In this paper, an adaptive fuzzy neural control of unknown nonlinear systems based on the rapid learning algorithm is proposed for optimal parameterization. We combine the advantages of fuzzy control and neural network techniques to develop an adaptive fuzzy control system for updating nonlinear parameters of controller. The Fuzzy Neural Network(FNN), which is constructed by an equivalent four-layer connectionist network, is able to learn to control a process by updating the membership functions. The free parameters of the AFN controller are adjusted on-line according to the control law and adaptive law for the purpose of controlling the plant track a given trajectory and it's initial values are off-line preprocessing, In order to improve the convergence of the learning process, we propose a rapid learning algorithm which combines the error back-propagation algorithm with Aitken's $\delta$$\^$2/ algorithm. The heart of this approach ls to reduce the computational burden during the FNN learning process and to improve convergence speed. The simulation results for nonlinear plant demonstrate the control effectiveness of the proposed system for optimal parameterization.

In this paper, a finite impulse response(FIR) fixed-lag smoother is proposed for discrete-time nonlinear systems. If the actual state trajectory is sufficiently close to the nominal state trajectory, the nonlinear system model can be divided into two parts: The error-state model and the nominal model. The error state can be estimated by adapting the optimal time-varying FIR smoother to the error-state model, and the nominal state can be obtained directly from the nominal trajectory model. Moreover, in order to obtain more robust estimates, the linearization errors are considered as a linear function of the estimation errors. Since the proposed estimator has an FIR structure, the proposed smoother can be expected to have better estimation performance than the IIR-structured estimators in terms of robustness and fast convergence. Additionally the proposed method can give a more general solution than the optimal FIR filtering approach, since the optimal FIR smoother is reduced to the optimal FIR filter by setting the fixed-lag size as zero. To illustrate the performance of the proposed method, simulation results are presented by comparing the method with an optimal FIR filtering approach and linearized Kalman filter.
According to the controllability of pulse times and the amount of jumps in the states at these times in the process of fed-batch culture producing 1,3-propanediol, this paper proposes a terminal optimal control model, whose constraint condition is the nonlinear impulsive delay system. The existence of optimal control is discussed and an optimization algorithm which is applied to each subinternal over one cycle for this optimal control problem is constructed. Finally, the numerical simulations show that the terminal intensity of producing 1,3-propanediol has been increased obviously.
One of the most effective countermeasures for mitigating cable vibration is to install mechanical dampers near the anchorage of the cable. Most of the dampers used in the field are so-called passive dampers where their parameters cannot be changed once designed. The parameters of passive dampers are usually determined based on the optimal damper force obtained from the universal design curve for linear dampers, which will provide a maximum additional damping for the cable. As the optimal damper force is chosen based on a predetermined principal vibration mode, passive dampers will be most effective if cable undergoes single-mode vibration where the vibration mode is the same as the principal mode used in the design. However, in the actual engineering practice, multi-mode vibrations are often observed for cables. Therefore, it is desirable to have dampers that can suppress different modes of cable vibrations simultaneously. In this paper, MR dampers are proposed for controlling multi-mode cable vibrations, because of its ability to change parameters and its adaptability of active control without inquiring large power resources. Although the highly nonlinear feature of the MR material leads to a relatively complex representation of its mathematical model, effective control strategies can still be derived for suppressing multi-mode cable vibrations based on nonlinear modelling, as proposed in this paper. Firstly, the nonlinear Bouc-wen model is employed to accurately portray the salient characteristics of the MR damper. Then, the desired optimal damper force is determined from the universal design curve of friction dampers. Finally, the input voltage (current) of MR damper corresponding to the desired optimal damper force is calculated from the nonlinear Bouc-wen model of the damper using a piecewise linear interpolation scheme. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm for mitigating multi-mode cable vibrations induced by different external excitations.

This article investigates various transcription techniques for the Legendre pseudospectral (PS) method to compare the pros and cons of each approach. Eight combinations from four different types of collocation points and two discretization methods for dynamic constraints, which differentiate Legendre PS transcription techniques, are implemented to solve a carefully selected test set of nonlinear optimal control problems (NOCPs). The convergence property and prediction accuracy are compared to provide a useful guideline for selecting the best combination. The tested NOCPs consist of the minimum time, minimum energy, and problems with state and control constraints. Therefore, the results drawn from this comparative study apply to the solution of similar types of NOCPs and can mitigate much debate about the best combinations. Additionally, important findings from this study can be used to improve the numerical efficiency of the Legendre PS methods. Three PS applications to the aerospace engineering problems are demonstrated to prove this point.

To achieve fast loading and unloading of containers from a container ship, quick suppression of the remaining sway motion of the container at the end of each trolley stroke is crucial. Due to the pendulum motion of the container and disturbances like sind, residual sway always exists at the end of trolley movement. In this paper, the sway-control problem of a container crane is investigated. A two-stage control is proposed. The first stage is a time optimal controlfor the purpose of fast trolley traveling. The second stage is a nonlinear control for the quick suppression of residual sway, which starts right after the first stage while lowering the container. The nonlinear control is investigated in the perspective of controlling an underatuated mechanical system, which combines partial feedback linearization to account for the known nonlinearities as much as possible, and variable structure control to account for the unmodeled dynamics and disturbances. Simulation and experimental results are provided.
The pH neutralization process has long been taken as a representative benchmark problem of nonlinear chemical process control due to its nonlinearity and time-varying nature. For general nonlinear processes, it is difficult to control with a linear model-based control method so nonlinear controls must be considered. Among the numerous approaches suggested, the most rigorous approach is the dynamic optimization. However, as the size of the problem grows, the dynamic programming approach is suffered from the curse of dimensionality. In order to avoid this problem, the Neuro-Dynamic Programming (NDP) approach was proposed by Bertsekas and Tsitsiklis (1996). The NDP approach is to utilize all the data collected to generate an approximation of optimal cost-to-go function which was used to find the optimal input movement in real time control. The approximation could be any type of function such as polynomials, neural networks and etc. In this study, an algorithm using NDP approach was applied to a pH neutralization process to investigate the feasibility of the NDP algorithm and to deepen the understanding of the basic characteristics of this algorithm. As the global approximator, the neural network which requires training and k-nearest neighbor method which requires querying instead of training are investigated. The global approximator requires optimal control strategy. If the optimal control strategy is not available, suboptimal control strategy can be used even though the laborious Bellman iterations are necessary. For pH neutralization process it is rather easy to devise an optimal control strategy. Thus, we used an optimal control strategy and did not perform the Bellman iteration. Also, the effects of constraints on control moves are studied. From the simulations, the NDP method outperforms the conventional PID control.

In this paper we suggest a general purpose RNN training algorithm which is derived on the optimal control concepts and variational methods. First, learning is regared as an optimal control problem, then using the variational methods we obtain optimal weights which are given by a two-point boundary-value problem. Finally, the modified gradient descent algorithm is applied to RNN for on-line training. This algorithm is intended to be used on learning complex dynamic mappings between time varing I/O data. It is useful for nonlinear control, identification, and signal processing application of RNN because its storage requirement is not high and on-line learning is possible. Simulation results for a nonlinear plant identification are illustrated.
Nonlinear PID controllers have increasingly used in current industrial practice because it is robust and is easy to operate. Little guideline and tuning method, however, has been recommended for the nonlinear PID controllers while a lot of result is available for the linear PID controllers. Application guideline and tuning formulae are presented for error square type nonlinear controllers, which are most popular currently, are presented.
This paper studies on the feedback linearization of the looper system for hot strip mills, where the looper system plays an important role in regulating the strip tension. Firstly, nonlinear dynamic equations of the looper system are simply introduced. Secondly, using the static feedback linearization algorithm, a linear model of the looper system is obtained, of which usefulness is validated from comparison between the linear model and the nonlinear model, and design of LQI(Linear Ouadratic Integral optimal control) and ILQ (Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control systems. In result, it is shown that the linear looper model by the feedback linearization well describes nonlin...
