  • Nonstructural elements are installed according to the function of a building, and refer to the elements other than a structural system that resists external loads. Although the nonstructural elements had the largest part of seismic loss of buildings, seismic design of buildings mainly focuses on structural system and the seismic design of nonstructural elements are rarely conducted. In this study, the seismic design provisions of nonstructural elements presented in Uniform Building Code (UBC) and International Building Code (IBC) were investigated in order to analyze the seismic design considerations of nonstructural elements presented in Korean Building Code (KBC). The results showed that the equivalent static load applied to seismic design of nonstructural elements was revised to take into consideration a total of five items such as effective ground acceleration, vertical amplification factor, response amplification factor, response modification factor, importance factor.

  • After the Gyeong-ju 9.12 earthquake, we found the necessity of seismic design of nonstructural element is important to reduce damages in view of properties and economic losses. This study focused on the investigation of damages including both properties and human beings. It was found that most of the damages are leaking of water pipe line, rupture of glasses, spalling of roof finishing, cracks of building, and falling from roof. It was also found that the seismic design force of nonstructural elements is taking account into the natural periods, amplification factors, response modification factors to forsee inelastic behaviors. From this studies, it is recommended that more studies are necessary on the seismic design force of nonstructural element.

  • The P38 promoter of minute virus of mice (MVM) is a very weak promoter which is strongly transactivated by viral nonstructural proteins. To analyze the upstream sequence of the P38 promoter which is responsible for the transactivation by nonstructural proteins in MVM, chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) reporter plasm ids containing a series of 5' deletion and internal deletion mutants of the P38 promoter were constructed. The wild type and mutant CAT constructs of P38 promoter were cotransfected into murine A92L fibroblast cells with a plasmid expressing viral nonstructural proteins by DEAE-dextran method. Each promoter activity was analyzed by CAT assay. As previously reported (Ahn et al., 1992), the proximal DNA cis-elements required for transactivation of the MVM P38 promoter are GC box and TATA box. However, the analysis of 5' deletion mutants showed that H-l tar like sequence (MVM TAR) which is located between -143 and -122 relative to the transcription initiation site is also required for transactivation of the P38 promoter by nonstructural proteins. Interestingly, even if the MVM TAR was removed by internal deletion, the level of the transactivation is still 70% of wild type level of transactivation. We also found that, in addition to the MVM TAR motif, there are two other motifs which are similar to the MVM TAR sequence. When these TAR like motifs were further deleted, the levels of transactivation were decreased further. Taken together, the MVM TAR sequence and TAR like motifs located upstream of P38 promoter are playing an important role for the transactivation of P38 promoter by nonstructural proteins in minute virus of mice.

  • Limiting the displacement of seismic isolators causes a pounding phenomenon under severe earthquakes. Therefore, the ASCE 7-16 has provided minimum criteria for the design of the isolated building. In this research the seismic response of isolated buildings by Triple Friction Pendulum Isolator (TFPI) under the impact, expected, and unexpected mass eccentricity was evaluated. Also, the effect of different design parameters on the seismic behavior of structural and nonstructural elements was found. For this, a special steel moment frame structure with a surrounding moat wall was designed according to the criteria, by considering different response modification coefficients (RI), and 20% mass eccentricity in one direction. Then, different values of these parameters and the damping of the base isolation were evaluated. The results show that the structural elements have acceptable behavior after impact, but the nonstructural components are placed in a moderate damage range after impact and the used improved methods could not ameliorate the level of damage. The reduction in the RI and the enhancement of the isolator's damping are beneficial up to a certain point for improving the seismic response after impact. The moat wall reduces torque and maximum absolute acceleration (MAA) due to unexpected enhancement of mass eccentricity. However, drifts of some stories increase. Also, the difference between the response of story drift by expected and unexpected mass eccentricity is less. This indicates that the minimum requirement displacement according to ASCE 7-16 criteria lead to acceptable results under the unexpected enhancement of mass eccentricity.

  • Non-structural elements, such as equipment, are typically affixed to a building's floor or ceiling and move in tandem with the structure during an earthquake. Seismic forces acting upon non-structural elements traverse the ground and the building's structure. Considering this seismic load transmission mechanism, it becomes imperative to account for the interactions between soil, structure, and equipment, establishing seismic design procedures accordingly. In this study, a Soil-Structure-Equipment Interaction (SSEI) model is developed. Through seismic response analysis using this model, how the presence or absence of SSEI impacts equipment behavior is examined. Neglecting the SSEI aspect when assessing equipment responses results in an overly conservative evaluation of its seismic response. This emphasizes the necessity of proposing an analytical model and design methodology that adequately incorporate the interaction effect. Doing so enables the calculation of rational seismic forces and facilitates the seismic design of non-structural elements.

  • Ambient vibration tests were carried out to evaluate the dynamic properties of an asymmetric steel building with semi-rigid connections. The test case has many non-structural elements, constructed in the city of Tehran (Iran). The tests were conducted to obtain natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratio of the structure and then Fourier transform were used to analyze the velocity records obtained from the tests. The first and second natural periods of the building were obtained as 1.37 s and 1.28 s through the test and damping ratio for the first mode was calculated as 0.047. However, Natural periods obtained from finite element model have higher values from those gained from ambient vibration. Then the model was calibrated by modeling of the in-fill masonry panels at their exact locations and considering the boundary conditions by modeling two blocks near the block No. 3, but the differences were existed. These differences may be due to some hidden stiffness of nonstructural elements in the low range of elastic behavior, showing the structure stiffer than it is in reality.

  • Secure operation of hospitals during and right after earthquake is essential. Past lessons from earthquake damages have shown that most of the injured and the death occurred within 30 minutes after earthquake and the portion of nonstructural damage has become significant. However, hospital buildings in Korea have not prepared fully to address such rising issues. This paper is to study what type of damage patterns are related to hospital buildings and how to develop a preparedness plan to keep hospitals operational at all earthquakes if possible. This paper first reviews on past earthquake damages reported as critical to hospital buildings while classifying them into four groups: (1) structural element; (2) architectural-nostructural element; (3) medical equipments and contents; and (4) utility facility. Upon such classification, some detailed concerns can be specified under each group explicitly. Then a hierarchy for hospital building is also developed for the classified groups, which enables us to identify required things for the enhancement of seismic performance of hospital building that consists of heterogeneous elements. To upgrade the level of seismic performance for existing hospital buildings, the concept of performance-based approach can be adopted to address the heterogeneous problems in a systematic and stepwise manner. Finally a conceptual framework for the seismic risk assessment for hospital building is proposed toward the seismic enhancement of hospital buildings using performance-based approach.

  • Differential shortenings of columns in a highrise building must be considered in the design process to avoid unexpected damages in structural and nonstructural elements. While research activity has been reported in the literature on the development of estimation algorithms or prediction procedures of elastic and inelastic column shortenings, no algorithms or methods for compensation of differential shortenings. In this paper a compensation method for differential column shortenings in a high-rise is formulated as an optimization problem The simulated annealing algorithm is used to find optimal solutions. The performance of the proposed method is presented by using the well known examples developed by PCA.

  • Masonry-infilled walls have been used in reinforced concrete(RC) frame structures as interior and exterior partition walls. Since these walls are considered as nonstructural elements, they were only considered as additional mass. However, infill walls tend to interact with the structure's overall strength, rigidity, and energy dissipation. Infill walls have been analyzed by finite element method or transposed as equivalent strut model. The equivalent strut model is a typical method to evaluate masonry-infilled structure to avoid the burden of complex finite element model. This study compares different strut models to identify their properties and applicability with regard to the characteristics of the structure and various material models.
