This paper mainly discusses the influence of the aggregate properties including grading, shape, content and distribution on the chloride diffusion coefficient, as well as the initiation time of steel corrosion from a probabilistic point of view. Towards this goal, a simulation method of random aggregate structure (RAS) based on elliptical particles and a procedure of finite element analysis (FEA) at meso-scale are firstly developed to perform the analysis. Next, the chloride diffusion coefficient ratio between concrete and cement paste $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is chosen as the index to represent the effect of aggregates on the chloride diffusion process. Identification of the random distribution of this index demonstrates that it can be viewed as actually having a normal distribution. After that, the effect of aggregates on $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is comprehensively studied, showing that the appropriate properties of aggregates should be decided by both of the average and the deviation of $D_{app}/D_{cp}$. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the application of this mesoscopic method in predicting the initiation time of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The mesoscopic probabilistic method developed in this paper can not only provide more reliable evidences on the proper grading and shape of aggregates, but also play an important role in the probability-based design method.
The functionally graded beam (FGB) is investigated in this study on both dynamic and static loading in case of resting on a soil medium rather than on the usual Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation. The powerful ABAQUS software was used to model the problem applying finite element method. In the present study, two different soil models are taken into account. In the first model, the soil is assumed to be an elastic plane stress medium. In the second soil model, the Drucker-Prager yield criterion, which is one of the most well-known elastic-perfectly plastic constitutive models, is used for modelling the soil medium. The results are shown to evaluate the effects of the different soil models, stiffness values of the elastic soil medium on the normal and shear stress and free vibration properties. A comparison was made to those from the existing literature. Numerical results show that considering real soil as a continuum space affects the results of the bending and the modal properties significantly.

The simulation and experiment for the fault current limiting characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using the magnetic coupling of series connected two coils were performed. The magnetic fluxes generated from two coils were canceled out during a normal time. However, the resistance generation of high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element after a fault occurrence allows the magnetic fluxes of two coils and contributes to the fault current limiting operation. Through the computer simulation and the current limiting experiment for this SFCL, the operational current and the limiting impedance of the SFCL could be confirmed to be improved by adjusting the inductance ratio of two coils.

We report the performance of a four-element, 11.67 GHz, $high-{T}_c$ superconducting (HTS) microstrip antenna array with corporate feed network. The HTS antenna array used in this work had a circular polarization for direct broadcasting satellite (DBS) system. Our array antennas were designed and built on a 0.5 mm thick MgO substrate. To compare the superconducting antennas with normal conducting counterpart, One antenna pattern was fabricated from gold thin film, and a second pattern was fabricated from ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7-x(YBCO)$ superconducting thin film. To improve the axial ratio of circularly polarized arrays, sequential rotation technique were used. Efficiency, radiation pattern, return loss and bandwidth were measured for both antennas at cryogenic temperature and room temperature. The array produced good circular polarization, and the gain of the array at 77 K, relative to a copper array at room temperature was approximately 1.54 dB. The measured return loss of our HTS antenna array was 35.79 dB at the resonant frequency of 11.67 GHz and The total effective bandwidth was about 3.4 %. The results showed that high-temperature superconductors, when used in microstrip arrays, improved the efficiency of the HTS antenna array for circularly polarization.

The relationship between the powder particle size change and a mechanical property of the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) product was examined in detail. The XRD results indicate that the diffraction peaks of BCC appeared in compacts of powder particle size of 4 to $10{\mu}m$ as well as the bulk SUS630. However, the diffraction peaks from both BCC and FCC were observed in the compact with powder size less than $3{\mu}m$. TEM observation revealed that the powder with those BCC/FCC two phase structure have a finely dispersed $SiO_2$ precipitates. Because the Si is ferrite stabilizing element, decrease of Si composition in the matrix phase by the $SiO_2$ precipitation resulted in formation of the retained austenite. Therefore, controlling the elements such as Si as well as oxygen decrease is very important to obtain a normal microstructure in ultra-fine powder $(<3{\mu}m)$ injection molding.

Using FEM, we analyzed the stress changes on early osteonecrosis of femoral head as the necrotic area increases. A 3D FEM model of proximal femur was made from the CT scam data of fresh frozen adult proximal femur with the material properties from literature. The model consisted of 5994 elements and 5275 nodes. FE analyses were peformed using MSC/NASTRAN. At normal states, stress transmission is mainly along the primary compression trabeculae(PCT). Until 60% involvement of PCT with necrotic lesion, stress transmission is still along the remained PCT. When the PCT involvement is from 60% to 85%, stress transmission is along the PCT and margin of the necrotic lesion. When involvement is more than 85%, stress is mostly transferred to posterior part of femoral head.
This study is to find the distribution of the torso surface potential based on electrical cardiac dipole source. In order to find the torso surface potential, the governing equation was developed based on the Green's second theorem. The boundary element method(BEM) which has a good computing capability in case of homogeneous and isotropic medium was applied to solve the equation. To validate the BEM, we considered a homogeneous sphere model which has an electric dipole source inside. The results showed the good agreement between the analytic solution and the computed solution. In normal heart, the simulated torso surface isopotential maps are good agreement with that obtained from the ventricular excitation. The validity of the simulated results were verified by comparing with other results.

A relief valve is a mechanical element to keep safety by controlling high pressure. Usually, the high pressure is relieved by using the spring force and letting the fluid to flow from another way out of system. When its normal pressure is reached, the relief valve can return to initial state. The relief valve should be designed for smooth operation and should satisfy the structural safety requirement under operating condition. The commercial software ANSYS/WORKBENCH is utilized for flow and structural analysis. Very high pressure may cause structural problem due to severe stress. The study suggests the design satisfying the structural design requirement

This paper describes the design and characteristic analysis of a novel 3-DOF(Degree of Freedom) spherical motor. For multi DOF actuating, several numbers of motors have been used. By the using of normal motors they connected each other in single joint, is necessary to a several type of complex power transmission devices. The 3-DOF spherical motor can drive roll, pitch, and yaw motion in only one unit and it is not necessary to use additional gears and links parts. Therefore the using of 3-DOF spherical motor can eliminate; combined effects of inertia, backlash, non-linear friction, and elastic deformation of gears. In this paper, we propose the novel structured 3-DOF spherical motor and derive its principles of operation. Firstly, we designed concept model of novel structured 3-DOF spherical motor. Next, we derive the control method by calculating the currents. Also, to have intuitive driving control, we express the rotor position in equivalent angle-axis system and determine the exciting period of currents from the calculation result of the currents. To verify the control method, we calculated the currents by the position of rotor. and then we analyzed the characteristics by 3D Finite Element Method when the calculated currents are excited.

Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. This paper is proposed the analysis method of the squirrel-cage induction motor driven by IGBT inverter using finite element method (FEM) and subroutine. The effect of the unbalanced magnetic pull in the inverter-fed induction motor which is in asymmetrical whirling motion is presented. The analysis results of rotor eccentricity could compare with motors which have been made normal air-gap motor and irregular air-gap motor and verify reliability. The simulation and experiment results can be useful for on-line faults detection monitoring system of induction motors.
