Discharge characteristics of non-point source pollutant and load amount of the discharge in the urban area were investigated in the Pungyeongjeong-stream basin and the Yongbong-stream basin in this present study. The land use of the studied basins were divided into paddy field, industrial complex area, combined sewage system, separate sewer system and point sources discharge. The descriptive statistics on the event mean concentrations (EMCs) of non-point pollutants by the the land use showed in the range of 4.43-32.28 mg/L for BOD and 8.27~56.17 mg/L for COD. The highest concentration was shown from the combined sewage system. The EMC of SS at the paddy field in the Pungyeongjeong-stream basin showed the highest range with the values ~ from 35.76 to 358.86 mg/L, which might have been influenced by a levee construction in the adjacent of the area. The relatively high concentration values of 4.43~32.28 mg/L and 1.617.13 mg/L emerged from TN and TP,respectively, at the discharge points of the both stream basins.
Non-point source pollution management is one of the most important issues in Korean water quality/watershed management. In recent years, Low Impact Development (LID) has emerged as an effective approach to control stormwater in an urban area. This study illustrates how to design and evaluate the effect of non-point pollutant management using EPA-SWMM LID module and suggests design parameters for modeling LID facilities. In addition, optimal installation locations of LID can be determined by a simple distributed hydrologic model by using SWMM for a long-term.
Impacts of non-point source pollution on water quality are well known. In this paper, effects of land use, precipitation characteristics, discharge characteristics on non-point source pollutant loadings at urban, agricultural and forestry watersheds were discussed. Rainfall runoffs from fifteen rainfall events were sampled and analysed at two urban watersheds, one rural watershed, and one forestry watershed. EMCs (Event Mean Concentration) were calculated based on monitored flow rates and concentrations. Statistical analysis carried out with runoff loadings and affecting variables indicated that runoff loadings are weakly correlated with the rainfall intensity and the dry days before rainfall events while showed no correlations with rainfall depth nor runoff quantity. By comparing EMCs between study watersheds on log-normal cumulative probability scale, EMCs ranking were in the descending order of urban watershed>agricultural watershed>forestry watershed for SS, TCOD, TN, and TP.

The unit load has simply been used to estimate total pollutant loading from non-point sources, however, it does not count on the variable pollutant loading according to land use characteristics and rainfall intensity. Since pollutant emission from the watershed is strongly dependent on the rainfall intensity, it is necessary to find out the relationship between pollutant loading and rainfall intensity. The objective of this study is to develop simple and easy method to compute non-point source pollution loads with consideration of rainfall intensity. Two non-point source removal facility at Gyeongan-dong (Gwangju-si) and Mohyeon-myeon (Yongin-si), Gyeonggi-do was selected to monitor total rainfall, rainfall intensity, runoff characteristics and water quality from June to November, 2010. Most of Event Mean Concentrations (EMC) of measured water quality data were higher in Gyeongan which has urban land use than in Mohyeon which has rural land use. For the case of TP (Total Phosphorus), Mohyeon has higher values by the influence of larger chemical uses such as fertilizer. The relationship between non-point source pollution load and rainfall intensity is perfectly well explained by cubic regression with 0.33~0.81 coefficients of determination($R^2$). It is expected that the pollution loading function based on the long-term monitoring would be very useful with good accuracy in computing non-point source pollution load, where a rainfall intensity is highly variable.
In order to evaluate the applicability of GWLF model which can efficiently estimate non-point and point source pollutant loadings in rural watershed including urban district, the model was applied to an experimental watershed. The model was calibrated using observed data such as daily runoffs, sediment yields, T-N, and T-P. Simulated daily runoffs and sediment yields by the model using calibrated parameters were in food agreement with the observed data. There were difference between the simulated and observed nutrient loading which was considered resonable. The simulated results by the model showed that T-N, T-P and sediment yields were dependent on the amount of stream runoff discharge and land use. GWLF model is believed to applicable to estimate amount of pollutant loading of non-point source pollution for the water qualify control of agricultural watersheds.
Studies of non-point pollutant treatment facilities have widely been conducted for a decade, but natural non-point pollutant treatment facilities implemented on roads have not been carried out for the removal efficiency of non-point pollution sources. This study analyzed the removal efficiency of non-point pollution sources from constructed wetlands using monitoring and event mean concentration method. As a result of this study, removal efficiency of general non-point pollution sources as TSS, COD, BOD is relatively good, but removal efficiency of TN, TP, Cr, Zn, Pb is very small or nothing.
This study evaluated the effect of water level of water resources on water quality in Ulsan. Two reservoirs, Sayeon Dam and Hoeya Dam, were selected and water quality of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were analyzed from 2012 to 2014. And the characteristics of precipitation were also analyzed for 70 years (1945~2014) because runoff of non-point pollutant was strongly affected by precipitation. As a result, water deterioration of Sayeon Dam and Hoeya Dam were affected in accordance with lowering water level. For example, the concentrations of COD and TN was negatively correlated with the water level when the water level of Sayeon Dam was gradually decreased in 2013. The TN concentration was increased to 1.432 mg/L from 0.875 mg/L while the lowest water level of Sayeon Dam was recorded 45 m in 2014. Additionally the concentration of COD and TN was sensitively increased with 0.213 mg/L/m and 0.058 mg/L/m on account of non-point pollutant runoff. It is indicated that hereafter a control of non-point pollutant runoff is the critical factors to maintain water resources because the contribution of non-point pollutant is expected to increase due to the frequent heavy rain events. Therefore, it is necessary to map out a specific plan for non-point pollutant control based on analyses of runoff characteristics, water pollution sources and reduction plans in water pollutants and to establish a water modelling and database system as a preventive action plan.
This study analyzes the correlations between non-point sources and runoff to estimate non-point sources for effective management. From the monitoring results, the correlation factors among pollutant mass loading, EMC, total runoff volume and average flow are calculated. And using correlation factors, the most related two constituents are determined. Also the most appropriate regression between two constituents are determined. Pollutant mass loading and total runoff volume has the highest correlation. Also, compound regression is found to be the most appropriate regression. This shows that pollutant mass loading increases as total runoff volume increases. It is not continuous increase but has some pattern.
This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the pollutant discharge from non-point source and to estimate the unit loads of the pollutant discharge from the upper watershed of Seomjin Dam during rainy season. The upper watershed of Seomjin Dam is located in the middle of Jeonbuk province is formed two tributaries mainly. A sub-branch stream of those tributaries is Imsil stream of which flow rate is about 13% of the main stream of Seomjin reservoir normally. On the basis of measurement result in this study, the water quality of Imsil stream was fluctuated highly and the quantity of measured pollutant discharge was higher than the value calculated with the proportion of flow rate during dry season. On the contrary, during rainy season the mean values of flow rate and water quality were higher than the quartile according to the statistical analysis. That means rainfall can influence strongly on the water quality of the upper watershed of Seomjin reservoir. Among the several criteria of water quality, SS discharge was most sensitive to the flow rate variation of stream, which was fluctuated in proportion of rainfall, basically. It was evaluated the event mean concentration (EMC) of non-point source pollutants depending on rainfall events as well. Though the pollutant discharge unit of Imsil stream was lower than the main stream of Seomjin reservoir, the EMC value of Imsil stream was higher than the main stream of Seomjin reservoir.
This paper considers the effect of rainfall on non-point source (NPS) pollutant loads. The impact of runoff on the occurrence of NPS pollutants was found to be influenced by rainfall amount, rainfall intensity, and the number of antecedent dry days (ADD), both independently and in combination. The close correlation ($R^2$ = 0.9920) between rainfall and runoff amounts was demonstrated at the study site (a flower farm) over the period between January 2011 and December 2013. The relationships among pollutant levels, runoff, and rainfall was not satisfactory results except for the Biochemical Oxygen Demand ($BOD_5$). The correlation coefficients between $BOD_5$, and both runoff and rainfall, were greater than 0.92. However, the relationships of other pollutants, such as Suspended Solid (SS), Chemical Oxygen Demand ($COD_{Mn}$), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP), with runoff and rainfall had correlation coefficients of less than 0.70. The roles of rainfall was different from rainfall categories on the occurrence of runoff. Instantaneous rainfall intensity was a principle factor on the occurrence of runoff following light rainfall events (total ${\leq}30mm$). For rainfall of intermediate intensity (total precipitation 31-50 mm), the combined effect of both average rainfall intensity and ADD was found to influence runoff generation. We conclude that the control of NPS pollutants with the reflection of the climate change that makes the remarkable effect of amounts and forms on the rainfall and runoff.
