  • The objective of this study is to investigate effects of prebuckling on the buckling of laminated composite cylindrical shells. Axial compression and lateral pressure are considered for laminated composite cylindrical shells with the ratios of length to radius. The shell walls are made of a laminate with several symmetric ply orientations. The study was made using finite difference energy method, utilizing the nonlinear bifurcation branch with nonlinear prebuckling displacements. The results are compared to the buckling loads determined when membrane prebuckling displacements are considered. Review the influence of nonlinear prebuckling for the buckling loads, the difference between the actual and classical buckling loads are increased as the increments with the ratios of length to radius, for which is applied the axial compression, but almost same for the lateral pressure.

  • A finite element implementation of the modified compression field theory (MCFT) using a tangential formulation is presented in this work. Previous work reported on implementations of MCFT has concentrated mainly on secant formulations. This work describes details of the implementation of a modular algorithmic structure of a reinforced concrete constitutive model in nonlinear finite element schemes that use a Jacobian matrix in the solution of the nonlinear system of algebraic equations. The implementation was verified and validated using experimental and analytical data reported in the literature. The developed algorithm, which converges accurately and quickly, can be easily implemented in any finite element code.

  • Optical pulse compression in a high finesse nonlinear Fahry-Perot interferometer made hy a silicon is ohserved. The optical pulse compression and moclul, ltion in a such nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer is due to the refractive index change of the silicon hy absorbing the incicknt pulse and generating electron-hole pairs. The pulse is compressed to liS of width of the IIlcicient pulse. And the experimental results are consistent with the results of computer simulation.lation.

  • Strengthening slender reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a challenge. They are susceptible to overall buckling that induces bending moment and axial compression. This study presents the precise three-dimensional finite element modeling of slender RC columns strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites sheets with various patterns under concentric or eccentric compression. The slenderness ratio λ (height/width ratio) of the studied columns ranged from 15 to 35. First, to determine the optimal modeling procedure, nine alternative nonlinear finite element models were presented to simulate the experimental behavior of seven FRP-strengthened slender RC columns under eccentric compression. The models simulated concrete behavior under compression and tension, FRP laminate sheets with different fiber orientations, crack propagation, FRP-concrete interface, and eccentric compression. Then, the validated modeling procedure was applied to simulate 58 FRP-strengthened slender RC columns under compression with minor eccentricity to represent the inevitable geometric imperfections. The simulated columns showed two cross sections (square and rectangular), variable λ values (15, 22, and 35), and four strengthening patterns for FRP sheet layers (hoop H, longitudinal L, partial longitudinal Lw, and longitudinal coupled with hoop LH). For λ=15-22, pattern L showed the highest strengthening effectiveness, pattern Lw showed brittle failure, steel reinforcement bars exhibited compressive yielding, ties exhibited tensile yielding, and concrete failed under compression. For λ>22, pattern Lw outperformed pattern L in terms of the strengthening effectiveness relative to equivalent weight of FRP layers, steel reinforcement bars exhibited crossover tensile strain, and concrete failed under tension. Patterns H and LH (compared with pattern L) showed minor strengthening effectiveness.

  • Concrete is highly non-linear material which is originating from the transition zone in the form of micro-cracks, governs material response under various loadings. In this paper, the constitutive models published by many researchers have been used to generate novel stiffness parameters and constitutive curves for concrete. Following such linear material formulations, where the energy is conservative during the curvature, and a nonlinear contribution to the concrete has been made and investigated. In which, nonlinear concrete elastic modulus modeling has been developed that is capable-of representing concrete elasticity for grades ranging from 10 to 140 MPa. Thus, covering the grades range of concrete up to the ultra-high strength concrete, and replacing many concrete models that are valid for narrow ranges of concrete strength grades. This has been followed by the introduction of the nonlinear Hooke's law for the concrete material through the replacement of the Young constant modulus with the nonlinear modulus. In addition, the concept of concrete elasticity index (${\varphi}$) has been proposed and this factor has been introduced to account for the degradation of concrete stiffness in compression under increased loading as well as the multi-stages micro-cracking behavior of concrete under uniaxial compression. Finally, a sub-routine artificial neural network model has been developed to capture the concrete behavior that has been introduced to facilitate the prediction of concrete properties under increased loading.

  • This paper presents quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) characteristic of a passive isolator using flexures under compression force. The passive isolator consists of a positive stiffness element (a vertical coil spring) and a negative stiffness element (flexures under compression force), and their proper combination of the positive and negative stiffness elements can produce both substantial static and zero dynamic stiffness, so called QZS. Firstly, a nonlinear dimensionless expression of a flexure under compression force is derived. A dynamic model of the passive isolator is developed and numerical simulations of its time and frequency response are performed. Then, undesirable nonlinear vibration is quantified using a period doubling bifurcation diagram and a Poincare's map of the isolator under forced excitation. Finally, experiments are performed to validate the QZS characteristic of the passive isolator.

  • This paper presents a modified arc-length method for the nonlinear finite element analysis of a structure which is loaded in incremental and fixed forces, simultaneously. The main idea of the method is to separate the displacement term by the constant force from that by the incremental force. Presented method is applied to the nonlinear analysis of isotropic shell structures separately loaded by lateral pressure or compression, and shows the excellent agreement with previous results. As an illustrative example of the applicability of the present algorithm, a parametric study is performed on the nonlinear buckling analysis of composite cylindrical panels under the combined load of the incremented compression and the constant lateral pressure.

  • This study conducts numerical analyses of a thin-walled composite cylinder under axial compression and internal pressure of 10 kPa. Numerical vibration correlation technique and nonlinear postbuckling analyses are conducted using the nonlinear finite element analysis program, ABAQUS. The single perturbation load approach and measured imperfection data are used to represent the geometric initial imperfection of thin-walled composite cylinder. The buckling knockdown factors are derived using present initial imperfection and analysis methods under axial compression without and with the internal pressure. Furthermore, the buckling knockdown factors are compared with the buckling test and computation time are calculated. In this study, derived buckling knockdown factors in present study have difference within 10% as compared with the buckling test. It is shown that nonlinear postbuckling analysis can derive relatively accurate buckling knockdown factor of present thin-walled cylinders, however, numerical vibration correlation technique derives reasonable buckling knockdown factors compared with buckling test. Therefore, this study shows that numerical vibration correlation technique can also be considered as an effective numerical method with 21~91% reduced computation time than nonlinear postbuckling analysis for the derivation of buckling knockdown factors of present composite cylinders.
