  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.

  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a MS (multiple scales) procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. The proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated with the nonlinear rotating machine system as an example of large mechanical structure systems. In addition, its efficiency for nonlinear response prediction will be shown by comparison of other conventional methods.

  • This paper discusses a design of a nonlinear control for a class of single-input double-output nonlinear mechanical systems. When conventional linearization methods are applied to the mechanical systems, some problems of oscillation and unstable phenomena arise. The proposed nonlinear control system resolves these problems. In this design the eigenvalues of the closed-loop nonlinear system are assigned to desired locations and local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. is guaranteed. The design method is applied to an inverted pendulum system with a moving weight mechanism. Experimental results show that the proposed nonlinear controller is more effective for stability than the usual linear controller.

  • In this study, we developed an automatic veneer sorting system controlled by nonlinear friction and nonlinear stiffness. With these nonlinear characteristics, it was difficult to analysis and to control the system in the fast. However it is necessary to consider nonlinear characteristics to satisfy accurate and rapid control demand in these days. We used not only nonlinear friction but also nonlinear stiffness and combined both to control the system. An experimental device was designed with 4 AC servo-motors and 2 Sensors. Through a series of experiment, we found nonlinear friction characteristics among roller versus veneer and veneer versus veneer and nonlinear stiffness characteristics with stacked veneers. Finally, we showed that the proposed control algorithm was very effective for veneer sorting system with nonlinear friction and stiffness.

  • Mathematical models of industrial robots or manipulators are highly nonlinear equations with nonlinear coupling between the variables of motion. As the working speed has been fast, the effects of nonlinear terms have become serious. So the control algorithm based on approximately linearized equation looses the efficiency. In order to design the control law for the nonlinear models, Hunt-Su's nonlinear transformation method and Marino's feedback equivalence condition are used with linear quadratic regulator(LQR) theory in this study. Nonlinear terms of the system are eliminated and coupled terms are decoupled by this feedback law. This method is applied to a 3-D.O.F. vertical articulated manipulator by both experiments and simulations and compared with PID control which is widely used in the industry.

  • Although it is well known that fuzzy learning controller is powerful for nonlinear systems, it is very difficult to apply a learning method if they are unstable. An unstable system diverges for impulse input. This divergence makes it difficult to learn the rules unless we can find the initial rules to make the system table prior to learning. Therefore, we introduced LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) technique to stabilize the system. It is a state feedback control to move unstable poles of a linear system to stable ones. But, if the system is nonlinear or complicated to get a liner model, we cannot expect good results with only LQR. In this paper, we propose that the LQR law is derived from a roughly approximated linear model, and next the fuzzy controller is tuned by the adaptive on-line learning with the real nonlinear plant. This hybrid controller of LQR and fuzzy learning was superior to the LQR of a linearized model in unstable nonlinear systems.

  • In this paper, we describe the nonlinear character for a friction control. The nonlinear character of friction control is inherent in mechanical system, which has gained more and more interest. The modeling and compensation of nonlinear friction are difficult tasks for precise motion control. This paper is performance evaluation of nonlinearities and mechanical compliance exists together with friction control system.

  • With the increasing application of explosive composite structure in many engineering fields, its interface bonding state detection is more and more significant to avoid catastrophic accidents. However, this task still faces challenges due to the complexity of the bonding interface. In this paper, the concept of nonlinear output frequency response functions (NOFRFs) is introduced to detect the bonding state of explosive composite structure. The NOFRFs can describe the nonlinear characteristics of nonlinear vibrating system. Because of the presence of the bonding interface, explosive composite structure itself is a nonlinear system; when bonding interface of the structure is damaged, its dynamic characteristics show enhanced nonlinear characteristic. Therefore, the NOFRFs-based detection index is proposed as indicator to detect the bonding state of explosive composite pipes. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the detection approach.

  • This paper presents hybrid control of an active suspension system with a full-car model by using H$\sub$$\infty$/ and nonlinear adaptive control methods. The full-car model has seven degrees of freedom including heaving, pitching and rolling motions. In the active suspension system, the controller shows good performance: small gains from the road disturbances to the heaving, pitching and rolling accelerations of the car body. Also the controlled system must be robust to system parameter variations. As the control method, H$\sub$$\infty$/ controller is designed so as to guarantee the robustness of a closed-loop system in the presence of uncertainties and disturbances. The system parameter variations are taken into account by multiplicative uncertainty model and the system robustness is guaranteed by small gain theorem. The active system with H$\sub$$\infty$/ controller can reduce the accelerations of the car body in the heaving, pitching and rolling directions. The nonlinearity of a hydraulic actuator is handled by nonlinear adaptive control based on the back-stepping method. The effectiveness of the controllers is verified through simulation results in both frequency and time domains.

  • An analysis is presented for the response of a beam constrained by a nonlinear spring to a harmonic excitation. The system is governed by a linear partial differential equation with a nonlinear boundary condition. The method of multiple scales is used to reduce the nonlinear boundary value problem to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations of the amplitudes and phases. The case of the third-order subharmonic resonance is considered in this study. The autonomous system is used to determine the steady-state responses and their stability.
