Public Marketing of a Nonprofit-Oriented Educational Institution: Inje University's Pioneering Work in the Frontier (비영리교육기관의 공익마케팅: 인제대학교의 프론티어개척)

  • Inje University, a nonprofit-oriented educational institution, was ranked second in the nation and first in all the local universities in the 2001 Comprehensive Evaluation of the Universities in 25 years since it was founded. In order to find out the reason for this high reputation, we had an interview with the chairman and an in-depth interview with other school authorities, interviewed the students and the residents in the community, and collected related data for the second time. We revealed that Inje University had been performing public marketing in the areas of its management philosophy, function, form, and performance. Our interview with the chairman confirmed that Inje University's management philosophy is the frontier spirits that 'contribute to the moor, attracting nobody's attention, in the name of public interest.' It was also revealed that this management philosophy made the function of the university differ from that of the others. Inje University had been focusing on forming a public network for its community, the nation, and the world, not just for its students. Furthermore, we also found out that the university had its unique separate organizations to take care of this business. An excellent on-campus network for the student and the school, a network between off-campus industries, and an international Inje exchange network had been formed. We have concluded that Inje University is a strong nonprofit-oriented hidden champion. The healing art, easily ignored but essential to human beings, and its commitment to education with all its property invested have contributed to Inje University's social status, reputation, and achievements today.

A Study on the Financial Performance for Nonprofit Performing Arts Organizations: Focusing on American Symphony Orchestras (비영리 공연조직의 재정성과에 관한 연구 - 미국오케스트라를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examines financial performance of nonprofit performing arts organizations to provide concrete suggestions and improve their financial performance so that they can build strategies to continue organizational activities. This study investigates empirical data of IRS 990 tax form of top 73 US orchestras and analyzed GLS pannel. Dependent variables are measured as contributions and ticket sales, and independent variables are measured as economic environment, cultural capital, orchestra characters, government grants, and social capital. Based on the finding from the research, determination of contribution outcomes is positively affected by state employment and orchestra's internal characteristics including age, size and conductor's US nationality, government grants, and volunteer. Ticket sales are affected by employment, education level, orchestra's resources, government grants, and volunteer. However, a size of cultural market negatively influences on financial outcomes and cultural capital doesn't influence on results. Interesting finding is a relationship between volunteers and organizations is vital of their fiscal achievement. This is significant in empirical analysis on nonprofit performing arts organizations from an economic view point, and will contribute on organizations to improve their strategic plan to sustain a business.

The Effect of Donations Feedback and Donation Awareness to Donation Continuity Intention (기부금 사용 내역 피드백과 기부인식이 기부지속에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of donation expenditure details and the shift in awareness as a result of disclosure of donation expenditure details in order to promote constant donation by nonprofit organizations in the course of marketing activities. The first experiment was configured through $2{\times}2$ intergroup element design based on 2(feedback on donation expenditure details: available vs. unavailable) ${\times}$ 2(donation awareness: expenditure vs. exchange), and furthermore, MANOVA was performed. The results showed that the satisfaction with donation was higher when the donation expenditure details were disclosed(M=5.125, SD=0.437) and that the relation maintenance intention was higher(p<0.01) when the donation expenditure details were disclosed M=5.328, SD=0.459). In addition, the main effect was validated by using the bootstrapping method. The results of overall model validation showed that satisfaction & trust(=0.843, p<0.01) and satisfaction(=0.267, p<0.01) and trust(=0.691, p<0.01) had a positive(+) relationship. Based on aforesaid results, donors are expected to have greater trust if nonprofit organizations make effort to ensure transparent and detailed disclosure of information on expenditure of donations made by donors. Succeeding studies would need to investigate the effect that might vary depending on the type of feedback methods, etc.

A Study on the Relationship between Marketing Activities and Brand Equity in Nonprofit Organizations : Focused on the Donation Market of Charitable Organizations (비영리조직의 마케팅 활동과 브랜드 자산 간 관계에 관한 연구: 자선모금기관의 기부시장(donation market)을 중심으로)

  • This study explores the relationship between marketing activities and brand equity in nonprofit organizations, specifically investigating the relational linkage between four selected marketing mix elements and brand equity through the mediating role of brand equity dimensions. Employing a structural equation model, the study empirically tests research hypotheses and finds some important implication for brand equity creation strategies for nonprofits. The results show that brand association is the only dimension that is positively related to brand equity, reflecting the current donation market in Korea where nonprofits have such a low presence that donors have little knowledge and chance to identify their brands and to build trust relationships with them. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance and roles of promotion and process marketing efforts, as they are proved to enhance brand association. The study also finds that promotion is positively related to brand awareness and process contributes to perceived quality and brand loyalty. Based on these findings, the study suggest that nonprofits make further efforts on active promotion and process development to create positive, differentiated images and better accessibility, and finally improve their brand equity.

Confidence Indicators and Evaluation Factors of Credibility According to the Types of Online Information (온라인 정보원의 유형별 신뢰지수 및 신뢰성 평가요인)

  • This study tried to develop the confidence indicators and evaluation factors of credibility according to the types of online information by nationwide large scale online survey. The main results are summarized as follows: i) confidence indicators by types of online information: information on news sites(72.553), financial companies(68.894), government sites(67.938), cafe(66.464), portal sites(65.001), collective intelligence sites(63.489), nonprofit organization (63.392), company/corporation sites(59.789), blog(59.066), online community sites(55.609), e-commerce sites(55.118), mini-homepage(50.695). ii) 'Widely known site' or 'famous site' is the most important factor for all types of online information. User opinions like as posting or comment are major factors for sites of cafe, blog, mini-homepage, online community, collective intelligence etc. and 'name recognition' and 'reputation' are main factors for site of financial company, corporation, government, nonprofit organization.

A Study on the Service Support Program for the Work-Family Balance in the Community (일-가정 균형을 위한 지역사회의 지원에 대한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate service support programs for the work-family balance in the community. Service support programs in the community are at beginning stages of development, because it has taken about 10 years to put a self-governing system into practice in Korea. This study concentrates on service support programs developed by various service organizations in the city and does not include any rural districts. First, the developmental process of the work-family balance model and type of the service support program in the community were studied. Next, the situation of care service support was examined based on written articles. Finally, a few suggestions were made f3r work-family balance in the community. The developmental situation of work-flmily balance in Korea is in a stage which is shifting from the company-leading model to a family-company-community model. The most common type of service support program offered in the community until now has been the informal sector through relatives, neighbors or friends. However, service support programs, in the public sector by the government and in the voluntary sector by nonprofit organizations and corporations, has rapidly been growing and the number of services from each sector has also increased. Profit organizations in the private sector, such as medical and care service centers, are also now rapidly increasing. It appears that service support programs contributing to the work-family balance in the community come from a number of sectors, including public, voluntary, private and informal sectors, to suit consumer needs.

A Qualitative Case Study on the Work-Family Reconciliation Experiences of NPO Workers (비영리조직 구성원의 일가족양립 경험에 대한 질적 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of work-family reconciliation of Korean nonprofit organization workers. To achieve this purpose, researchers collected data from in-depth interviews and analysed the data through qualitative case study approach that is useful to reveal the invisible phenomenon. As results, the researchers found several categories that were related to work-family reconciliation and experiences in those categories. Specifically, 'the richer-get-richer' in the category of institution, 'organizational culture is important', 'can use but also not', 'the pure value of work' in the work, 'struggling: acceptance and easing my mind' in the family and finally 'measuring and tightrope' in between the work and family. Penetrating analysis of the nature of these found three themes, 'ultimate choice, nonprofit', 'proper than the best: a tipped scale is also balanced', 'systems are living things: ever-changing'. Based on these findings, researchers suggested several policies and practical alternatives to support work-family reconciliation of NPOs and their workers in Korea.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study building and maintaining consumer trust in mobile contents for tourism and travel in perspective of public sector. Mobile contents services are increasing rapidly. Tourism contents in mobile services are non profit business model in an early and immature stage toward the ubiquitous era. Non-profit organization plays a role as service provider through Internet and wireless telecommunication in an information-intensive and network-oriented environment. This article is proposed nonprofit organizations as tourism contents service provider to identify a conceptual framework that can build continuous trusted mobile contents under ubiquitous environment according to developing and maintaining stage. The results based on the focus group interview methodology highlights a conceptual foundation for service providers in nonprofit domain.
