dual mass Hamiltonian system, which has 6th order homogeneous polynomial as a nonlinear term, is studied in this paper. The existence, bifurcation, and the orbital stability of periodic motions are to be studied in the phase space. In order to find the analytic expression of the invariant curves in the Poincare Map, which is a mapping of a phase trajectory onto 2 dimensional surface in 4 dimensional phase space, Whittaker's Adelphic Integral, instead of the direct integration of the equations of motion or the Birkhotf-Gustavson (B-G) canonical transformation, is derived for small value of energy. It is revealed that the integral of motion by Adelphic Integral is essentially consistent with the one obtained from the B-G transformation method. The resulting expression of the invariant curves can be used for analyzing the behavior of NNM vibration in the Poincare Map.

  • We investigated differences in ventricular and hippocampal volumes between CSF tap test (CSFTT) responders and non-responders in idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) patients and compared these parameters in INPH patients with that of age- and gender-matched healthy controls. We also evaluated relationships between ventricular and hippocampal volumes and clinical profiles in INPH patients. We enrolled 48 patients with INPH and 29 healthy controls. Ventricular and hippocampal volumes were measured on MRI, including 3-dimensional volumetric images. INPH patients, when compared to healthy controls, had significantly larger ventricular and smaller hippocampal volumes. No difference in ventricular and hippocampal volumes was found between CSFTT responders and non-responders in INPH patients. And hippocampal volumes showed significant negative correlations with Clinical Dementia Rating Scale scores, INPH grading scale cognitive scores, Timed Up and Go Test scores, and Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor scores in INPH patients. Volumetric assessment of ventricular and hippocampal regions may have no predictive value in differentiating between CSFTT responders and non-responders in INPH patients. Our findings may help us understand the potential pathophysiology of unique symptoms associated with INPH.

  • In this study, we investigate the predictability of intraseasonal monthly temperature and precipitation variations using hindcast datasets from eight global circulation models participating in the operational multi-model ensemble (MME) seasonal prediction system of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center for the 1983~2010 period. These intraseasonal monthly variations are defined by categorical deterministic analysis. The monthly temperature and precipitation are categorized into above normal (AN), near normal (NN), and below normal (BN) based on the σ-value ± 0.43 after standardization. The nine patterns of intraseasonal monthly variation are defined by considering the changing pattern of the monthly categories for the three consecutive months. A deterministic and a probabilistic analysis are used to define intraseasonal monthly variation for the multi-model consisting of numerous ensemble members. The results show that a pattern (pattern 7), which has the same monthly categories in three consecutive months, is the most frequently occurring pattern in observation regardless of the seasons and variables. Meanwhile, the patterns (e.g., patterns 8 and 9) that have consistently increasing or decreasing trends in three consecutive months, such as BN-NN-AN or AN-NN-BN, occur rarely in observation. The MME and eight individual models generally capture pattern 7 well but rarely capture patterns 8 and 9.

  • Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of internal abdominis pressure(normal, hollowing and bracing) on trunk muscle activity during one leg bridge exercise. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Thirteen healthy adults (9 men and 4 women) were instructed to perform Internal abdominal pressure(IAP) control(Normal, Hollowing, Bracing) during one leg bridge. Electromyography (EMG) data (% Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contraction, MVIC) were recorded three times on both sides of the participant's Internal Oblique(IO), Effector Spinae(ES), and Multifidus(MF) muscles and the average value was analyzed. Results: As a result, Abdominal bracing one leg bridge (BOLB) group and Abdominal hollowing one leg bridge (HOLB) group showed significantly increased muscle activation of bilateral internal oblique, erector spinae and multifidus activation compared to the Normal one leg bridge (NOLB) group (p<0.05). Abdominal hollowing one leg bridge (HOLB) group had a significant difference in bilateral Internal oblique muscle activation in compared to the NOLB group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Bilateral internal oblique, erector spinae, and multifidus muscles activation in healthy adults at one leg bridge exercise showed greater activation at abdominal bracing. Therefore, in this study, IAP control can be used as an indicator of choice to the dysfunction with trunk muscle weakness and corrective exercise subject's situation when the goal is to activate the trunk muscles by performing one leg bridge.
