System identification of soil behavior from vertical seismic arrays

  • A down hole vertical seismic array is a sequence of instruments installed at various depths in the earth to record the ground motion at multiple points during an earthquake. Numerous studies demonstrate the unique utility of vertical seismic arrays for studying in situ site response and soil behavior. Examples are given of analyses made at two sites to show the value of data from vertical seismic arrays. The sites examined are the Lotung, Taiwan SMART1 array and a new site installed at Jingliao, Taiwan. Details of the installation of the Jingliao array are given. ARX models are theoretically the correct process models for vertical wave propagation in the layered earth, and are used to linearly map deeper sensor input signals to shallower sensor output signals. An example of Event 16 at the Lotung array is given. This same data, when examined in detail with a Bayesian inference model, can also be explained by nonlinear filters yielding commonly accepted soil degradation curves. Results from applying an ARMAX model to data from the Jingliao vertical seismic array are presented. Estimates of inter-transducer soil increment resonant frequency, shear modulus, and damping ratio are presented. The shear modulus varied from 50 to 150 MPa, and damping ratio between 8% and 15%. A new hardware monitoring system - TerraScope - is an affordable 4-D down-hole seismic monitoring system based on independent, microprocessor-controlled sensor Pods. The Pods are nominally 50 mm in diameter, and about 120 mm long. An internal 16-bit micro-controller oversees all aspects of instrumentation, eight programmable gain amplifiers, and local signal storage.

An Adaptive Complementary Sliding-mode Control Strategy of Single-phase Voltage Source Inverters

  • In order to achieve the high quality output voltage of single-phase voltage source inverters, in this paper an Adaptive Complementary Sliding Mode Control (ACSMC) is proposed. Firstly, the dynamics model of the single-phase inverter with lumped uncertainty including parameter variations and external disturbances is derived. Then, the conventional Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Complementary Sliding Mode Control (CSMC) are introduced separately. However, when system parameters vary or external disturbance occurs, the controlling performance such as tracking error, response speed et al. always could not satisfy the requirements based on the SMC and CSMC methods. Consequently, an ACSMC is developed. The ACSMC is composed of a CSMC term, a compensating control term and a filter parameters estimator. The compensating control term is applied to compensate for the system uncertainties, the filter parameters estimator is used for on-line LC parameter estimation by the proposed adaptive law. The adaptive law is derived using the Lyapunov theorem to guarantee the closed-loop stability. In order to decrease the control system cost, an inductor current estimator is developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is validated through Matlab/Simulink and experiments on a prototype single-phase inverter test bed with a TMS320LF28335 DSP. The simulation and experimental results show that compared to the conventional SMC and CSMC, the proposed ACSMC control strategy achieves more excellent performance such as fast transient response, small steady-state error, and low total harmonic distortion no matter under load step change, nonlinear load with inductor parameter variation or external disturbance.

  • The robot control with safety consideration is required since robots and human work together in the same space more frequently in these days. For safety, robots must have compliance to human force and robust tracking performance with high impednace for the nonhuman disturbances. The novel idea is proposed to achieve the compliance and high impedance with one controller structure. For the compliance, the ISMC(Integral Sliding Mode Control) and HDOB(Human Disturbance Observer) The human force is identified by using the human band pass filter and its output is sent to the sliding surface. The sliding mode dynamic is affected by human disturbance and the compliance for human is achieved. The disturbances besides human frequencies are decoupled by the ISMC and the robust tracking is achieved. The additional LDOB(Low Frequency Disturbance Observer) decreases the maxim nonlinear gain and leads low chattering. The introduction of human disturbance into the sliding mode dynamic is the main novel idea of this paper.

  • To reduce the effects of the uncertainties due to the modeling error and aerodynamic coefficients, a nonlinear adaptive control system based on neural networks is proposed . Neural networks parameters are adjusted by using an adaptive law. The sliding mode control scheme is used to compensate for the effect of the approximation error of neural networks. Control parameters and neural networks structures are optimized to obtain better performance by using the genetic algorithm. By introducing the concept of multi-groups of populations, the genetic algorithm is modified so that individuals and groups can be simultaneously evolved . To verify the performance of the pro posed algorithm, the optimized neural networks control system is applied to an aircraft longitudinal dynamics.

  • In this paper, magneto-rheological(MR) damper is studied for vibration control of large infra structures under earthquake. Generally, active control devices need a large control force and a high power supply system to reduce the vibration effectively. Large and miss tuned control force may induce the dangerous situation such that the generated large control force acts to amplify the structural vibration. Recently, to overcome the weaknesses of the active control, the semi-active control method is suggested by many researchers. Semi-active control uses the passive control device of which the characteristics can be modified. Control force of the semi-active device is not generated from the actuator with power supply. It is generated as a dynamic reaction force of the device same as in the passive control case, so the control system is inherently stable and robust. Unlike the case of passive control, control force of semi-active control is adjusted depending on the measured response of the structure, so the vibration can be reduced more effectively against various unknown environmental loads. Magneto-rheological(MR) damper is one of the semi-active devices. Dynamic characteristics of the MR material can be changed by applying the magnetic fields. So the control of MR damper needs only small power. Response time of MR to the input voltage is very short, so the high performance control is possible. MR damper has a high force capacity so it is adequate to the vibration control of large infra structure. Because MR damper has a nonlinear property, normal control method used in active control may not be effective. Clipped optimal control, modified bang-bang control etc. have been suggested to MR damper by many researchers. In this study, sliding mode fuzzy control(SMFC) is applied to MR damper. Genetic algorithm is used for the controller tuning. To verify the applicability of MR damper and suggested algorithm, numerical simulation on the aseismic control is carried out. Simulation model is three-story building structure, which was used in the paper of Dyke, et al. The control performance is compared with clipped optimal control. The present results indicate that the SMFC algorithm can reduce the earthquake-induced vibration very effectively.

An Enhanced Instantaneous Circulating Current Control for Reactive Power and Harmonic Load Sharing in Islanded Microgrids

  • To address the inaccurate load demand sharing problems among parallel inverter-interfaced voltage-controlled distributed generation (DG) units in islanded microgrids (MGs) with different DG power ratings and mismatched feeder impedances, an enhanced voltage control scheme based on the active compensation of circulating voltage drops is proposed in this paper. Using the proposed strategy, reactive power and harmonic currents are shared accurately and proportionally without knowledge of the feeder impedances. Since the proposed local controller consists of two well-separated fundamental and harmonic voltage control branches, the reactive power and harmonic currents can be independently shared without having a remarkable effect on the amplitude or quality of the DGs voltage, even if nonlinear (harmonic) loads are directly connected at the output terminals of the units. In addition, accurate load sharing can also be attained when the plug-and-play performance of DGs and various loading conditions are applied to MGs. The effects of communication failures and latency on the performance of the proposed strategy are also explored. The design process of the proposed control system is presented in detail and comprehensive simulation studies on a three-phase MG are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • Albatross uses dynamic soaring technique to obtain energy from horizontal winds and fly long distances without flapping. These dynamic soaring technique can be applied to manned/unmanned aircraft to reduce the components required for the aircraft and achieve light weight and small volume to effectively perform a given task. In this paper, to simulate the dynamic soaring technique of Albatross, we defined the optimization problem and set each boundary condition to derive the optimal flight trajectory and carry out simulations to follow it. In particular, to model dynamic soaring simulations more closely with reality, we proposed a horizontal wind model that changes every moment. This identifies and analyzes the effect of the time-variable horizontal wind model on the dynamic soaring mission of unmanned aircraft.

  • In general, the stability and response characteristics of the system can be improved by changing the pole position because a nonlinear system can be linearized by the product of a 1st and 2nd order system. Therefore, a controller that moves the pole can be designed in various ways. Among the other methods, LQ control ensures the stability of the system. On the other hand, it is difficult to specify the location of the pole arbitrarily because the desired response characteristic is obtained by selecting the weighting matrix by trial and error. This paper evaluated a method of selecting a weighting matrix of LQ control that moves multiple double poles with Jordan blocks to real poles. The relational equation between the double poles and weighting matrices were derived from the characteristic equation of the Hamiltonian system with a diagonal control weighting matrix and a state weighting matrix represented by two variables (ρd, ϕd). The Moving-Range was obtained under the condition that the state-weighting matrix becomes a positive semi-definite matrix. This paper proposes a method of selecting poles in this range and calculating the weighting matrices by the relational equation. Numerical examples are presented to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • In conventional method, flight model is discribed to differential equation by linealization of nonlinear object motion equation. As state equation from differential equation of moving object, the controller is designed by transfer functions of each module under discrimination of stability criteria. But this conventional method is designed under limitation of nonlinearity from object's shape and speed. In other word, The greater part of guidance/navigation system was satisfied with the result of good performance for normal figure of flight object, not sudden changed flight condition, not high speed. But it is not able to give full play to its ability on flight object which has abnormal figure, sudden changeable motion, high speed. Therefore, in this paper was presented performance analysis of load control model for navigation/guidance system on flying object being uncertainty, non-linear like abnormal figure, sudden changeable motion, high speed and is presented method of trajectory control(controllability) ahead of controllability and stability to achieve flight mission. In other word, this paper shows the first step of Min-design method and flight control model.

  • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70$\pm$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32$\pm$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The purpose of this study is to identify major geometrical differences between Korean femurs 3nd others that we believe belong to Caucasians so that we would be able to get insights into the femoral component design that fits Asians including Koreans. We utilized computerized tomography (CT) images of femurs extracted from cadavers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh IIci computer.The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal flare index are greater by the amount of approximately 8˚ and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round, and (3) the distance between the teaser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shelter by about 15 mm. In this paper, a new method to detect nonlinear propagation characteristics of the internal vibration in the tissue for the low frequency mechanical vibration by using bispectral analysis is proposed. In the method, low frequency vibration of f0( = 100Hz) is applied on the surface of the object, and the waveform of the internal vibration x (t) is measured from Doppler frequency modulation of silmultaneously transmitted probing ultrasonic waves.
