  • An extremum method is presented to predict the wrinkling characteristics of the inflated cone in bending. The wrinkling factor is firstly defined so as to obtain the wrinkling condition. The initial wrinkling location is then determined by searching the maximum of the wrinkling factor. The critical wrinkling load is finally obtained by determining the ratio of the wrinkling moment versus the initial wrinkling location. The extremum method is proposed based on the assumption of membrane material of beam wall, and it is extended to consider beam wall with thin-shell material in the end. The nondimensional analyses show that the initial wrinkling location is closely related to the taper ratio. When the taper ratio is higher than the critical value, the initial wrinkles will be initiated at a different location. The nondimensional critical wrinkling load nonlinearly increases as the taper ratio increases firstly, and then linearly increases after the critical taper ratio. The critical taper ratio reflects the highest load-carrying efficiency of the inflated cone in bending, and it can be regarded as a measure to optimize the geometry of the inflated cone. The comparative analysis shows fairly good agreement between analytical and numerical results. Over the whole range of the comparison, the mean differences are lower than 3%. This gives confidence to use extremum method for bending-wrinkling analysis of inflated conical cantilever beam.

  • Under unlubricated condition, the friction and wear tests of silicon nitride and zirconia manufactured by HIP were carried out at room temperature. The wear resistance of silicon nitride was superior to that of zirconia under low load, whereas the wear resistance of zirconia was superior to that of silicon nitride under high load. Wear model of ceramic was suggested by the microscopic SEM observation of worn surfaces and debris. Theoretical analysis and discussions based on linear fracture mechanics were made out about this ceramic wear model. From the theoretical analysis, a new nondimensional parameter, Scf, was introduced to estimate wear rate of ceramics. This new nondimentional parameter consists of contact pressure, surface defect of contact material, frictional coefficient and fracture toughness.

  • In this study, the effect of design factors in a pump station on the pressure variations which are the main cause of water hammering has been investigated by numerical simulations. As design factors, the flow rate, Young's modulus, diameter, thickness, roughness coefficient of pipeline are considered. The relationships between the pressure variations and the design factors are analyzed. The results show that the pressure variation increases sensitively with the flow rate and Young's modulus, and increases gradually with the thickness and roughness coefficient of pipe, whereas it decreases with the pipe diameter. The wavelength of the pressure wave becomes longer for a smaller Young's modulus, a smaller pipe thickness and a bigger pipe diameter. These relationships are nondimensionalized, and logarithmic curve-fitted functions are proposed by regression analysis. Most effective factors on the nondimensional pressure variation is Young's modulus. Flow rate, roughness coefficient, relative thickness and pipe diameters are the next impact factors.

  • In this study, the nondimensional load capacity of water hydrodynamic journal bearings is calculated. A generalized coordinate formulation is applied to handle the complexity of bearing geometry. A window-based analysis program is developed to analysis the cylindrical hydrostatic bearings. Load capacities are calculated according to some design parameters such as clearance, diameter of orifice, size of recesses and temperature. The results are presented and discussed.

  • The objective of the present work is to examine the cooling characteristics of water droplet on the unburned surface. The hot solid surface material used brass, carbon steel and copper at temperature ranging from 70 to $116^{\circ}$. the droplet size is from 2.4 mm to 3.0 mm. The CCD camera was used to record the evaporation histories of the droplets. and the evaporation time of the droplet on the hot solid surface could be determined by using frame-by-frame analysis of the video records. It is found that during the droplet evaporation process for copper the temperature remains nearly constant, whereas for carbon steel the temperature continuously decreases about $1^{\circ}$. During the droplet evaporation process on the hot solid surface, regardless of solid materials, nondimensional droplet volume decreases nondimensional evaporation time increases.

  • Heat exchanger tube array in a heat recovery steam generator is exposed to the hot exhaust gas flow and it could cause the flow induced vibration, which could damage the heat exchanger tube array. It is needed for the structural safe operation of the heat exchanger to establish the characteristics of flow induced vibration in the tube array. The researches for the flow induced vibration of typical heat exchangers have been conducted and the nondimensional PSD(Power Spectral Density) function with the Strouhal number, fD/U, had been derived by experimental method. The present study examined the results of the previous experimental researches for the nondimensional PSD characteristics by CFD analysis and the basis for the application of flow induced vibration to the heat recovery steam generator tube array would be prepared from the present CFD analysis. For the previous mentioned purpose, the present CFD analysis introduced a single circular cylinder and calculated with the unsteady laminar flow over the cylinder. The characteristics of vortex shedding and lift fluctuation over the cylinder was investigated. The derived nondimensional PSD was compared with the results of the previous experimental researches and the characteristics of lift PSD over a single circular cylinder was established from the present CFD study.

  • This paper deals with the energy dissipation of ductile metal plate due to cutting. By using nondimensional analysis, we present that the dissipation energy of tearing behaviour can be formulated as a function of slenderness ratio expressed by cutting length, yield stress, plate thickness and elastic modulus. The validity of the proposed formula for Al-alloy, copper and mild steel is demonstrated by comparing the proposed formula with experimental results, which are shown in good agreements except for thick mild steel plate.
