  • Uniformity of critical currents of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ step-edge Josephson junctions on SrTiO$_3$(100) substrates have been studied at various step-line angles. 15 identical junctions were made in series on each substrate that has a long straight step-edge line. Step-line angles studied were 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, and 45$^{\circ}$with respect to the crystal major axes of the substrate. Scattering of junction critical currents among the junctions on the same substrate increased with the step-line angle. Current-voltage curves showed standard resistively-shunted-junction (RSJ) characteristics in most of the 0$^{\circ}$junctions. However, the number of junctions showing RSJ behavior decreased with increasing step-line angle. Variations of detailed microstructure of the step-edge among junctions, which are coupled with the d-wave symmetry of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, are believed to be the main cause for the nonuniformity in the critical current.ent.

  • The vibrational behavior of nanoelements is critical in determining how a nanostructure behaves. However, combining vibrational analysis with stability analysis allows for a more comprehensive knowledge of a structure's behavior. As a result, the goal of this research is to characterize the behavior of nonlocal nanocyndrical beams with uniform and nonuniform cross sections. The nonuniformity of the beams is determined by three distinct section functions, namely linear, convex, and exponential functions, with the length and mass of the beams being identical. For completely clamped, fully pinned, and cantilever boundary conditions, Eringen's nonlocal theory is combined with the Timoshenko beam model. The extended differential quadrature technique was used to solve the governing equations in this research. In contrast to the other boundary conditions, the findings of this research reveal that the nonlocal impact has the opposite effect on the frequency of the uniform cantilever nanobeam. Furthermore, since the mass of the materials employed in these nanobeams is designed to remain the same, the findings may be utilized to help improve the frequency and buckling stress of a resonator without requiring additional material, which is a cost-effective benefit.

  • For the resistance spot welds of CR1180 and GA1180 TRIP steels, the weld quality evaluation method using the digitalized X-ray transmission imaging apparatus was investigated in comparison with the crosssectional examination method. In the case of the resistance spot welding of CR1180, three circular regions, such as WZ(white zone), GZ(grey zone) and DZ(dark zone), appeared on X-ray image and they corresponded to the diameters of indentation mark, nugget and corona bond, respectively. The variation of X-ray transmission thickness due to the thickness variation of the weld seemed to be mainly responsible for the formation of those contrasts. The X-ray image contrast formed from the variation of transmission thickness at the outer border line of DZ could also enable the inspections of the notch shape, nonuniformity of the welding pressure and spatter from its sharpness, concentricity and the normal straight line, respectively. The X-ray image of the resistance spot weld of galvannealed GA1180 TRIP steel was very similar to that of CR1180 TRIP steel except the crown shaped outer border line of DZ which was considered to be due to the melting behavior of zinc having the boiling temperature even lower than the melting temperature of steel.

  • The deformation and departure processes of a bubble attached to the wall are studied experimentally and numerically to understand the phenomena of the nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement under DC electric field. An air-bubble is injected in a dielectric liquid with different electric fields generated by changing three types of electrode system (Type 1,2 and 3) in the bubble generator. Experimental variables are the electric field strength and the distance and the shape of the electrodes under DC electric field. From experimental results, it is observed that the bubble under Dc electric field is elongated in the same direction as the electric field and the contact angle increases. For the parallel plate electrode which generates a uniform electric field, bubble departure volume doesn't seem to decrease within our experimental range. However, when a needle is raised a few millimeters from the lower electrode to make a nonuniform electric field around the needle, bubble departure volume decreases continuously with the increase of an applied voltage. The reduction effect of bubble departure volume is the most effective under a strong nonuniform electric field generated with Type 3. As the nonuniformity of the electric field due to the shape of a electrode increases, the terminal velocity and the acceleration of a bubble increase largely. For the comparison with visualization results, the deformation of a bubble attached to the electrode is carried out by a numerical method. Numerical results show good agreement qualitatively with experimental results.

  • Heat exchangers have been used for the automotive, HVAC systems, and other various industrial facilities, so the market is very wide. In general, high-efficiency heat exchangers with louver fins are used in the dust-free environment while heat exchangers with wavy fins are used for dusty environment such as construction site, etc. In this study, numerical analysis has been performed for typical heat exchangers, used as oil coolers or fuel coolers, with dual cell model that can handle different grids for the air-side and oil-side of heat exchangers. First wind tunnel tests were conducted to obtain one-dimensional thermal performance data of heat exchangers. Then, heat release rates with varying air flows were numerically predicted using the three-dimensional dual-cell model. The model can greatly enhance the accuracy of thermal design since it includes the effects of nonuniformity of air flows across heat exchangers.

  • Four kinds of gain and offset correction coefficients that are used to correct the nonuniformity between pixels are discussed. And their correction performance has been compared by performing image correction. using the correction coefficients calculated, on the real image data obtained from a newly fabricated camera electronics system. The performance of the correction coefficients depends in general on the number of the light input levels used to obtain the reference image. The result shows that, as expected obviously, when only two light input levles are used to obtain the reference image, even though its correction coefficients are relatively easily calculated, the correction performance is relatively poor. And with the number of light inputs increased to a value of larger than two, the correction performance is improved. It is noted, however, no Significant performance difference is found between the different correction coefficients employed.

  • In order to increase the thickness uniformity in chemical vapor depositon of silicon carbide, we have carried out CFD studies for a CVD apparatus having a horizontally-rotated 3-stage susceptor. We deposited silicon carbide films of 3C-SiC phase showing quite uniform thickness between stages but not uniform one in the stage. The cause of this nonuniformity is thought to be originated from the high rotational speed. And the uniformity between stages can be further increased with the $120^{\circ}$ split type nozzles from CFD results. Through the formation of silicon carbide film on graphite substrates we can make oxidation-resistant and dust-free graphite components with high hardness for the semiconductor applications.

  • The requirement of planarity, such as with-in-wafer nonuniformity, post thickness range, have become increasingly stringent as critical dimensions of devices are decreased and a better control of a planarity become important. The key factors influencing the planarity capability of the CMP process have been well understood through numerous related experiments. These usually include parameters such as process pressures, relative velocities, slurry temperature, polishing pad materials and polishing head structure. Many study have been done about polishing pad and its groove structure because it's considered as one of the key factors which can decide wafer uniformity directly. But, not many study have been done about polisher head structure, especially about polisher head plate design. The purpose of this paper is to know how the plate structure can affect wafer uniformity and how to deteriorate wafer yield. Furthermore, we studied several new designed plate to improve wafer uniformity and also improve wafer yield.

  • A chemical reactor network (CRN) was developed for a lean premixed gas turbine combustor to predict the emission of pollutants such as NOx and CO. In this study, the predictions of NOx and CO emissions from lean premixed methane-air combustion in the gas turbine were carried out using CHEMKIN and a GRI 3.0 methane-air combustion mechanism, which includes the four NO formation mechanisms for various load conditions. The calculated results were compared with experimental data obtained from a modified test combustor to validate the model. The contributions of the four NO pathways were investigated for various load conditions. The effects of nonuniformity of the mass flux and of the equivalence ratio of the injector on the NOx formation were investigated, and a method of reducing the pollutant formation was suggested for the development of a sub-10 ppm gas turbine combustor.

  • Center of photon mass(CPM), defined as the center of axial photon distribution, is proposed as a unified design parameter, which contains information about both threshold gain and nonuniformity of axial photon distribution in DFB lasers with low and high-reflection facets. The CPM is inversely proportional to threshold gain and is 0.5 when axial photon distribution is the most uniform. Therefore, a general rule of single-frequency leser design is that main mode CPM should be around 0.5 for-uniform axial photon distribution and side mode CPM should be minimized to maximize the threshold gain difference.
