Localized Pleural Mesothelioma Inducing Hypoglycemia - 1 case report - (저혈당증을 동반한 늑막 중피세포종 -1례 보고-)

  • Localized mesothelioma is a primary pleural tumor that induces hypoglycemia rarely. We experienced a case of the localized mesothelioma that induced hypoglycemia. The patient was 70 year-old man who was admitted to Severance Hospital because of general weakness and mental confusion in morning before breakfast. He was found to have low level of fasting blood sugar and C-peptide, but had normal serum insulin level. After excision of the tumor, the patient was free from symptoms of hypoglycemia, and fasting blood sugar level was returned to normal range. The most likely speculation of causing hypoglycemia by the mesothelioma was thought to be that the tumor did not secrete insulin itself but the undetectable insulin-like substance and/or antigluconeogenic substances. During the follow up, 5 months after surgical removal of tumor, the patient was in a good condition without symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Effects of Catalytic Reaction and Natural Convection on the Hot Surface Ignition of Methane-Air Mixtures (메탄-공기 예혼합기의 열면점화에 미치는 촉매반응 및 자연대류의 영향)

  • In this study, the experimental and numerical investigations of the ignition of methane-air mixtures by a electrically heated wire have been carried out. In order to define the initial condition and make the analysis simple, the following control unit was developed; which heats the wire to the setting temperature in a very short time, and maintains the wire temperature constant until ignition. Experiments with the feedback control have been performed using nickel and platinum wires in normal gravity and microgravity. From experimental results, ignition temperatures in normal gravity are higher than those in microgravity, however, the dependences of ignition temperature on equivalence ratio are not affected by natural convection. Numerical calculations, including catalytic reaction for platinum, have been performed to analyze the experimental results in microgravity. Numerical results show that reactants near platinum wire are consumed by catalytic reaction, therefore, the higher temperature is needed to ignite the mixture with platinum wire.

  • Most of the blind are low vision blinds due to injury or disease. As their vision decreases, they are experiencing inconvenience in their normal life and forgetting their memories with their family. The purpose of this study is to use Lithophane printing technology to help their normal life and to remember their family. Also, the manufactured 3D plates are to study the conditions that can be optimal understood through the tactile sense of low vision blind. When the low vision blind person understood the 3D plates, they chose three parameters that affect their tactile sense. And by comparing their tactile sense, the optimal condition results were found. This paper was concluded with (1) the round form that perceived as 3D objects, (2) the thin thickness similar to Braille, and (3) the high resolution that can be expressed in detail.

  • The pulsed laser deposition(PLD) technology was used for the deposition of phosphor substance, Gd$_2$O$_3$on commercial glass. An Nd:YAG laser was employed for the deposition (wavelength 266nm, energy up to 100mJ/pu1se, pulse duration is 5ns and repetition rate 10 Hz). With respect to films grown by conventional PLD, this study exhibited the condition at normal temperature. Experiments were done without any reactive gas at a pressure of 10$^{-5}$ ~10$^{-6}$ Torr using second harmonic(λ=532 nm) and fourth harmonic(λ=266 nm) Nd:YAG laser. Analyses of the deposited material grown are performed by EDX, AFM, SEM, PL meseurements.

  • In this paper, friction and wear behaviors between monocrystalline, defect-free copper and carbon on the atomic scale are investigated by using 2-dimensional molecular dynamics simulation. It is assumed that all interatomic forces are given by Morse potential. The deformation of carbon is assumed to be neglected and vacuum condition is also assumed. Average friction and normal forces for various surface conditions, various scratch speeds and scratch depths are obtained from simulations. Changes of wear behaviors for various scratch speeds and surface conditions are investigated by observing snapshots in scratch process. The effects of surface conditions, scratch speeds, and scratch depths on the friction force, normal force, and friction coefficient are also investigated.

  • A surface-normal input/output volume holographic grating coupler (VHGC) operating at 1550nm wavelength region by using a $10{\mu}m$-thick DuPont photopolymer film is designed and fabricated. The angular and wavelength responses of the input/output VHGC are investigated in order to validate applicability of this device in integrated optics and optical communications. The effect of incident-beam position on the output reflectance to determine optimum condition for input coupling is also presented. The fabricated input/output VHGC exhibited an angular selectivity of ${\sim}0.027^{\circ}$, a wavelength selectivity of ~0.8 nm, and an output peak reflectance of 34.13%.

  • This paper describes a study of transient characteristics in 765kV untransposed transmission lines. As the 765(kV) system can carry bulk power, some severe fault on the system nay cause large system disturbance. The large shunt capacitance and small resistance of 765kv transmission line make various difficulties for its protection. These problems including current difference between sending and receiving terminals on normal power flow, low order harmonic current component in fault current and current transformer saturation due to the long DC time constant of the circuit etc. must be investigated and solved. The analysis of transient characteristics at sending terminal has been carried out for the single phase to ground fault and 3-phase short fault, etc. The load current, charging current in normal condition and line flows, fault current, THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) of harmonics, time constants have been analysed for the 765kV untransposed transmission line systems.

  • As the increasing of capacity and technology of power facilities, rotating machines such as turbine generators and water turbines are getting higher at capacity but smaller in size. Thus the monitoring and diagnosis of generators for fault detection and protection has attracted intensive interest. Most of electrical faults of rotating machines appear in their windings. In case of an after-fault in high capacity rotating machines, the recovering cost is usually very expensive and additional time is necessary for returning in a normal situation. In this paper, the magnetic flux patterns in air-gap of a generator under various fault states as well as a normal state are simulated by a conventional FEM tool. These results are successfully applied to detection and diagnosis of the short-circuit condition in rotor windings of a high capacity generator.

A Study on Shear Capacity of High Strength Lightweight Reinforced Concrete T-Beams (고강도 경량콘크리트를 사용한 철근콘크리트 T 형보의 전단성능)

  • This paper is an experimental study on shear capacity of the high strength lightweight reinforced concrete beams with shear-depth ratio between 1.5 and 2.5. Thirteen T & rectangular beams were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacity. The major variables are shear span-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.0, 2.5), concrete compressive strength(f'c=210, 24., 270㎏/㎠) and tensile steel ratio( =0.6, 1.2%). Based on results obtained from experiment of high strength lightweight reinforced concrete Beam & normal concrete, the following conclusions were drawn. (1) The shear capacity of high-strength lightweight concrete is less 15% than that of normal concrete under same condition. (2) As the results of Comparing this experimental datas with other various formulas. It is regarded that ACI 318-89 shear strength formula related tensile strength is proper to design formula of shear strength of high-strength lightweight reinforced concrete using lightweight concrete.

  • This study is a result of laboratory work about abrasion of artificial lightweight concrete and normal concrete in an equal condition, although the bigger a percentage of W/B is, the more increasing artificial lightweight concrete's persentage of loss, in case of mixing Flyash, artificial lightweight concrete percentage of loss is decreasing and in case of mixing W/B 30% and Flyash 15%, the difference of artificial lightweight concrete and normal concrete's percentage of loss is about 3%, there is little difference.
