  • From the equation of motion of a "bare" non-uniform beam (without any concentrated elements), an eigenfunction in term of four unknown integration constants can be obtained. When the last eigenfunction is substituted into the three compatible equations, one force-equilibrium equation, one governing equation for each attaching point of the concentrated element, and the boundary equations for the two ends of the beam, a matrix equation of the form [B]{C} = {0} is obtained. The solution of |B| = 0 (where ${\mid}{\cdot}{\mid}$ denotes a determinant) will give the "exact" natural frequencies of the "constrained" beam (carrying any number of point masses or/and concentrated springs) and the substitution of each corresponding values of {C} into the associated eigenfunction for each attaching point will determine the corresponding mode shapes. Since the order of [B] is 4n + 4, where n is the total number of point masses and concentrated springs, the "explicit" mathematical expression for the existing approach becomes lengthily intractable if n > 2. The "numerical assembly method"(NAM) introduced in this paper aims at improving the last drawback of the existing approach. The "exact"solutions in this paper refer to the numerical results obtained from the "continuum" models for the classical analytical approaches rather than from the "discretized" ones for the conventional finite element methods.

  • This paper addresses the control of free and dynamic response of composite rotating pretwisted blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam fixed at the certain presetting and pretwisted angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. A distributed piezoelectric actuator pair is used to suppress the vibrations caused by external disturbances. The blade model incorporates non-uniform features such as transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectiriccally induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and the beneficial effects upon the closed loop eigenvibration and dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

  • This paper presents a finite element procedure for dynamic analysis of non-uniform Timoshenko beams made of axially Functionally Graded Material (FGM) under multiple moving point loads. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously in the longitudinal direction according to a predefined power law equation. A beam element, taking the effects of shear deformation and cross-sectional variation into account, is formulated by using exact polynomials derived from the governing differential equations of a uniform homogenous Timoshenko beam element. The dynamic responses of the beams are computed by using the implicit Newmark method. The numerical results show that the dynamic characteristics of the beams are greatly influenced by the number of moving point loads. The effects of the distance between the loads, material non-homogeneity, section profiles as well as aspect ratio on the dynamic responses of the beams are also investigated in detail and highlighted.

  • This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the nonlinear vibration of microbeams, with a particular emphasis on their application in sports monitoring systems. The research utilizes classical beam theory, modified couple stress theory, and von-Kármán nonlinear parameters to explore the behavior of microbeams. These microbeams are characterized by a non-uniform geometry, with materials that continuously change along the beam radius and a thickness that varies along the beam length. The main contribution lies in its exploration of the stability of smart sensors in sports structures, particularly those with non-uniform geometries. The research findings indicate that these non-uniform microbeams, when used in smart systems made of functionally graded temperature-dependent materials, can operate effectively in thermal environments. The smart system developed in this study demonstrates significant potential for use in sports applications, particularly in monitoring and gathering information. The insights gained from this research contribute to the understanding of the performance and optimization of microbeams in sports applications, particularly in the context of non-uniform geometries. This research, therefore, provides a foundation for the development of advanced, reliable, and efficient monitoring systems in sports applications.

  • The quadratic B-spline finite element method yields mass and stiffness matrices which are half the size of matrices obtained by the conventional finite element method. We solve the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam using the quadratic B-spline finite element method. Rayleigh beam theory includes the rotary inertia effects in addition to the Euler-Bernoulli theory assumptions and presents a good mathematical model for rotating beams. Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the weak form which yields a system of symmetric matrices. Results obtained for the natural frequencies at different rotating speeds show an accurate match with the published results. A comparison with Euler-Bernoulli beam is done to decipher the variations in higher modes of the Rayleigh beam due to the slenderness ratio. The results are obtained for different values of non-uniform parameter ($\bar{n}$).

  • This paper addresses the dynamic modeling and closed-loop eigenvibration analysis of composite rotating pretwisted fan blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam with bi-convex cross-section fixed at the certain presetting angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. • In this paper, we investigate the free vibration of axially loaded non-uniform Rayleigh cantilever beams. The Rayleigh beams account for the rotary inertia effect which is ignored in Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Using an inverse problem approach we show, that for certain polynomial variations of the mass per unit length and the flexural stiffness, there exists a fundamental closed form solution to the fourth order governing differential equation for Rayleigh beams. The derived property variation can serve as test functions for numerical methods. For the rotating beam case, the results have been compared with those derived using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory.

  • The paper presents free vibration and stability analyses of a non-uniform Timoshenko beam resting on a two-parameter elastic soil. The soil parameters can vary along the spat and is assumed to be two-parameter model including the effects of both transverse shear deformation and elastic foundation Governing equations related to the vibration and the stability of the beam are derived from Hamilton's principle, and the resulting eigen-value problems can be solved to give natural frequencies and critical force by finite element method. Numerical results for both vibration and stability of beams under an axial force are presented and compared with other available solutions. Finally, vibration frequencies, mode shapes and critical forces are investigated for various thickness ratios, shear foundation parameter, Winkler foundation parameter and boundary conditions of tapered Timoshenko beams.

  • A non-symmetric laser beam was used for cutting a thin glass substrate and its effect was investigated. In laser cutting of brittle materials, controlling crack initiation on the surface is crucial; however, it is difficult to ensure that crack propagation occurs according to a designed laser path. A lot of deviation in crack propagation, especially at the edge of the substrate, is usually observed. A non-symmetric laser beam generates a non-uniform energy distribution, which enhances directional crack propagation. A 20-W pulsed YAG laser was used for cutting a thin glass substrate. Parametric analysis was carried out and the crack control of the non-symmetric laser beam was improved. A theoretical model was presented and the limitations of the proposed process were also discussed.

  • In this paper, linear buckling analysis of a curved sandwich beam with a flexible core is investigated. Derivation of equations for face sheets is accomplished via the classical theory of curved beam, whereas for the flexible core, the elasticity equations in polar coordinates are implemented. Employing the von-Karman type geometrical non-linearity in strain-displacement relations, nonlinear governing equations are resulted. Linear pre-buckling analysis is performed neglecting the rotation effects in pre-buckling state. Stability equations are concluded based on the adjacent equilibrium criterion. Considering the movable simply supported type of boundary conditions, suitable trigonometric solutions are adopted which satisfy the assumed edge conditions. The critical uniform load of the beam is obtained as a closed-form expression. Numerical results cover the effects of various parameters on the critical buckling load of the curved beam. It is shown that, face thickness, core thickness, core module, fiber angle of faces, stacking sequence of faces and openin angle of the beam all affect greatly on the buckling pressure of the beam and its buckled shape.
