For efficient spectral utilization of satellite channels, a shared band transmission technique is introduced in this paper. A satellite transmits multiple received signals from a gateway and terminal in the common frequency band by superimposing the signals. To improve the power efficiency as well as the spectral efficiency, a travelling wave tube amplifier in the satellite should operate near the saturation level. This causes a nonlinear distortion of the superimposed transmit signal. Without mitigating this nonlinear effect, the self-interference cannot be properly cancelled and the desired signal cannot be demodulated. Therefore, an adaptive compensation scheme for nonlinearity is herein proposed with the proper operation scenario. It is shown through simulations that the proposed shared band transmission approach with nonlinear compensation and self-interference cancellation can achieve an acceptable system performance in nonlinear satellite channels.

Digital communication channels are imparied by linear effects such as dispersion, ISI(intersymbol Interference), fading phenomenon etc. But, the practical channel equalization system is required to design for compensating the nonlinear distortion caused by harmonic distortion etc. This paper is a study on the performance of nonlinear channel equalization using RBF(Radial Basis Funclion) network, which has the equivalent structure to the optimal Basian filter. Expecially, the variance of RBF network is modifiedby nonlinear polynomial filters to compare the convergence characteristic of nonlinear channel equalization. Experimental results show that the modified RBF network achieves the faster convergence property than conventional RBF network. Moreover, the RBF network ofhigher order variance modified represents the better performance than that of lower order variance in the bandpass channels and second/third order polynomial channels.

In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted 16-channel WDM signal due to chromatic dispersion self phase modulation(SPM) and four-wave mixing(FWM). The bit rate and uniform frequency spacing of WDM channels are assumed to be 40 Gbps and 100 ㎓, respectively. The compensation method used in this approach is mid- span spectral inversion(MSSI), Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator(On) in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. We confirmed that applying MSSI in WDM channels within special input power level compensates overall interferenced channels mainly due to FWM. But for long wavelength WDM channels having lower conjugated light power with respect to signal light power, compensation quality is deteriorated as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher. Consequently, we confirmed that it is effective D apply MSSI with HNL-DSF as a nonlinear medium of OPC to WDM transmission link with relative small dispersion in order to compensate equally spaced WDM channels.

As recording densities increase in digital magnetic recording channels, the performances of digital detection techniques such as PRML and DFE degrade significantly due to nonlinear distortion in recording channels. The primary impediments for hgih-density recording are generally classified as nonlinear transition shift, which can be reduced substantially by the precompensation technique, and partial erasure which usually requires sophisticated nonlinear equalization techniques. In order to acheieve the highest density recording, accurate estimation of the parameters associated with these two noninear distortions is crucial. In this paper, a new estimation technique to distinguish these two different nonlinear effect using a proposed adaptive algorithm in time domain is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive approach to identify uniquely the nonlinear parameter with bias is demonstrated by computer simulation.
Methods to prepare novel second-order nonlinear optical (2O-NLO) materials composed of all-silica zeolite (silicalite-1) and a series of 2O-NLO molecules having high second order hyperpolarizability constants (${\beta}$ values) are reviewed. These methods include the development of novel methods to incorporate a series of hemicyanine (HC) molecules into the channels of silicaite-1 films in uniform orientations. The first method is to incorporate HC molecules tethered with long alkyl chains (octadecyl or longer) into the silicalite-1 channels with the long alkyl chain side first through the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the long alky chains and the silicalite-1 channels. The second method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with a medium length alkyl chain (nonyl) into the silicalite-1 channels with the medium length alkyl chain side first through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the medium length alky chain in the photoexcited state and the silicalite-1 channels. The third method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with propionic acid into the silicalite-1 channels with the propionic acid side last mediated by a tetrabultylammonium cation ion-paired to the propionate unit. A method to prepare a novel third-order nonlinear optical (3O-NLO) material composed of zeolite-Y and PbS or PbSe quantum dots is also reviewed. This Account thus describes a promising new direction to which the search for highly sensitive 2O-NLO and 3O-NLO materials has to be conducted and a new direction to which zeolite research and applications have to be expanded.

In this paper, a modified version of PRML is discussed to reduce nonlinearity in digital high-density storage devices. We propose a PRML with a nonlinear compensator which can reduce nonlinear interaction between the stored flux regions on the storage channel, and apply it to recording channels with three different densities. By comparing its performance with the existing PRML through computer simulation, we confirm that the nonlinear intersymbol interference increasing with high-density recording channels can be reduced effectively by the PRML with a nonlinear compensator.

In this paper, blind equalization using a modified Fuzzy C-Means algorithm with Gaussian Weights (MFCM_GW) is attempted to the heavy noise-corrupted channels. The proposed algorithm can deal with both of linear and nonlinear channels, because it searches for the optimal channel output states of a channel instead of estimating the channel parameters in a direct manner. In contrast to the common Euclidean distance in Fuzzy C-Means (FCM), the use of the Bayesian likelihood fitness function and the Gaussian weighted partition matrix is exploited in its search procedure. The selected channel states by MFCM_GW are always close to the optimal set of a channel even the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is heavily corrupted in it. Simulation studies demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is relatively superior to existing genetic algorithm (GA) and conventional FCM based methods in terms of accuracy and speed.

The neural convolutional decoder(NCD) was proposed as a method of decoding convolutional codes. In this paper, simulation results are presented for coherent BPSK in memoryless AWGN channels and coherent QPSK in the satellite channels. The NCD can learn the nonlinear distortion caused by the charactersitics of the satellite channel including the filtering effects and the nonlinear effects of the travling wave tube amplifier(TWTA). Thus, as compared with the AWGN channel, the performance difference in the satellite channel between the NCD for the systematic code and the Viterbi decoder for the nonsystematic code is reduced.

The major reason that reduces the performance of satellite communication channels is known as the nonlinearities of high power amplifiers(HPA's) which are usually modeled by memoryless nonlinear systems, in the channels. This paper proposes a nonlinear adaptive predistorter, which predistorts the input symbols such that the symbol passing through the nonlinear HPA preserves the desired constellation, and derives the region of convergence for the predistorter. The predistorter has capability of coping adaptively with any time-varying environment such as changes of operating points if HPA since the coefficients of the predistorter which has a form of truncated Tayler series are obtained by recursive optimization procedure utilizing QAM data sequence directely. Simulation results show that the proposed one with 16 QAM input has better performance than the conventional fixed predistorter with the same input.

In this paper, a structure for a nonlinear adaptive equalizer is discussed to reduce nonlinearity in digital high-density recording systems. We propose a nonlinear adaptive decision feedback equalizer which can reduce the nonlinear intersymbol interference increasing with high-density recording systems, and compare its performance with the RAM-DFE which is designed to remove nonlinear intersymbol interference existing in postcursor part. By observing the output SNR of each equalizer applied to recording channels with three different densities. we confirm that the nonlinear adaptive decision feedback equalizer performs the best in the general case where nonlinear intersymbol interference exists in both precursor and postcursor parts.
