  • This paper presents a hybrid recognition method, which is based on the nonlinear histogram equalization and the multidimensional intensity variation of an images. The nonlinear histogram equalization based on a adaptively modified function is applied to improve the quality by adjusting the brightness of the image. The multidimensional intensity variation by considering the a extent of 4-step changes in brightness between the adjacent pixels is also applied to reflect accurately the attributes of image. The statistical correlation that is measured by the normalized cross-correlation(NCC) coefficient, is applied to comprehensively measure the similarity between the images. The NCC is considered by the intensity variation of each 2-direction(x-axis and y-axis) image. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 50-face images of 40*40 pixels. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances to the method without performing the histogram equalization, or the linear histogram equalization, respectively.

  • True color images display colors similar to natural colors. This has the advantage that it is possible to monitor rapidly the complex earth atmosphere phenomenon and the change of the surface type. Currently, various organizations are producing true color images. In Korea, it is necessary to produce true color images by replacing generations with next generation weather satellites. Therefore, in this study, visual enhancement for true color image production was performed using Top of Atmosphere (TOA) data of Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) sensor mounted on Himawari-8 satellite. In order to improve the visualization, we performed two methods of Nonlinear enhancement and Histogram equalization. As a result, Histogram equalization showed a strong bluish image in the region over $70^{\circ}$ Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) compared to the Nonlinear enhancement and nonlinear enhancement technique showed a reddish vegetation area.

  • This paper presents a hybrid method for improving the recognition performance, which is based on the nonlinear histogram equalization, features extraction, and statistical correlation of images. The nonlinear histogram equalization based on a logistic function is applied to adaptively improve the quality by adjusting the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. The statistical correlation that is measured by the normalized cross-correlation(NCC) coefficient, is applied to rapidly and accurately express the similarity between the images. The local features based on independent component analysis(ICA) that is used to calculate the NCC, is also applied to statistically measure the correct similarity in each images. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 30-face images of 40*50 pixels. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances to the method without performing the preprocessing, or the methods of conventional and adaptively modified histogram equalization, respectively.

  • This paper presents a histogram equalization based on the logistic function for enhancing the quality of images. The histogram equalization is a simple and effective spatial processing method that it enhances the quality by adjusting the brightness of image. The logistic function that is a nonlinear transformation function is applied to adaptively enhance the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. We propose a flexible and asymmetrical logistic function by only using the intensity level with maximum frequency and the maximum intensity level in an histogram, and the total number of pixels. The proposed function excludes both the computation load of an exponential function and the heuristic setting of an optimal parameter values in the traditional logistic function. The proposed method has been applied for equalizing many images with a different resolution and histogram distribution. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the superior enhancement performances and the faster equalizing speed compared with the traditional histogram equalization and the adaptively modified histogram equalization, respectively. And the proposed histogram equalization can be used in various multimedia systems in real-time.

  • This paper presents a quality enhancement of images by using a histogram equalization based on the symmetric logistic function. The histogram equalization is a simple and effective spatial processing method that it enhances the quality by adjusting the brightness of image. The logistic function that is a sigmoidal nonlinear transformation function, is applied to non-linearly enhance the brightness of the image according to its intensity level frequency. We propose a flexible and symmetrical logistic function by only using the intensity with maximum frequency in an histogram and the total number of pixels. The proposed function decreases the computation load of an exponential function in the traditional logistic function. The proposed method has been applied for equalizing 5 images with a different resolution and histogram distribution. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the superior enhancement performances compared with the source images and the traditional global histogram equalization, respectively.

  • Histogram equalization generally has the disadvantage that if the distribution of the gray level of an image is concentrated in one place, then the range of the gray level in the output image is excessively expanded, which then produces a visually unnatural result. However, a gamma transformation can reduce such unnatural appearances since it operates under a nonlinear regime. Therefore, this paper proposes a new histogram equalization method that can improve image quality by using a gamma transformation. The proposed method 1) derives the proper form of the gamma transformation by using the average brightness of the input image, 2) linearly combines the earlier gamma transformation with a CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function) for the image in order to obtain a new CDF, and 3) to finally perform histogram equalization by using the new CDF. The experimental results show that relative to existing methods, the proposed method provides good performance in terms of quantitative measures, such as entropy, UIQ, SSIM, etc., and it also naturally enhances the image quality in visual perspective as well.

  • By using an adaptive threshold and weight based on the wavelet transform and Haar transform, a novel image enhancement algorithm is proposed. First, a medical image was decomposed with wavelet transform and all high-frequency sub-images were decomposed with Haar transform. Secondly, noise in the frequency domain was reduced by the proposed soft-threshold method. Thirdly, high-frequency coefficients were enhanced by the proposed weight values in different sub-images. Then, the enhanced image was obtained through the inverse Haar transform and wavelet transform. But the pixel range of the enhanced image is narrower than a normal image. Lastly, the image's histogram was stretched by nonlinear histogram equalization. Experiments showed that the proposed method can be not only enhance an image's details but can also preserve its edge features effectively.

  • Recently, several nonlinear shape normalization methods have been proposed in order to compensate for the shape distortions in handwritten characters. In this paper, we review these nonlinear shape normalization methods from the two points of view : feature projection and feature density equalization. The former makes feature projection histogram by projecting a certain feature at each point of input image into horizontal-or vertical-axis and the latter equalizes the feature densities of input image by re-sampling the feature projection histogram. A systematic comparison of these methods has been made based on the following criteria: recognition rate, processing speed, computational complexity and measure of variation. Then, we present the result of quantitative evaluation of each method based on these criteria for a large variety of handwritten Hangul syllables.

  • Sound based machine fault diagnosis is the process consisting of detecting automatically the damages that affect the machines by analyzing the sounds they produce during their operating time. The collected sounds being inevitably corrupted by random disturbance, the most important part of the diagnosis consists of discovering the hidden elements inside the data that can reveal the faulty patterns. This paper presents a novel feature extraction methodology that combines various digital signal processing and pattern recognition methods for the analysis of the sounds produced by the drills. Using the Fourier analysis, the magnitude spectrum of the sounds are extracted, converted into two-dimensional vectors and uniformly normalized in such a way that they can be represented as 8-bit grayscale images. Histogram equalization is then performed over the obtained images in order to adjust their very poor contrast. The obtained contrast enhanced images will be used as the features of our diagnosis system. Finally, principal component analysis is performed over the image features for reducing their dimensions and a nonlinear classifier is adopted to produce the final response. Unlike the conventional features, the results demonstrate that the proposed feature extraction method manages to capture the hidden health patterns of the sound.
