Har dmaterials such as cemented carbides with or without coated layer, cermets, ceramics and diamond or c-BN high pressure sintered compact are used for cutting tools, wear -resistant parts, rock drilling bits and/or high pressure vessels. These hardmaterials contain not only hard phase, but also second consituent as the element for forming ductile phase and/or sintering aid, and the mechanical properties of each material depend on (1) the amount of the second constituent as well as (2) the grain size of the hard phase. The hardness of each material mainly depends on these two factors. The fracture strength, however, largely depends on other microstructur a1 factors as well as the above two factors. For all hardmaterials, the fracture strength is consider ably affected by (3) the size of microstructur a1 defect which acts as the fracture source. In cemented carbides, the following factors which are generated mainly due to the addition of the second constituent are also important; (4) the variation of the carbon content in the normal phase region free from V-phase and graphite phase, (5) the precipitation of $Co_3$ during heating at about $800^{\circ}C$,(6) the domain size of binder phase, and (7) the formation of ${\beta}$-free layer or Co-rich layer near the surface of sintered compacts. For cemented carbides coated with thin hard substance, the important factors are as follows; (8) the kind of coated substance, (9) the formation of ${\eta}$-phase layer at the interface between coated layer and substrate, (10) the type of residual stress (tension or compression) in the coated layer which depends on the kind of coating method (CVD or PVD), and (11) the properties of the substrate, and (12) the combination, coherency and periodicity of multi-layers. In the lecture, the details of these factors and their effect on the strength will be explained.

Pseudo static analysis using the Mononobe-Okabe method and numerical analysis considering a small strain nonlinearity from the soil were performed to determine the bearing pressure changes of the inverted T-type retaining wall subjected to earthquake motions. In many cases, an inverted 'T' type retaining wall of more than 10 m shows bearing capacity failure under earthquake conditions, despite showing sufficient bearing capacity during normal conditions. The most important reason for this is the change of the effective base area during an earthquake. In this paper, the change of the effective base area of an inverted 'T' type wall is analyzed by using finite difference element code (FLAC). In addition, the effect of dynamic bearing capacity coefficients (which has been suggested by several researchers but not adopted in current design codes and procedures) was verified.

For reinforced concrete members, bond strength is one of the important factors between the two materials: the concrete and the reinforcing element. The bond strength of Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (AFRP) rebar was tested using the pull-out method. Presented were comparison results of the bond strength between AFRP rebar and deformed steel bars from the test. Embedded lengths and diameters of the rebar were taken into account as parameters. The bond stress-slip responses and failure modes of AFRP rebar were evaluated. It was found that the bond stress-slip responses of AFRP rebar were similar to those of deformed steel bars. As the diameter of rebar increased, the pull-out load increased. In addition, it was shown that the bond strength of an AFRP rebar was approximately 54% compared with that of a deformed steel bar.
Latex modified concrete (LMC) exhibits improved material properties including high tensile strength and durability compared with conventional concrete, and hence LMC has been used as protective layers over the bridge deck slabs to increase their service life with underlying assumption of excellent bond behavior between the LMC overlay and the concrete substrate. In this study, the effect of the primary parameters of the concrete substrate (i.e., shrinkage, stiffness and cracking capacity) as well as the LMC overlay thickness on the probability of cracking of the bridge deck slabs using LMC overlays was investigated by carrying out the finite element analysis that simulated the bond behavior of LMC overlays on normal strength concrete (NSC) and HPC bridge deck slabs. Based on the results of the numerical analysis, it is concluded that the relatively high shrinkage strains and stiffness of HPC slabs can increase its probability of cracking in bridge deck slabs using LMC overlay.

The frequency of lightning is increased due to improbable weather condition and global wanning. This phenomenon increases economical damage as well as human damage. Advanced countries like europe and north america have applied the facility standard of lightning by accumulating a store of quantitative data about lightning research. Lightning facility is composed of the lightning accepting part for induction lightning, ground connected electrode which conducts lightning current. The lightning accepting part is composed of normal rod, horizontal conductor, ESE lightning rod. Moreover, lightning accepting part is taken to use by the method of protection. This paper suggests HEC(Hybrid ESE-Conductor) method which mixes horizontal conductor and ESE lightning rod. This is also discovered by experiment that the starting point of corona discharge current is low, so it is efficient for lightning protection comparing with other methods. Moreover, distribution of electric field is analyzed qualitatively by finite element method. It also results in the relation of the starting point of corona discharge current. Corona discharge current makes minute current about some ${\mu}A$ between the electrodes by the strength of electric field. Also it occurs insulation destruction of gas, and it is developed to the shape of streamer by increase of the strength of electric field. We can find that the initial occurrence of streamer and contact probability of lightning can have advantage after researching the starting point of corona discharge current and discharge current of lightning striking point. This research demonstrates that the suggested HEC method is economically competitive as a lightning protection facility, and it takes a capably perfect role.

Oxygen is an essential element for human beings' physical and mental activities, and in particular, plays an important role in brain functions. The present study attempted to investigate the effects of supply of highly concentrated (30%) oxygen on human ability of visuospatial cognition, compared to air of normal oxygen concentration (21%). This study sampled eight male university students (the average age: 23.5) as subjects. An equipment that supplies 21% and 30% oxygen at a constant rate of 8L/min was developed. Two types of questionnaire containing 20 questions were developed to measure the ability of visuospatial cognition, and accuracy and reaction time were calculated from the result of task performance. The average accuracy was $50.63{\pm}8.63$ [%] and $62.50{\pm}9.64$[%] for 21%and 30% oxygen respectively, and a statistically significant difference was found in the accuracy between the two types of oxygen. The average reaction time was $6.60{\pm}O.77$ [sec] and $7.23{\pm}0.69$ [sec] for 21%and 30% oxygen respectively, and a statistically significant difference was not found in the reaction time. The results showed that there is no difference in the average reaction time but the average accuracy rises with the supply of highly concentrated (30%) oxygen, indicating that the supply of highly concentrated oxygen has a partially positive effect on the ability of visuospatial cognition.
The Canton Tower is a high-rise slender structure with a height of 610 m. A structural health monitoring system has been instrumented on the structure, by which data is continuously monitored. This paper presents an investigation on the identified modal properties of the Canton Tower using ambient vibration data collected during a whole day (24 hours). A recently developed Fast Bayesian FFT method is utilized for operational modal analysis on the basis of the measured acceleration data. The approach views modal identification as an inference problem where probability is used as a measure for the relative plausibility of outcomes given a model of the structure and measured data. Focusing on the first several modes, the modal properties of this supertall slender structure are identified on non-overlapping time windows during the whole day under normal wind speed. With the identified modal parameters and the associated posterior uncertainty, the distribution of the modal parameters in the future is predicted and assessed. By defining the modal root-mean-square value in terms of the power spectral density of modal force identified, the identified natural frequencies and damping ratios versus the vibration amplitude are investigated with the associated posterior uncertainty considered. Meanwhile, the correlations between modal parameters and temperature, modal parameters and wind speed are studied. For comparison purpose, the frequency domain decomposition (FDD) method is also utilized to identify the modal parameters. The identified results obtained by the Bayesian method, the FDD method and a finite element model are compared and discussed.

In a prestressed concrete bridge, the magnitude of the prestress force (PF) decreases with time. This unexpected loss can cause failure of a bridge which makes prestress force identification (PFI) critical to evaluate bridge safety. However, it has been difficult to identify the PF non-destructively. Although some research has shown the feasibility of vibration based methods in PFI, the requirement of having a determinate exciting force in these methods hinders applications onto in-service bridges. Ideally, it will be efficient if the normal traffic could be treated as an excitation, but the load caused by vehicles is difficult to measure. Hence it prompts the need to investigate whether PF and moving load could be identified together. This paper presents a synergic identification method to determine PF and moving load applied on a simply supported prestressed concrete beam via the dynamic responses caused by this unknown moving load. This method consists of three parts: (i) the PF is transformed into an external pseudo-load localized in each beam element via virtual distortion method (VDM); (ii) then these pseudo-loads are identified simultaneously with the moving load via Duhamel Integral; (iii) the time consuming problem during the inversion of Duhamel Integral is overcome by the load-shape function (LSF). The method is examined against different cases of PFs, vehicle speeds and noise levels by means of simulations. Results show that this method attains a good degree of accuracy and efficiency, as well as robustness to noise.
In this paper, the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) (Mindlin) for continuum incorporating surface energy is exploited to study the static behavior of ultra-thin functionally graded (FG) plates. The size-dependent mechanical response is very important while the plate thickness reduces to micro/nano scales. Bulk stresses on the surfaces are required to satisfy the surface balance conditions involving surface stresses. Unlike the classical continuum plate models, the bulk transverse normal stress is preserved here. By incorporating the surface energies into the principle of minimum potential energy, a series of continuum governing differential equations which include intrinsic length scales are derived. The modifications over the classical continuum stiffness are also obtained. To illustrate the application of the theory, simply supported micro/nano scaled rectangular films subjected to a transverse mechanical load are investigated. Numerical examples are presented to present the effects of surface energies on the behavior of functionally graded (FG) film, whose effective elastic moduli of its bulk material are represented by the simple power law. The proposed model is then used for a comparison between the continuum analysis of FG ultra-thin plates with and without incorporating surface effects. Also, the transverse shear strain effect is studied by a comparison between the FG plate behavior based on Kirchhoff and Mindlin assumptions. In our analysis the residual surface tension under unstrained conditions and the surface Lame constants are expected to be the same for the upper and lower surfaces of the FG plate. The proposed model is verified by previous work.
The compressive behavior of special-shaped concrete filled tube (CFT) mega column coupled with multiple cavities is studied by testing six columns subjected to cyclically uniaxial compressive load. The six columns include three pentagonal specimens and three hexagonal specimens. The influence of cavity construction, arrangement of reinforcement, concrete strength on failure feature, bearing capacity, stiffness, and residual deformation is examined. Experimental results show that cavity construction and reinforcements make it possible to form a combined confinement effect to in-filled concrete, and the two groups of special-shaped CFT columns show good elastic-plastic compressive behavior. As there is no axial bearing capacity calculation method currently available in any Code of practice for special-shaped CFT columns, values predicted by normal CFT column formulas in GB50936, CECS254, ACI-318, EC4, AISCI-LRFD, CECS159, and AIJ are compared with tested values. The calculated values are lower than the tested values for most columns, thus the predicted bearing capacity is safe. A reasonable calculation method by dividing concrete into active and inactive confined regions is proposed. And high accuracy shows in estimating special-shaped CFT columns either coupled with multiple cavities or not. In addition, a finite element method (FEM) analysis is conducted and the simulated results match the test well.
